Presenting The 1973 HI-LIFE Greenville Senior High School Marian Weber and Dana Selesky Co-Editors John Larsen Adviser An unidentified Greenville player is carrying the ball and being tackled. Rocky Briggs, 83, is looking on. Doug VanSyckle, 35, is going up for the rebound. The 1973 Hi-Life Staff has chosen to build this yearbook around the idea of pride. Pride is not necessarily found in a group, it is more often found in the individual. Pride is not only found in the school, it can be exhibited everywhere. In this yearbook, we would like to show the different areas. A Greenville Junior Varsity wrestler is riding out the period. Jim Laurent, 13, is getting ready to pass to another Our competition with Bclding for the Legion I rophy is a symbol of GHS J.V. player. Tri-captains are Jim Malone, Fran Barnwell and DaveTeman. 2 Sue Kropewnicki, J.V. cheerleader, is cheering during a home game. Pride is expressed in all the sports including cheerleading. It takes much practice and determination for all athletes in all sports. This year there were three new girl’s sports. These included: tennis, basketball and golf. They were fairly successful. GHS has also formed a freshman squad of cheerleaders; now there are three squads. Some of the conference accomplishments of this year were: varsity football team placed second, cross country second, golf first, basketball first and wrestling third. Sue Jorgensen, 12, is stretching for the jump ball. Trying to help are Connie Ostrom, 10, and Karen Moore, 40. Norma Nichols has served the tennis ball. Fred Muns is chipping with a seven iron. judy Grow, Varsity cheerleader, is practicing for competition and the upcoming basketball games. Lori Clementshaw, Freshman cheerleader, is cheering the “Eat ’em up” cheer. Wes Olsen, Steve Sims and Ron Thomas are fighting for the lead with a Sparta opponent. 3 Mark Christensen, ).V. Wrestling and Assistant J.V. Football 4 John Mellema, Tennis and Assistant Athletic Director Kent Ingles j.V. Basketball, Assistant Varsity Basketball, Assistant Track Tom Seaver Cross Country To go along with the Yearbook theme this year, we have decided not to dedicate the yearbook as such to any one person, but to a group of people who we feel show great pride in our school. These people show their enthusiasm and pride in everything they do. We have decided that the entire coaching staff really shows us what pride in one’s school is really all about These coaches are: Robert Gowans, Harold Deines, )ohn Mellema, Judith Hamilton, David Hannah, Bobbie LaValley, Gentry Mohr, Ken Reed, Larry Taylor, Mark Christensen, Scott Kraai, Virginia Johnson, Tom Seaver, Frank Stankey, Duane Chambers, Tom Schmedicke and Kent Ingles. Harold Deines Varsity Football Virginia Johnson Girl's Tennis How to you expect me to move my men when yours are in the way?” (Thad Taylor and Greg Merchun) Sue Forton, Roxanne Badersnider and Sandy Oberlin stir up spirit at a pep assembly. Pride is shown in student life. Students and faculty alike take pride in their various activities, both in the classroom and in their extra-curricular activities. Pride is demonstrated by a teacher who takes extra time to prepare special class activities and by the student who puts in extra hours to make his band, choir, athletic team or club the best. Come on, let’s get with it.” (Valorie Swartz, Mary Ann Vining. Cathy Rivett, Robin Perdue, Sue Nelson and Mary Lowry) The sophomore cheering section during a pep assembly. 6 Tom Whitten, Bob Mulholland and Rob Cornwell volunteer to answer a question. A Greenville athlete heads home after practice. Don Stuewer and Dennis Antonelli entertain the student body at a pep assembly. Connie Bullock, Carne Nielson, Kathy Warren and Kim Moore read through a play in acting class. Thad Taylor and Doug VanSyckle register for their final year at GHS. Chris Hansen absorbed in a Greenville basketball game. Mrs. Johnson glances toward Mr. Diehl for advice. A diligent member of the kitchen staff, Mrs. Nauta. Karen Wucrfel, Julie Liesveld, Jo Paulsen and Pat Augustine are in the middle of a chemistry experiement. Kelly Curtis taking time out from his studies in the library. The Big Buck winner of the 5th Annual Contest was Kevin Sailor, receiving honorable mention; Rod Fuller, third; Bob Baker, second and Wes Olsen, first. It was sponsored by the Future Farmers of America. 8 Dr. Stuart Anderson was a guest speaker for the “Three heads are better than one.” (Mike North, Steve Spry and Mr. advanced biology classes. He lectured about the Schmachtcnberger) eye. Sherry Hicks and Jean Johnson are anxiously awaiting class. Cooking a meal for 600 GHS students is Miss Christensen. f 9 Mr. Ingles perches on his desk to teach English. Mrs. Wheeler works during hectic lunch hour. Mr. Haight flashes a warm smile. 10 Jim Jensen, Fran Barnwell, Cheryl Hoffman, Harold Steele, Tom Hawes and Geoff Hansen light candles in a solemn candle lighting ceremony during the Christmas assembly. Rob Cornwell, Mike Fierens, Mike Perks and Doug Hamman show their school pride. The cheerleaders practiced all during basketball and football season to boost school pride. 11 Ann McLachlan is stuffing kleenex for the senior float. The seniors took first place in the float competition. Kevin Smith, Janet Wulf and Wayne Christensen arc backstage. The Freshman hall decorations receive fourth place. Beth Shotwell is visiting Jim Jensen during the play Tell Me That You Love Me, Junic Moon! The Senior hall decoration in the commons took first place. 12 Pride is shown in the activities that go on around us. Some of these were: the plays put on by Mr. Pawlowski’s class and homecoming. There was much work to do for Homecoming-building floats and decorating halls. Dressed up in costume is Elaine Kent in the middle, on the left is Becky Ziegenfuss and on the right is Cindy Welch. Betsy Caverly dressed up as a clown Thad Taylor and Tracy Scnko, Senior Representatives, and Steve Day and Alicia Lund, during Homecoming week activities. Sophomore Representatives during the half time festivities. 13 During Spanish III, Lori Hafer, Hanet Wulf and Mickey Reynolds are acting out a skit about a candy store. These Senior civics students are taking test. The prize-winning speech of the Voice of Democracy speech contest was written by Mike Dolick. Alicia Lund placed second and JoEllen Skytta third. There were 62 contestants. Mike went on to win the District contest. Linda Ballard, Brian Kissell, Debbie Weger and Don Stuewcr are cooking up a storm. Pride is shown in academic achievements. These include studying and the different activities in the various classes. Some of the classes had guest speakers come in and talk about their particular field. Many students and teachers went on field trips. 14 Connie Packard, Cosmetology Dean Scholten, Chick-N-Joy Coop students take pride in their work. It provides good experience and a means of making money. There are approximately 200 Juniors and Seniors in the coop program. The coop coordinators are Mr. Eldon Horton and Mr. James Humble. Dennis Antonelli, Penney’s Steve Hoisington, H. A. Curtis Sons Dave Linebaugh, Bob Ballard Body Shop Robert Vandcrlip, Hill’s Market 15 Therese Povolo, Dennis Dodd, Amy Kiste and Carol McComb get organized before the Christmas Concert. Sandy Muns and Curt Lincoln study their music in A Cappella Choir. Pride is shown in musical achievement. It takes a lot of devotion to sing something over and over until you get it right, or to practice your music until you can play every note. You have pride in your band when you show up on the football field for practice in freezing weather and when you come to those extra choir rehearsals when you have a million other things to do. And finally, there is the thrill of pride you feel when, after a performance, your director says Good job.” Jo Paulson sits first chair clarinet in the Tri-River Select Band. Bill Finkhouse and Louis Hamper pass the time in band waiting to play their drums. Gloria Bradley, Jackie Asiala, Marie Wise and Connie Speesc concentrate on their choir music. 16 In Memory Of Sydney L. Swanton The 1973 Hi-Life is in memory of Mr. Sydney L. Swanton, a former GHS teacher for 35 years who died in the fall of 1972. Mr. Swanton was born at Hardluck on July 12, 1905. He received an AB degree at Central Michigan University and an MA in math and physics from Western Michigan University. Before coming to Greenville, he was a coach, teacher and principal in the Lake City Public School System. In 1936, he moved to Greenville as a math and physics teacher. He also coached football, basketball and baseball. For most of his years at GHS, he was also senior class advisor. Besides being involved with the school, he was on the City Council for five years and was Mayor of Greenville. Mr. Swanton was a member and past-president of the Lions Club, and a past-president of Flat River Conservation Club. We feel that Mr. Swanton was a great teacher and man and a friend to all. He showed a great deal of pride in Greenville High School and in the Greenville area. We are proud to have known him. Mr. Swanton is taking a break during one of his frequent hunting trips. Sydney L. In fact, she was a number one singles on the varsity tennis team. Her other interests included letter-writing and photography. The Harold Steele and Kenneth Workman families were her hosts during her year-long stay as a Rotary Exchange Student Miranda Parkin Austria 1973 Exchange Students Petra Helbig West Germany One of our Youth for Understanding Exchange Students was Petra Helbig. As Petra stated, “I want to thank everybody in Greenville High School for their friendly helpfulness. This year brought me a new and pleasant experience in my life that I can use for my future.” Gymnastics was one of her favorite pastimes. The Alan Davis family was her host for the year. Martina Buss resided with the families of )ohn I. Rice and Norman Skytta during her eleven-month residency in Greenville as a Rotary Exchange Student. Martina said “I really enjoyed my stay in Greenville. I met so many friendly people and learned much about America, where I had the best milk shakes I’ve ever tasted.” Martina enjoyed all sports especially swimming and horseback riding. She also liked all animals—“including spiders and frogs.” Martina Buss West Germany Visit Greenville High Anaid Pantelic, “Anny,” played tennis during her visit as a Youth for Understanding Exchange Student. The first class, which graduated in 1873, consisted of eight students, while the class of 1973 has nearly 250 members. In spite of size, the members of both classes had goals instilled. These have changed with time, but they are goals nonetheless. School buildings and rooms have changed, but students then and now experience boredom as well as a desire to learn. Each class from 1873 to 1973 graduated and became part of the world. The final day brought sadness as well as joy as they entered the world as did the class of 1873. 81 0 Undergrads Junior Class Officers 84 Juniors-Class of 74 84 Sophomore Class Officers 93 Sophomores-Class of 75 93 Freshman Class Officers 103 Freshmen-Class of 76 103 Class of 74 Junior class officers are: Vice-President, Chip Steele; Treasurer, Sandy Obcrlin; Secretary, Kathy Barker; President, Joe Budge. 84 John Adams Sjana Akkerhuis Kathy Anderson Ron Arend Pat Augustine Kathy Barker Linda Barker Jane Barnwell Frank Barry Richard Basney fT J £ 99 ' N Lori Blanding Vicky Blanding Vicky Bower Rosemary Boyce Emily Braden Joe Budge Teresa Burk Cathy Burns Tagg Butler |im Cameron Chris Cogswell Tom Collins Don Cooper Deb Coppa Garry Cornwell Russ Brimmer Janet Bristle Mike Brown Pat Brown Bob Buck Lynne Christensen Maureen Christensen Carol Christenson Vicki Ciganik Terry Clark Greg Coville Bob Croad Richard Croad Jan Crosby Sandy Davis Tom Dietz Mae Dines Ray Dines Dean Dodd Roy Doolittle Bob Foote Sue Forton Bonnie Foster Jeff Foster Kim Foster 4 Debbie Gender Madelyn Getts Richard Giddings Audrey Gillis Richard Gotwalt Candy Deal Debbie Devereaux KayAnn DeVries Bruce DeWitt Tony Dickenson V r Ron Dunn Don Durham Gary Engle Bill Faber Julie Ficrcns Debbie Gallagher Tom Gamble Jim Gardner Pat Gardner Dale Gender Rick Gotwalt Archie Gray Bill Gray Louie Gray Enola Green Becky High Bill Hodgson julie Hoeflinger Cheryl Hoffman Steve Hoisington Paul Holbrook Sue Holmden Bruce Hopkins janet Horrocks Penny Houck Roxanne Humphrey Ellen Ingersoll jo Ingersoll Roxanne Ingersoll Cindy Irish Dave Irish Peggy Irish Jim Jensen Becky Johnson Kevin Johnson Val Johnson Janet Jones Paul Jones Lori Jorgensen Sharol Kellicut Michele Kocher Karen Kosten Melinda Kurnat Curt Lacy Marian Laisure Dallas Larned Dale Larsen Robin Lawens Sang Lee Larry Lepley Diane Lewis Eric Lincoln Leslie Loughin Scott Luce Virginia Mabbs LouAnn Mach Jamie McChristie Ken Madolc Bobbi Marsh Vicki Marsh 88 Marcia Miller Pam Miller Phil Molter Kim Moore Kim Morey Brady Nelson Chris Nelson Dave Nelson Hope Nelson Sue Nelson Brent Oberlin Sandy Oberlin Keith Olsen Mark Olsen Connie Ostrom Brenda Palcthorpe Terry Pallick Ace Patterson Bob Paulsen Robin Perdue 89 Jan Pitre Mark Pixley Robin Rarick Bev Reed Alicia Remus Diane Rieckman Julie Rieckman Diana Rittenger Cliff Ritter Eunice Roberts Jim Sanders Peggy Schooley Doug Schrader Joe Schrader Clarence Scofield Tim Peterman Dan Petersen Dennis Petersen Jackie Petersen Anna Phillips Jerry Reynolds Michey Reynolds Cinger Rich Tom Rich Darcey Riches Gary Rossctter Shelly Roy Rick Rummelt Sharon Russell Ira Sage 90 Jenny Smith Joel Smith Kevin Smith Tom Smith Debbie Snow k Jim Stearns Harold Steele Kathy Stewart Terry Stewart Nancy Stuhldreher Lois Townsend Cole Trudgcn Mike Truesdell Rhonda Tyler Susette Valance Jim Scofield Bob Sharrick Jack Simmons Steve Sims Cindy Smith Rocky Snow Jeff Snyder Faith Sommers Sue Soule Leon Space Jeannie Takens Rick Taylor Rhea Thomas Tracey Timiney Helen Tower 91 Eric Vance Bill Vanderlip Bob Vanderlip Michele Vanderlip Judy VanHarn Lindy Ward Dan Wenger Dick White Sue White Ron Wilbur Gail Wood Sue Wood Jean Woolworth Karen Wuerfel Janet Wulf Gary Yeomans Not Pictured: Tina Blumberg Rick Bradley Phyllis Crankshaw Tom Dietz Ken Haight Terri Hansen Bill Hemmes Doug Ingersoll Gail Jenner Wayne Kelpien Mike Kern Al Lemon Bob McAllister Mary McAllister Peggy Napieralski Lois Nauta Peter Nielsen Peggy Pappas Cindy Petersen Kay Powers Ron Russell Rusty Varney Al Vos Joe Vos Bruce Wager Bonnie Waldron Donna Wilcox Barrie Wilkes Madeline Williams Debbie Wilson Lynda Wilson Dean Scholten Dave Smith John Smith Kevin Smith Steve Smith Doug Sorensen Bob Surdam 92 Class of 75 Sophomore class officers are: Vice-President, Doug Merritt; Secretary, julie Hamper; President, Steve Day. Masterpiece is an art appreciation game played by Art Club members at their social hours. Art Club's main objective is to increase art appreciation among those interested in different forms of art. This is achieved through many different ways. One way is through learning about different artists and their style of painting or sculpture. Art expresses emotions and feeling of the artist and really shows his inner feelings. This year the Art Club decided to take a trip to Chicago and visit the National Gallery of Art. Art Club also makes silkscreen posters for different organizations and clubs. The advisor for this year was Mr. Tom Blinn. Creativity is a form of art. In the process of building a card house, creativity is used a great deal. Above is an example of how a card house starts and diminishes. 155 Movie, General Spanky, Was Attended By Large Group “What do you mean, it doesn’t work?” This year Girl’s League had many different projects and held many different events for the members to participate in. Putting together a newspaper is not an easy task. Ask any staff member who spent four to five hours some nights the week before deadlines were to be met. Always there were pages to be layed out, ads to be sold and stories to be written. Though it was a lot of hard work and long hours, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves while they worked. The main goals for the year were to produce a reputable news source for students and, according to Mr. Larsen, “to maintain the advisor’s sanity.” After a slow start at the beginning of the year, the paper got off the ground and the first printed issue was circulated after the second semester got underway. After the beginning of the second semester, some staff changes were made. Amy Kiste was promoted to editor-in-chief, Scott Crosby was added as a columnist and Lorie Moy as a reporter. Staff members for second semester were: Amy Kiste, Mark Wincgard, Denise Davis, Lorie Moy, Cheryl Hoffman, Mike Dolick, Dave Weber, Joyce Fluegge, Tanie Green, Scott Crosby and Jeff Wycoff. The Spotlight staff for 1973 included—Row 1: Joyce Fluegge, Business Manager, second semester; Amy Kiste, Editor-in-Chief, second semester. The staff tried to improve the quality of layout and pictures. They feel they have accomplished this in “Pride 73.” Some of the accomplishments that they achieved were: meeting deadlines, producing and selling of yearbook and increasing the size of the yearbook over last year’s yearbook. This year two editors were appointed instead of one and one assistant editor. They were Dana Selesky and Marian Weber. This year’s staff started out quite large, but as the year progressed, the size of the staff steadily decreased in size. 169 Let's Hear That Greenville Sound 170 The Concert Band performs at the Christmas Concert.
