DEDICATION Music, a universal language, expresses itself most profoundly in the American educational system. Perhaps, it is the only way to capture and re-express all of youth's exuberance, vitality, and emotion. Because music does this for youth, students learn to appreciate it at a higher level when they are older. They learn to find in music: relaxation, expression of deepest feelings, and a way of bringing people together. From no matter what viewpoint, casual “toe-tapper” to “trained ear”, you can see that music holds special significance in a high school. We would like to think that, at Greenville Senior High, music is of even greater importance than at most high schools. Our band “fires-up” the students at pep assemblies. Vocal and instrumental musicians combine energies to help the student body express their feelings at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Faster assemblies. Both departments of music give enriching and entertaining concerts during the school year. A small group from the band rallies the students at basketball games. The whole band plays at football games. A group from the vocal department performs services for the community in the name of the school. Contributions given by both departments to the school and to the community continue on and on. Some may say that our school does no more in the way of teaching music than any other high school. However, we feel we have two men with us who do more in the way of teaching music than any two men at another high school. We have Mr. Jerome Martin, head of instrumental music department, and Mr. David Gillett, head of vocal music department. The other schools don’t! While most men in music choose to be teachers of music, performers, conductors, repairers of musical instruments, critics, composers and arrangers or managers of music, we are fortunate that Mr. Martin and Mr. Gillett chose to be all of these and to be with us. Through their extra effort, sacrifice, and determination, GHS is able to boast one of the “powerhouses” of music in central Michigan. The Hi -Life staff, in the name of the school, wishes to give more than a casual thanks after a performance — we wish to give formal, due thanks and respect to Mr. Martin and Mr. Gillett for their unselfish devotion to music and to Greenville Senior High School. May this book be an everlasting tribute to them.
