PRESENTING THE 1965 HI-LIFE GREENVILLE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL GREENVILLE, MICHIGAN FORWARD From the cover to the contents - down to the paper used for the pages-this 1965 yearbook is excitingly different from any previous Hi - Life. The numbers 1965 on the cover are done in genuine, antique-copper metal inlay. The color of the cover is deep and rich and is on a leather-grain material. This cover, incidentally, is guaranteed to be the only one of its kind in a five-hundred-mile-radius of Greenville. Even the paper is a new and crisp style. It allows accurate and realistic reproduction of pictures. Some of the best materials that industry has to offer have gone into this yearbook. You'll find the copy of the yearbook fresh and interestingly done. The pictures are bigger and bolder-resulting in less empty white-space. Many of the pictures and much of the copy is devoted to the theme and dedication - music. Each of the two departments of music has been featured on a double-page spread at key spots in the yearbook. Indeed, some of the best human efforts have gone into this yearbook. Perhaps, you will find the 1965 Hi-Life as memorable as the memorable events it depicts. DAVID GILLETT MR. JEROME MARTIN DEDICATION Music, a universal language, expresses itself most profoundly in the American educational system. Perhaps, it is the only way to capture and re-express all of youth's exuberance, vitality, and emotion. Because music does this for youth, students learn to appreciate it at a higher level when they are older. They learn to find in music: relaxation, expression of deepest feelings, and a way of bringing people together. From no matter what viewpoint, casual “toe-tapper” to “trained ear”, you can see that music holds special significance in a high school. We would like to think that, at Greenville Senior High, music is of even greater importance than at most high schools. Our band “fires-up” the students at pep assemblies. Vocal and instrumental musicians combine energies to help the student body express their feelings at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Faster assemblies. Both departments of music give enriching and entertaining concerts during the school year. A small group from the band rallies the students at basketball games. The whole band plays at football games. A group from the vocal department performs services for the community in the name of the school. Contributions given by both departments to the school and to the community continue on and on. Some may say that our school does no more in the way of teaching music than any other high school. However, we feel we have two men with us who do more in the way of teaching music than any two men at another high school. We have Mr. Jerome Martin, head of instrumental music department, and Mr. David Gillett, head of vocal music department. The other schools don’t! While most men in music choose to be teachers of music, performers, conductors, repairers of musical instruments, critics, composers and arrangers or managers of music, we are fortunate that Mr. Martin and Mr. Gillett chose to be all of these and to be with us. Through their extra effort, sacrifice, and determination, GHS is able to boast one of the “powerhouses” of music in central Michigan. The Hi -Life staff, in the name of the school, wishes to give more than a casual thanks after a performance — we wish to give formal, due thanks and respect to Mr. Martin and Mr. Gillett for their unselfish devotion to music and to Greenville Senior High School. May this book be an everlasting tribute to them. % (facet TO LIVE AS GENTLY AS I CAN; TO BE, NO MATTER WHERE, A MAN; TO TAKE WHAT COMES OF GOOD OR ILL AND CLING TO FAITH AND HONOR STILL; TO DO MY BEST, AND LET THAT STAND THE RECORD OF MY BRAIN AND HAND; AND THEN, SHOULD FAILURE COME TO ME, STILL WORK AND HOPE FOR VICTORY. TO LEAVE SOME SIMPLE MARK BEHIND TO KEEP MY HAVING LIVED IN MIND; IF ENMITY TO AUGHT I SHOW, TO BE AN HONEST, GENEROUS FOE, TO PLAY MY LITTLE PART, NOR WHINE THAT GREATER HONORS ARE NOT MINE. THIS, I BELIEVE, IS ALL I NEED FOR MY PHILOSOPHY AND CREED. — EDGAR A. GUEST BOARD OF EDUCATION William A. Smith, Treasurer Robert E. Rice, Trustee Archie M. Curtis, Trustee George Stuewer, Trustee Mr. Walter Lyon, who passed away during the school year, was a second-term trustee of the board. The school and its students deeply regret his loss. 8 GHS Gets New PRINCIPAL Becoming the new principal of a high school is a challenge, and only men of challenge dare take it. One man — Mr. James Ryan was “dared” to become the new principal of Greenville Senior High School. He took it! Since then, he has repeatedly shown himself to be one of the “men of challenge.” As an educator, a humanitarian, a principal, and a father, he has accepted the dare” and has passed it on to the Class of 1965 in this message to them: Upon your graduation you have accepted a great responsibility. You are equipped with only the most basic and fundamental tools for deriving the most out of life. The question you are obligated to ask yourself at this time is, Where do I go from here?” Kahlil Gibran expresses an interesting thought in THE PROPHET — “Your reason and your passion are the rudder and the sails of your seafaring sail. “If either your sails or your rudder be broken, you can but toss and drift, or else be held at a standstill in mid-seas. “For reason, ruling alone, is a force confining; and passion, unattended, is a flame that burns to its own destruction. “Therefore let your soul exalt your reason to the height of passion, that it may sing; “And let it direct your passion with reason, that your passion may live through its own daily resurrection, and like the phoenix rise above its own ashes. Your talents are a gift that demand recognition — use and develop them wisely. How much you will enjoy life’s many pleasures will be determined by how much living you decide to do. Be reasonable in your decisions and in your expectations. Mr. James Ryan 9 MR. ALLINDER Mr. A. F. Allinder has served the Greenville School System for many years as teacher, principal and superintendent. Recently, his responsibilities as superintendent were divided into Business and Finance, and Personnel and Curriculum. Half of the work load was given to Mr. Radunzel. It is to Mr. Allinder that we owe the efficiency of our school operation. Mr. Robert Radunzel holds the recently-created post of Director of Personnel and Curriculum. He has the responsibility of deciding what shall be taught throughout the system, and what teachers shall conduct the classes and school programs. Our thanks go to Mr. Radunzel for our teachers, and the range of subjects offered in the schools. MR. RADUNZEL COUNSELORS The Student Personnel Services Department is one of the most necessary and important parts of our school. The counselors. Miss Zimmerman, Mr. Oliver, and Mr. VanOss, provide the services that every student meets and those that any student may request. Most students meet the counselors through problems in planning which classes to take, in planning for education after high school, or in discussing ratings of standardized achievement, intelligence or vocational testing. The “Counselors’ Office” also provides a part-time job service, vocational information, college and scholarship information, personal and family counseling, ability grouping and scheduling services, and practical experience such as the Nurses’ Aide program. Each and every student needs and uses the services offered here and appreciates the time and effort spent on planning for his high school life and his life after graduation. Mr. Oliver Miss Zimmerman STAFF Mrs. Bigler Secretary Counselors’ Office Mrs. Burke Attendance Clerk Miss Motley Secretary Principal’s Office Mr. Neitzel Session Assistant Ski Team Coach Mrs. MacDuff, R.N. School Nurse Each of these persons provides valuable assistance to the student body, administration, and faculty. Their presence makes our school function more efficiently and pleasantly for all. 12 CUSTODIANS When you want a locker opened, or need more heat, or just plain need someone to talk to, the custodial staff fills the bill. Aside from this, they clean and sweep the halls and classrooms, keep the bathrooms shiny, and aid teachers in rigging up new apparatus for their projects. They are handymen and we’re lucky to have such cheerful, handy handymen. Mr. Olsen, Mr. Ebels, and Mr. Ruikka KITCHEN STAFF It takes a lot of help in the kitchen to prepare and serve meals for more than nine hundred students and faculty every day. Food preparation is under the care of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Uard and Mrs. Lucille Cory. This group serves from the stcarr. table, collects and punches lunch tickets and cleans the serving trays after lunch. It only takes about twenty-five minutes to feed the whole school. 13 FACULTY MR.ALLEN B.S. from Ferris State College University of Wyoming for 1 summer 4th year at GHS Teaches Chemistry Astronomy Club Advisor MR. CONCERT BAND 1965 WINNERS OF 1ST RATING IN STATE COMPETITION The Greenville senior High School Band, under the direction of Mr. Jerry Martin, is closing another school year of accomplishments but continuing an everlasting season of music. Our football games last fall were highlighted by the band's entertaining half-time performances, each preceded by many hours of rehearsal. The marching season led on to a fine Christmas concert followed by preparation for the annual District band competition. A first rating at the District made it possible for the band to compete in the State competition. The school year has ended, but the band's work goes on through summer parades and concerts. VARSITY FOOTBALL Coach Clark Coach Schnepp It was September 13, 1964, the day of our first varsity football game. Would this be the year that Greenville’s long “dry-spell on the gridiron”would come to an end Many Greenville students and Greenville football fans thought so. We had a larg well-conditioned, and experienced team. The coaching staff was a hard-working, almost tireless one. Everything pointed towards a winning season. That night we traveled, optimistically, to Lakeview. But we lost, and so went the season. Our final record was 2 - 7 — our ninth straight losing year. Even though the team looked much better in the second half of the season, more times than not, they faltered in the closing minutes of the game and ended up on the short side of the final score. There were many signs of encouragement this year, but Greenville’s football dilemma still persisted. Next year? 90 John Nelson defends against a St. Johns pass in Greenville’s 19 - 0 loss in the conference opener. Rick Williams goes around end for a good gain in our 27-7 loss to Lakewood. Greenville’s Tom Hansen, in the background. Mark Christensen is pulled down in our 19 13 loss to Ionia. Chuck Beach goes over for Greenville’s first score in our 18-6 victory over Charlotte. This was our first victory of the season. Bill Brown grabs a pass in a hard fought game against Hastings. Greenville dropped a first half lead and lost 14 - 13. 91 Greenville’s Chuck Bradley goes over f°r Jn ning touchdown in the closing seconds of our victory over Belding. After a 20 - 0 loss to a powerful Grand Ledge team, Greenville traveled to Alma. We played excellent ball during the first half and led 20-0 midway through third period. But, we faltered in the closing minutes and lost 21 - 20. The ball carrier here is Jeff Brown. GREENVILLE 0 LAKE VIEW 6 GREENVILLE 0 ST. This year's team was made up of only 22 boys and were out sized by most of their opponents. They played good hard football, however, and are sure to help next year's junior varsity. VARSITY BASKETBALL Who is the team to beat in the West Central Conference ? If this question was asked in November of 1964, the answer most often heard would have been, I'd say say Greenville. Thus, in relation to this pre-season prediction, the Yellow Jackets season was a little disappointing. We finished second in the conference . . . a distant second, three games out of first. Our record was 9 - 5 in league competition and 10-7 overall. The Jackets started off fast with four straight victories and suffered only one defeat before Christmas. But the second half of the season had few happy moments. Probably Greenville s finest hour this year was when the scrappin scrubs plus Balcom mopped up Ionia 76 - 46. Being in Class B again, Greenville was anxiously looking forward to the tournaments. But the end was abrupt as we lost our first game to a giant Coopersville team, 62 - 60. Jerry Fuller fights for two points at Charlotte. Greenville ran its league record to 3-0 with this 51-38 win. This picture tells the story. Greenville beat Hastings by one point on Fuller's basket with three seconds to go in overtime. 96 Dan Plank moves toward the basket against Ionia. Greenville won this game 64 -58. Dave Balcom scores two points against St. Johns. However, we lost our first game, 55-53, and dropped from first place. Greenville had trouble with big Grand Ledge's rebounding and lost a squeaker, 55-54. Dave Balcom goes up for a shot at Lakewood. Greenville played poorly and suffered its fourth defeat of the year, 72-55. Paul Dean of Alma goes high in the air for two points. This was one of our easier games, winning 70-57. Greenville's “starting reserves ' played one of the finest games of the season against Ionia, winning easily 76-46. After the stirring victory over Ionia, our performance against Charlotte proved very disappointing. The Jacket's lost 68 - 58 to the big Orioles, our fifth setback. 97 Dave Balcom goes up for two points in Greenville's 6n-( win over the Hastings Saxons. Jerry Fuller shoots against Grand Ledge. We blew another big lead but still won on Dan Plank's two pointer with eight seconds to go. Ed Shroyer trys to block a shot in Coopersville game. Greenville lost and thus was eliminated from tournament play. 98 Dave Balcom attempts to block shot by St. Johns Werbish. Greenville blew a big half time lead and lost 73-64. Jerry Fuller goes up for a shot in our final regnl‘lf season game against Alma. We won quite easily 59-47. Considering the fact that this was their first taste of interscholastic competition (while many schools have interscholastic sports in junior high, Greenville, until this year did not) the boys did quite well. Terry Nussdorfor was the leading scorer with 132 points. According to coach Seavers the leading prospects for next year are Nussdorfor, Paul Bidstrup, and the Vansyckles — Jerry and Jim. The wrestling team is continually improving under the fine leadership of Coach Mathews. This year's team captain was Al Williams. Here are a few individual records! (All dual match records are complete through the conference) Wood — 14-0 in dual matches, first in conference, first in the Regional, and won 23 in a row before losing; Schofield — 14-2, third in the conference, and first in the Regional; Jim Jokel — 12-4, second in the conference, and fourth in the Regional; Gleason — 9-2, first in the conference, and third in the Regional; Keith Keeler — 9-2; and Bruce Wasilewski — 10-4. This year’s team has eight returning lettermen including: Balcom (leading pitcher and hit .404, playing in all 17 games). Jerry Fuller (hit .347 in 16 games), and Tom Hansen (junior, hit .368 and played in all the games). The 1965 squad should also have a fine season. This is accomplished by the encouragement of sportsmanship, leadership, and high standards, but most of all a pride and respect for themselves, fellow members, and the letter they wear. Money raising activities such as; a gun raffle, car wash, dance, and assistance at home basketball games, enabled the construction of a track board and pennants for Alma and Lake-wood. The choir in any school has a deep meaning to the students, and this is especially true in G.H.S. The A Cap-pella choir represents a group which spends an hour a day, not including the many extra rehearsals, practicing and striving to attain perfection in all types of music. When a student thinks of what his high school choir means to him, he says that this choir represents some of the best voices in school. The choir reflects the kind of school he attends as does the basketball and football teams.
