Working as a legislative and judicial body, our Board carries on such duties as developing a budget, setting up payrolls, studying teachers' qualifications—in short, it makes decisions concerned with management and policy-making. To these indispensable persons, therefore, we wish to express our sincere gratitude. 17 THE ADMINISTRATION Outlining and enumerating the jobs which fall under the jurisdiction of our principal is a difficult task, for his is a job which cannot be written or explained in a sentence or two. His is an ever-changing score of duties which are often hectic and difficult. Yet, Mr. Dalman has carried them out in a manner befitting both him and us. Through his efforts, Greenville High has continued to grow as a fine educational institution. Howard Dalman, Principal As the Superintendent of Greenville schools, Mr. Allinder has served as the adviser and executive unit to our Board of Education for many years. To him belongs the responsibility of an efficient and effective administration. By working with the teachers, principals, and civic groups, he is able to make qualified recommendations for Board action. Our sincere appreciation goes to him for the work he has accomplished. What is it like to be a Senior? To some it may mean the last few months before they're free, before they can go out into the world and be on their own. To others it means another rewarding stepping stone - one which will be followed by higher education. But to all, it is a time of mixed emotions and once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. Who else but a Senior can realize the hectic and nerve-wracking experiences of filling out entrance applications? Who else enjoys the opportunity of trading senior pictures and name cards or of dreaming up money-making projects to help further the finances for Senior Skip Day? And yet, overshadowing all these things is a constant feeling that this will be the last time these activities will be enjoyed. These Seniors look back on the training, friendships and knowledge they have gained. They also look forward to a promising future as alumni of G.H.S. One of the best ways to enumerate or evaluate the habits and characteristics of a class is to observe the particular species in their natural habitat. Upon careful scrutiny, a few conclusions have been reached as to our present Junior class. They can be found supposedly absorbed in a civics book, holding mock” conventions, wearing their glistening new class rings, working on committees for the Jr.-Sr. Prom, trying to avoid three years of back-class dues, taking over positions of leadership in various clubs and organizations, or waiting for next September when they will become the new Seniors. Enrollment lists showed them to rank as the largest class in the school. Teachers found them fun-filled and happy-go-lucky - sometimes all to much so. Noon hours found them roaming the halls, relaxing on window ledges and engaging in numerous other activities which were supposed to be promoting friendship - i.e. gaining dates. Homework became secondary only to a few hundred odd extra-curricular activities. Although they either hate to admit it or didn’t recognize it, the Freshmen’s first few weeks in school were ones of hesitancy and adjusting to new sights, new sounds, new smells and new people. A noticeable change took place, however, as the Frosh became acquainted and felt at home with the social and educational aspects of high school life. Their influence has been felt in clubs, sports, and all-school activities. In fact, they usually outnumbered the upperclassmen in attendance. All too soon they’ll be Seniors, looking back to see how they weathered the storms since their Frosh days. The fundamentals of state and local governments are introduced through a program of “learn by doing” in which the young people actually hold office and govern their own “state. Experience gained is to motivate the participants to be better citizens of tomorrow, upholding and defending the privileges and responsibilities of our form of government. It is a story concerning a widow, Mrs. Gyurko-vics, and her efforts to marry off her seven daughters. The plot thickens when Mrs. Gyurkovics, realizing that her attempts to find suitors are in vain, permits a young “Cupid” to step in. While plotting and conniving to marry off each eligible daughter, this young Cupid” assumes many roles. As a jealous lover, a lonesome clown, and a fun-loving cousin, he confuses everyone, including the audience! After all but one of the eligible sisters have found a mate, “Cupid” shows his true identity. In his role as a handsome young Hungarian officer, he asks for the hand of the remaining Miss Gyurkovics. But inside ... it was just a confusing maze of halls during the first days. With your help, however, I soon found my classrooms, and now I feel like any other GHS student. Lockers, fire drills, complicated excuses, and changing classrooms don't surprise me anymore. I especially remember the football games, with the marching band and the cheerleaders. They were completely new to me, but a lot of fun. This year has been a wonderful experience in my life. I will always remember the Class of ’63 and the friends I have made, and I will cherish my beautiful class ring, which was a gift from the Student Council. I want to give my appreciation to my wonderful teachers and friends. Sincerely yours, Kirsti Maki 88 Ina Kock, Shirley Shenefield Kirsti Maki, Ina Kock Hallo, Schueler! The best way to start this letter is by going back to September, when I started being a student of GHS. Everything was confusing to me and I constantly failed to find the right classroom, in Germany we stay in one room and the teachers come to us. The football season was another thing that was new to me. Germans have to get along without this-the government says they are too dangerous. But don't think that this is all that I will remember. There are still the little things like Mr. Robinson’s daily tests with the familiar, People, get ready to write;” the race out of third hour to the cafeteria; the proms and plays; and the many other things that make the time pass much too fast. As I look back and remember all of the nice times we had together, I wish that all of you could live for one year in a completely different country and see all the things that I did. Now, all I can say is, Good-bye and good luck to all of you. I hope to see you again sometime!” Ina Kock Kathie Cummings, Fran Larsen Sophomore Servers: Bruce Wasilewski, Jay Barnwell, Bob Wood, Mark Christensen, Sally Svendsen, Sara Wilson, Kathy Lee, Jane Smith Barkers, clowns, a refreshment stand, an elephant, a merry-go-round, and balloons-the scene was set for an evening of fun and dancing at Carnival,'' this year's Junior-Senior Prom. The Greenville High School Concert Band, after a gruelling marching season, began practicing for their annual Christmas Concert and the many performances they would make throughout the year. Even after giving a well-praised Christmas Concert, no one suspected this year would be any different from the years gone by. It was not until late February that the eighty-odd musicians began to wonder, “Could this be the year? It had been seven years since Greenville's Concert Band had received a first rating at the Annual District Judging Festival, but the rating had long been anticipated. At this point, many of the fine musicians forgot for a moment that they were musicians and became vocalists. Cheering, singing, and yelling, with band director Jerry Martin on their shoulders, the G.H.S. Band members released the emotions they had been saving for months. VARSITY FOOTBALL With an all new coaching staff, the spirited Yellow Jackets started their 1962-63 season. Under the direction of head coach Tom Hazen, and his assistant, Bill Olendorf, the Jackets played host to Big Rapids for a non-conference game. However, the Cardinals out-played the Jackets to win 22-0. Traveling to Eton Rapids three weeks later and after two conference defeats, the Jackets won their first game of the season, scoring 31 points to the Greyhound’s 6. Although spirit was high for the homecoming game, the Jackets didn’t come through, losing to Ionia 20-7. For the final game of the season the Yellow Jackets traveled to Belding and trounced the Redskins 20-0, to win the Little Brown Jug. They also gained possession of the American Legion Trophy, Coach Tom Hazen for having beaten the Redskins in three consecutive games. GRAPPLE KS Never in the history of GHS has a team improved so rapidly as our hard driving wrestlers. In their 3 years in the league, the grapplers have become championship material. This year the grapplers tied for first place in Zeeland Tournament and finished fourth in the conference. In the regionals, Fran Larsen, Dick Skinner, Fred Terrel I and Bruce Wasilewski qualified for the State Championships. Larsen won second place in the 127 pound weight class and Wasilewski placed 2nd in the 95 pound weight class. This is truly a fine showing. BASEBALL With thirteen returning lettermen, lack of experience should not be a problem for Coach Matthews 1963 Baseball team. In fact the experienced ball players have hopes to take the 1963 Conference. The 1962 team finished strong with a 13-7 record. In conference play the Jackets won 5 and lost 2 to finish tied for second place. Leading batter for '62 was Tom Rop, who finished with a .387 batting average, hitting three home-runs and driving in twenty-six runs, liave Balcom had an earned run average of 1.50. Senior Baseball Players: Standing; Gordon Ward, Ken Vanderlip, Jirr. Atkins. Kneeling: Hartley Byers, Ron Ellsworth, Larry Alsgaard. 163 First row: Keith Keeler, Jim Yeomans, Tom Worden, Gary Marlin. Second row: Phil Leach, Ld Williams,Rick Antcliff, Ken Keeler, Coach Hazen. TRACK Missing the trophy by half a point, the 1962 Track team placed 4th in the Regionals and five men from the 1962 team, including Gil Rice and Ed Williams, went to the State tournaments. Of the seven tri-school meets, in which the Jackets participated, GHS placed in all but one. The year's team is composed of many ’62 letterwinners - Ed Williams, high jump; Gil Rice, shot put; Ken Keeler, mile run; Rick Antcliff, 880 run; Leon Marlin, mile relay; Tom Worden, 220 run; Jim Johnson, pole vault; Jim Yeomans, broad jump; Bob Dombos, half-mile run. These letterwinning track men will be aided by many minor letterwinners and frosh trackmen. The 1963 season saw the initiation of the new track, built by the Varsity Boosters, at Baldwin Heights. 164 RACKETEERS Fran Larsen J im Freeman With many returning lettermen, a good record can be predicted for Coach Snell's 1963 Racketeers. Pete Bernth, Fran Larsen, Jim Freeman and Tom Johnson, all major Letterwinners last year, will be on the courts with plans to better last year’s record and try for first place. The ’62 Racketeers lost only one game in the season to Hastings and finished 2nd in the conference, a hard record to beat! Pre-match instructions PUTT PUTT PUTT John Engleman The 1962 Golf team experienced one of the most sucessful years of any Golf team in the history of GHS. They won the Conference Championship, placed 2nd in the Regional, and came in 3rd in the state ... a “close to perfect record. With medalist Tom Martin and returning lettermen Stan Kemp, Wayne Rasmussen, Dave Tanner and Paul Goulet composing the '63 team, another successful year seems very probable. Helping the first-string team will be John Engleman, Jim Swartz, Dave Jensen, John Glerum. The 1963 Golf team will be coached by Coach Williams. Paul Goulet .
