IN MEMORY OF DALE C. LARSEN For his kindly attitude toward all, for his noble and cheerful outlook upon life, for his helpful fellowship with the unfortunate, for his willing endeavor to fulfill his every obligation, for the joy his companionship lent our high school days, and for the privilege of counting him as one of our classmates, the Class of 1961 respectfully commerates this yearbook. TABLE OF CONTENTS DEDICATION We, the 1961 Hi-Life staff, would like to dedicate the 1961 yearbook to our present school building. We, the class of '61, feel that we should dedicate this book in this manner being the forty-eighth and the last class to graduate from this building. The building holds many fond memories for us and, we are sure, the preceding graduating classes. STAFF Glenn House...... Editor in Chief Dove Dolman......Business Manager Barbara Fordyce (1) Ass. ALLINDER, Superintendent o( Schools Congratulations to you who have completed thirteen years of education. You hove completed that all important first step toward being prepared to take your places in society as qualified citizens. It is now important to take those necessary steps and gain additional education in a college or university, a technical or trade school, a school of commerce or as an apprentice. In this way only will you learn how to live and how to make a living. Both will be necessary for your success and the success of the community in which you live. My best wishes go with you. A. F. ALLINDER, Superintendent ADMINISTRATION TO THE SENIORS: To keep up with the times today requires a lot of speed and maneuverability. Some of the new developments in the scientific areas, particularly, are out of this world. These changes affect us all, but it is safe to say that youth are really involved. College and job opportunities are varying even from year to yeor. Doors are being closed to the unprepared. High school graduation is one important key to success, but in many cases this is no longer sufficient. Get all the education and training you will need so your chances for success will be assured. Students become veil acquainted with all types of music; Dixieland jazz, symphonic tone poems, and occasionally some cf the classics are played. Between September and mid-November the band presents pre-game and half-time shows at all the home football games and at least one away game. At the Friday pep assemblies the band helps promote school spirit, and at all the basketball games a pep band takes over. The band sent four soloists to the Solo and Ensemble Festival this February. Norma Swanson and Marvin Guilfoyle received second awards and Judy Rice (right) and Dave Schollert (right) received firsts. As a contrast, the band prepares for a Christmas concert, a spring “Dress up the Band” concert, and the District Music Festival in which it competes with other class ‘A’ bands. However, they didn’t exhibit consistent good play until the last games of the season. Unfortunately, in their highest scoring contest of the year, against Belding, the Jackets were outscored 71-93. An upset of Lakeview, then rated as the fifth class B team in the state, was within the reach of an inspired Greenville team, but it slipped from their grasp in a close (46-49) game. Ed Eriksen was voted by the ball club as the most valuable player of the year. Maurice Riehl was elected the most improved player, with Bob McMeeken a runner-up. Sportsmanship awards were presented to Earl Ray and to Wick McQueen as runner-up. The only bright spot in last year's squad was Joe Sharpe, who scored 103 points, in four different events. This year seven lettermen return. Gary Mulick and Lyle House return as sprinters, while Harold Shroll, Adrian Baumgardner, and Vern Petersen are returning as distance men. Bob McMeeken returns in the shot put, and Joe Sharpe is back to bolster the squad. Mr. Walz must find a few replacements to fill numerous vacancies, if this year’s team is to be a threat. Left to right, are milers Baumgardner, Sharpe, and Shroll. Sprinters Lyle House and Gary Mulick in starting position. Joe Sharpe, who scored more than 100 points lost year, is shown here with our new Track coach, Mr. Walz. Neitzel shows pitching form. McQueen fields a ground boll. Johnson displays the correct sliding form. BASEBALL - 1961 Kraus shows his batting stance. The 1960 baseball team finished second in the league, with five victories and two defeats. Their overall record was nine wins and five losses. This year’s squad has five returning lettermen. Bill Johnson returns at second base, Marv Nietzel at shortstop, Wick McQueen at third, Don Kraus in right field, and Dave Molesh returns as catcher. In order for our 1961 baseball team to be a contender Coach Mathews must find a couple of pitchers, plus three capable ballplayers to fill the positions vacated by last year’s graduates. 101 Kneeling from left: Fran Larsen, Bruce Schnepp, Bill Kay, and Chris Lyndrup. Standing from left: Coach Snell, Jim Babcock, Tom Johnson, and Pete Bernth. The tennis team will be hampered by the loss of Bruce Schnepp, who is ineligible because of age. Bruce won eighteen consecutive matches, and is probably the finest tennis players in the history of G. H. S. His presence will be greatly missed this year. Aside from Schnepp, returning let-termen are Pete Bernth, Bill Kay, Fran Larsen, Jim Babcock, Chris Lyndrup, and Tom Johnson. These boys gained valuable experience last year, and if they perform at their best our tennis team will certainly bea top contender in 1961. TENNIS - 1961 Bruce Schnepp sets himself for a backhand shot. Coach Snell shows Bernth how to hold the racket correctly. 102 Al Baker gets ready to tee-op his ball. Loose something, Jerry? Coach Dick Smith. GOLF-1961 Last year Coach Smith’s golf team won the conference championship, the regional championship, and finished sixth in the state finals. Only two men were lost through graduation. Returning lettermen are Jerry Nielsen, Al Baker, Tom Martin, and Dave Dalman. These four boys gained much experience last year, and should be even better this year. Ray Tower, Bill Crothers, Doug Houle, Stan Kemp, Stu Robertson, and Wayne Rasmussen also return this year. Although these boys didn’t letter in 1960, they will certainly help strengthen this year’s team. With all of these boys returning, it is probable that this year’s golf team will be a league-leader once again. Dave Dalman tees off. Tom Martin shows the correct follow through. Coach Smith and Al Baker show off Regional Golf Trophy, won by last year’s golf team. 103 WRESTLERS SHOW IMPROVEMENT KNEELING Left to Right: Fred Terrell, George Bester, John Ranney, Bob Dornbos, Bob Loper, Dick Czarnopis, Fran Larsen, and Jerry Skinner. This year’s wrestling team was a great deal improved. Our grapplers won a match, defeating Sparta, and many of their matches were much closer than they have been in the past. Our matmen are young, and have gained valuable experience. It is very apparent that next year’s squad will prove to be a tough opponent. Fran Larsen and Bob Loper prepare themselves for the conference match. 104 No, that's all right, I’ll endure the pain. They did NOT make that point.” Full-dress warm-up for the Belding game. . Yes!
