This was September. Everywhere the leaves of the third season were bringing
the growth of spring and summer to a dramatic end. These were the days when the
flames of autumn burned most brightly in a fleeting but memorable show. Even over
night new richness had been added to the colors around us as we walked once more
toward the school in the fall. The branches of the maples extended against the blue
autumn sky: foliage in which scarlet and gold and orange intermingled. The colorful
autumn stands for vigorous activity. Later in the season there would come snowy
skies, brown leaves, gray autumn. But now we wandered in the multicolored early
days of fall, the time of vigor and elation . . .
