Carol Loftus Writers..........................Judy Brown, Connie Metzger, Douglas Biackmer, Sharon Taylor, Sally Leonard Foreword If is with great pride that we, the class of '56, present our Hi-Life. Four of the best years of our lives are now terminated and this book is in a way a symbol of all the experiences we've shared through our high school days. Here are recorded the events which made for an exiciting year: the clubs which made each one of us a vital part in school activities, here also are the teachers who made our years worthwhile, and most important of all, the students. Many who look at this book will see merely the pictures of students but to us who know one another, these pictures are identifications of friendships that are never to be forgotten. Yes, this is our annual for the school year 1955-56. It will mark a different era for every class but for the seniors it is the culmination of our carefree days. Next year our paths will be separate and our lives will take new shapes formed by adult responsibilities. This is our link with the past in years to come. We hope it has a special meaning for everyone who reads it. We have chosen our school mascot, a yellowjacket, to introduce you to our book. He is representative of all the students and is significant of our school spirit and loyalty. Follow him on a guided tour and enjoy yourself with every page. But try and read between the lines. There you will find all the fun and memories that you will cherish forever. Bon voyage! Dedication It is with no little pride that we, the Seniors of nineteen fifty-six, dedicate our Hi Life to our parents. How can we adequately express our sentiments to you who have sacrificed so much for us? You have guided our very lives to this point, where now we sojourn into the world alone, and this is our way of letting you know we understand and we appreciate. So thanks, Mom, thanks Dad, you've done you're share, the rest is up to us. Board of Education from loll lo right — A. F. Allinder, W. Jaehnig, A. I. Johnson, E. G. Wyckofl, J. A. Weitzel, Mrs. A. H. Cook. As a member of the class of 1956, I would like to express our appreciation for the excellent supervision and thoughtful assistance given us by the Board of Education. Although we could get along without many of our organizations, this Board is essential. 4 Administration From loll to right — A. Allinder, Superintendent; H. Dalmon; G. Crowford. Secy, to Principal; J. Motley, Secy, to Principal. D. Cairns, Internal Accounts. ... We hope to do bigger and better things next year for the betterment of the school. This year our administration, ably led by Superintendent A. F. Allinder, can accept a vote of thanks from our students for a job well done. In our two offices the affairs of the school and even the whole city's school system are handled. Schedules are arranged, passes are given, and funds from our various clubs are safely locked in the school vault. Our secretaries perform great tasks in helping students' names and scholastic records in proper files and ready for instant use. Your thanks should go out to those that maintain the nerve center of your school. 5 FACULTY From left to right — M. Proctor, B.S.; C. Snell; E. Briggs, M.A.; T. Grosvenor, B.A.; R. Lilacs Lavender and White If today the vaults of time were opened unto me, I would count my minutes well and not be near so free. With all the time before me placed as I had been before, Nor throw away a minute held within my precious store. Why must time require time to show its own true worth? Why do people wish away the time they have on earth? We have wandered deeply down our great path of time, Stopping here or tripping there, without much rule or rhyme. We've'smiled at things along the way, we've stumbled on heartbreak, But we have wandered deeply down this path we all must take. We didn't have a fret or care but that was yesterday, And then we woke this morning to go a different way. We never can escape this path we’re forced to travel on We never can bring back passed time the second it is gone. The fastest moving thing on earth is the item Time It never stops, it can't be touched, it isn't yours or mine. And on this path there is a place where friends must part their ways, And here is where they realize the shortness of the days, They spent alone together for so quickly time has gone, But to the ever-ticking clock it’s just another dawn. The minutes flow through grasping hands like water through a sieve, And when you realize this truth, you’ll then begin to live A life that's very thrifty with every hour and day Oh yes, my friends, it's now high time” to live your life that way. Lift to right — J. Blumberg, D. Blockmer, L. Williams, C. Mount. Senior Class Officers We’re seniors now and we can look back on four of the best years of our lives. Since our freshman year, we've been striving toward that big day — Graduation! Now that it's on hand we're a little remorseful at leaving G.H.S. but we're even more eager to continue down the path of life. Our greatest year was under the able leadership of Doug Blackmer as president; Jerry Blumberg, vice-president; Carol Mount, secretary; Louie Williams, treasurer. We leave the underclassmen with the hope they enjoy their four years as much as we have ours. 12 DONNA ALLEN If there's nothing to lough at just giggle. Feldpausch 31 Class Prophecy Would you like to know what the class of 56 will be doing twenty years hence? Well then let me tell you what I saw at the Alumnae Dance in 1976. As I arrived at the high school, I barely escaped Tom Sydow, who now owns the fastest hot rod in the world, by squeezing between the '76 Lincoln, owned by Glenn Ziegenfuss and the orange '76 Ford of Roger Harrington's. Walking in the door, I bumped into Mary Sharpe and Larry Snow, who were celebrating their twentieth wedding anniversary. Their chauffeur, Ray Vande Panne, was driving away from the curb in their block-long Cadillac. After entering, I was startled to hear the charming music of Gary Waldo and his orchestra, consisting of Carol Mount and Donna Allen at twin pianos, Pete Sorensen and Joanne Feldpasch on the horns, with Linda Jones as vocalist. Standing by the door I heard Susan Brace, Republican nominee for President arguing with Larry Lewis, Democratic nominee. Rumors say it won't be much of a race because the two parties are going to merge. Linda O'Connor, co-ordinator for a Paris shoe concern is waltzing by with Wayne Ruxton, head chemist for Dupont. Barbara Nixon flashed by with her husband and almost collided with Gordon Anderson, a retired millionaire and Linda Cusick, his private secretary. I just passed Dr. Jim Frank and Kay Johnson. They seldom have time for social life since they built their new hospital where Phyllis Weber's twin cheerleaders were born. I've heard that Don Benedict, famous opera singer, hopes Joe O'Conner will finance a personal appearance tour for him with one of Joe's many millions. It's also been told me that there's quite a feud between Janet Town's dairy farm and Ross Barber's corn field. Janet's cows are putting Ross out of business and the lawyer, Fred Welch is having quite a time trying to reach a settlement. I see Nancy Eitelbuss flitting from couple to couple showing off her five carat diamond. I heard Marcia Schnepp, medical technician, telling the salesgirl, Arlene Landstra not to exert herself too much as she might have a heart attack. It's too bad that Phil Harris, our million dollar truck driver couldn't come tonight. He is baby sitting with Joyce Hamler's football team. Brad Sprague, our successful business man is financing Dale Hartway's air field in his back yard. I was happy to see Jack Hansing could leave his happy family to be here and also Roslynn Switzer left her drug store in the hands of her two little pharmacists for the night. Vonda Thompson sells exquisite stationery which is made by Terry Rood. As intermission time began, I stepped into the hall and there was Carol Granzo, who just graduated from G.H.S. this year. I was safrry to hear from Carol that Lloyd Dickerson wasn’t well and had to retire on a comfortable income. He is under the tender care of his private nurse, Betty Griffin. Coach John Clark is taking his star pole-vaulter and ice skater, Louie Williams and Marilyn Batchelder, home early to keep them in condition for this year's Olympics. They are traveling to the games with Pat Whitten on the first leg of her trip around the world. Duane Myers offered to drive us around in his new jet-mobile. The first thing I saw was the new addition to Federal-Mogul, owned by Jim Bunce, and operated by his wife, Madelyn Wilson. As we drove on, we passed Ken Wheelock’s health bar. My how he'd grown! We watched Bob DuMond deliver his tasty bakery goods to Ken's. Inside the health bar was Wilbur Matthews, the hero of World War III. Seated next to him was Bonnie Williams, happily married and living in one of Shirley Wood's house trailers. Shirley and her husband. Bill DeBree, own the biggest trailer concession in the country. Coming down the street is Joe Bachar, retired oil tycoon from Texas. He tells us of the wedding of his neighbor, Don Losinger, a big rancher, and Carolyn Lavender. Lauralee Holmden flew in from California in Paul Hoffman's jet to be present at the wedding. We drove by the prosperous farm of Leslie Fields. He has gone into partnership with Eton Wittkopp and they are both living peacefully as bachelors. Back at the dance, I recognized Dave Bidstrup, a successful chemical engineer, and his wife, Carol Loftus, who designed his lab. Janet Wilson was busy explaining her children’s absences to truant officer, Terry Howell while photographer, Wallace Oswald took a picture of model, Pat Larsen. I heard Doris Tanner, the gourmet, laughing as comedienne Nora Van Hoose told jokes. Even Dove Sprague, the undertaker, was smiling. My feet were beginning to hurt and as I sat down to massage them. Dr. Ellis Taylor came over and advised a change of atmosphere so I decided to look around the school. It certainly was different from the old red brick building where I graduated! This ultra-modern G.H.S. was designed by Jim Kane and Dave Rusch and featured Super-Sonic-Sawman Escalators. Walking the corridor, I passed Margaret Carmer's physics lab right next to Joyce Hagadus's classroom and across the hall from June Kirkwood's husband's civics room. On the bottom floor I saw the first woman’s shop class with the name Connie Houck on the door. Connie lives in Margie Elliot and Sharon Linderman's Boarding House with Sally Leonard, who teaches gym at school. Esther Clayton and Laura Mitchell room here when they're home but they’ve been pretty busy as traveling missionaries. I noticed the oversized trophy case which has been filling rapidly since the Knapp boys, Gerald, Howard, and Roger took over the athletic department at G.H.S. My feet felt better now so I headed back for the dance. I passed Eleanor Rasmussen and Eloise Davis who were the pictures of happiness. It's obvious that living and loving is their true success. I heard them talking about the Percius Byrne Parade which is the fashion magazine of the day. Dave Marlin is the editor (giving a man's slant of style), and Agnes Cairns and Barb Cooper are chief reporters. The Parade features Judy Brown's column giving advice to the lovelorn. I ran into the two Jerry's, Blumberg and Thompson, who made a special trip from their cabin on North Lookout Point just to see their old buddies. Carol Demke looked stunning dancing with the movie king, Keith Minard and she told me her fabulous hairdo was designed by Deanna Jones. I heard a lot of noise from a group of women discussing the presidential election and I wasn't surprised to see some of the B.G.’s. They'd just come from a medical convention where Sharon Taylor just won the Nobel Prize for her cure of cancer. Connie Metzger, her loyal nurse, was holding her mouth open while DOS Jackie Ostrander probed around. Dick Wooten was polishing his diamond watch while Ruth Ann Nelson busily persuaded him to fly to Paris on the plane where she is chief stewardess. Karen McMeeken, a noted dance instructor, was showing socialite, Peggy Hodgkins, some new steps as I passed on my way to make a call. Barb Humphrey, chief telephone operator, gave me the C. and M. where Monique Boyden told me her restaurant was full and her head waitress, Betty Dennis, was cleaning up on tips. Since I couldnt' go there, I decided to watch everyone leaving the dance. I saw Douglas Blackmer, the Baptist preacher, walk to his home across the street and then a bright flash in the sky attracted my attention. It was a rocket ship reading, MARS OR BUST, captained by Charles Hart. Joan Barnes, Ron Benedict, and Ken Peterson were going along for the ride but I noticed Marco Pederson calculating the profits he was to make with his hot dog stand run by Dean Pappin and Tom Smith. Sheila Evans and Sharon Harding were also busy planning their beauty parlor on Mars which will feature electronic waves. All in all it was an enjoyable evening and I'm sure you're glad to note all your fellow-classmates are happy in having attained their ambitions. ' 'R M mheSi? S. Brace C. Metzger r. Sowman J. Town P. Junior Class Officers My classmates and I had an exciting time this year working together on the Junior-Senior Prom, graduation, and a dance that we sponsored as a money gathering project. Dave Reinke, president, and Jean Sorensen, vice-president, led us in these projects. Hubert Pessyl handled the money as treasurer, and Carl Blumberg kept the minutes at our meetings. The advice that our very capable advisers gave, helped us to do a good job in our activities. We feel that we have prepared ourselves sufficiently and are capable of doing a creditable job next year as seniors. We can hardly wait to get started on our big year. 36 Jeanette Addis Jay Allinder Lois Andersen Arietta Andersen Loretta Anderson Patsy Anderson Jim Badge Mary Badge Darlene Ball Floyd Barber Larry Barthell Pat Bauman Fred Beachler Jack Bersley Jim Bivins Carl Blumberg Lee Carlson Darrell Cavanaugh Jerry Clark Margo Colby Roger Copeland Jack Coston Nancy Dann Carl Deming Edward Dennis John Dixon Marshall Edwards Tom Elliott Linda Ensley Marilyn Feldpausch June Fessenden Kay Finkhouse Donna Flanagan Wally Fleser Pat Fox Judy Garman Helen Goodwin Dawn Grant Richard Hagadus Dan Hammond Janice Hansing Lorraine Hansen Dianne Hartway Violet Herron Bill Heyboer Carroll Horton Larry Hoxie Crystal Hummel Edward Ingersoll Faith Jaehnig Richard Jewell Karen Johnson Courtney Jones Cynthia Jurden Caroline Jury Helen Karns Larry Kent Ann Kilgren Mary Kay Kingsbury Yvonne Kline Alice Knapp Ron Krampe Louise Kunz Elaine Laidlaw Larry Leffel Ray Lillie Irene Linderman Marabeth Lyndrup Ken Main Carl Marlin Roger Martin Beverly McConnell Joan McKee Jim Morgan Phyllis Morlock lelah Mortensen Tony Mortensen Mary Mumaw Ed Neitzel Sharyl Nelson Jon Nord Gayle Northedge Maurice Noyes Gloria Olsen Jerry Pendrick Jackie Perry Sonney Perry Hubert Pessl Charlene Pickell Margaret Rasmussen Kay Raynor Dave Reinke Marcia Richardson Karen Rosendal Ann Rydahl 38 Jane Schallert Bob Senn Willy Shephard Jackie Siaoerley Peggy Skinner Jean Sorensen Lila Stinson Bill Swartz Lois Swartz Bill Swindell Harold Swindell Jerry Sydow Darwin Taft Duby Taylor John Tiffany Marlene Tyrell Anna VanVIerah Marilyn Varney Ron Vfaldorf Gary Walkington Roberta Wilkes Betty Williams Martha Wing Jack Wood Bob Zayler Jim Zull Dick Wiggins Facu y Ski All school ploy cast 39 SuapAivo-iA J. Our class was under the leadership ot Dick VanHoose as president; Joyce Morten-sen, vice-president; Bob Marvin, secretary, and Paul Sweetland, treasurer, who performed their duties very capably. After the Ionia basketball we sponsored a dance, which turned out to be very successful. It's been rather confusing at times, but we've had a lot of fun as “green freshman.” To start the year we were introduced at the Freshman Mixer. Following that we plunged into a busy year of sponsoring dances, supporting the cheering section at games, and generally getting into as many activities as possible. Our successful venture into high school couldn't have been possible without the leadership our class officers extended. Jean Fordyce was president; Marie Sheldon, vice-president; Micky Baird, secretary; and treasurer, Marcia Horrigan. Being on the council, I had a chance to serve on many committees for the activities sponsored by the council. I helped to sell activity tickets, decorate the field for Homecoming, put make-up on the actors for the All School Play, was a guide for Open House, served on the refreshment committee for the Christmas Dance, and helped make programs for the Honor Banquet. I also had the privilege of attending one of the numerous student council conventions. Throughout the year, we were led by our mayor, Jim Frank; chief-of-police, Tom Smith; secretary, Nora Van Hoose; treasurer, Sharon Taylor; publicity chairman, Carol Granzo; and social chairman, Carol Mount. Congratulations council, on a job well done. 54 Police Board Standing, left to right — J. Bochor, R. Switzer, P. Sewell, J. Clark, I. Carlson, Mr. Dolman, D. Reinke. Seated — J. Frank, T. Smith, H. Mumow. I was stronger than ever before this year in spirit and action because I was a member of the Police Board. I helped try and passed judgment on a number of cases. My capable leader was Tom Smith, our Chief-of-Police, and he was ably assisted by the court and Roslyn Switzer as clerk. Mr. Dalman, as advisor, helped us earn the name of one of the most efficient and smooth running student controlled courts in the state. Our decisions were not severe, but often entailed tedious jobs such as writing themes on the Low Down, student courtesy, or the advantages of a student controlled session. My thanks to this court for a successful year. 55 First row, loft to right — D. Hortwoy, F. Rosebrook, N. Knapp, C. Blumberg, B. Sweet, J. Clark, D. Horn-mond, K. Peter en, J. Kane, J. Clark, C. We, the varsity lettermen, among other numerable activities this year, handled the business at a local gas station, promoted a hayride, held club initiations, and enjoyed our annual senior trip, which proved to be very eventful. Our elective officers who saw us through the year were: president, Larry Lewis, vice-president, Lewis Williams; secretary, Gary Waldo; treasurer, Pete Sorenson; and our helpful adviser was Coach Smith. 56 First row—I. The G Club sponsors three activities and we may participate in any two. They have a night activity, during which we indulge in a variety of sports, bowling, and modern dancing. G Club sold ice cream at noon hour and sponsored the dance after the basketball game with Hastings. They also put on a modern dance program at Christmas and Easter. Being a senior, I had the privilege to take the senior trip which is the award a senior receives for having the required number of points. We were led during th year by our advisor, Miss Brown; president, Carol Loftus; vice-president, Joanne Feldpausch; secretary, Roslyn Switzer; treasurer, Ruth Ann Nelson; publicity chairman, Lynn Valentine, and student council representative, Margie O'Connor. 5 Hi-Life Staff First row, left to right — S. You have no doubt already noticed that the book has almost forty more pages than last year. The number of pictures is almost double. It has been a lot of hard work, but there were the enjoyable moments also. 58 Girls League Standing, left to right — Miss Motley, M. Thompsen, Miss Stall, J. Sorensen, J. Wilson, P. Morlock. Seated— L. Jones, E. Strieker, E. Clayton, J. Finkhouse, L. O'Connor, C. Houck. We, as an organization, consist of every girl in high school. Each girl begins as a freshman working for her award which usually is received in the senior year. In the fall we have the Freshman Mixer, followed by the Christmas program. We also put on a penny supper. In March we work on the tournaments and in the spring we have our annual style show. Throughout the year we present different assemblies and raise money in bake sales. We earn money to support our foster child in England. To end a busy year, we have the June Banquet honoring our graduating senior girls. Our officers this year were: Linda O’Connor, president; Phyllis Morlock, vice-president; Mary Ellen Thompson, secretary; and Linda Jones, treasurer. 59 P.A. Club First row — E. Redenor, N. Sampson, M. Skinner, W. Hay, D. Thomas, W. Scott, B. Swartz, A. DeGraw, P. Dolman, E. Miller, C. Hart, S. Krol. Second row — J. Fessenden, D. Sowman, B. Stroheide, Mr. Morford, A. Perry, J. Lincoln, L. Voss, B. Zaylor. i Nearly all major activities of G.H.S. are made better by a function of the Public Address Club. Our duties include the handling of sound equipment at football and basketball games, the lighting and records at dances. We provide the sound equipment at school assemblies and large meetings held by community organizations in the building. Perhaps the largest job of our advisor, Mr. Morford, and some of us, is the maintenance of this equipment and numerous amounts of electrical devices. Along with our advisor, we were led in these undertakings by Charles Hart, president; Paul Dalman, secretary; Eugene Miller, vice-president; Bob Zaylor, treasurer. 60 Projector Club First row—R. Nelson, J. Ostrander, T. Harding. Second row — K. Johnson, J. Badge, E. Miller, D. Stokes, S. Krol, J. Christensen, B. Zayler. Third row — Mr. Budge, L. Carlson, C. Hart, D. Rusch, E. Neitzel, E. Jury. In Projector Club this year I was taught the correct way to run a movie projector. After I had learned this, I had many opportunities to show movies for various classes and clubs. This experience was enjoyable and also worthwhile. Our faculty adviser, Mr. Budge, gave us many useful tips about handling the showing of movies. The boys elected by the club to lead us were: Dave Rusch, president; Ed Neitzel, vice-president; Charles Hart, treasurer; and Jim Badge, secretary. With these able officers, we had a very successful year. Latin Club Fourth row seated — S. Voss, C. Smith, S. Bond, Mrs. Stephens. First row standing — M. Stockton, C. Cummings, J. Kinkhouse, M. Boird, C. Kay, N. Nofzinger, S. Moore, E. Taylor, E. Kalnins, M. Jensen, C. Fleagle, L. Grannis, D. Byrnes, J. Peck, R. Olsen. Second row standing — C. Jones, J. Rasmussen, D. Anderson, D. Reinke. As a member of the Latin Club this year it gave me a good feeling to know that I was helping to support a needy child. The main purpose of the club is to increase the students’ appreciation of Latin, but the main project is to raise money for the support of a little French boy named JoJo. To do this, we had fudge sales at noon and we sponsored the dance after the Senior Play. We also sponsored a Roman Banquet in April and joined the Junior Classical League. Throughout the year we were led by our president, Margie O’Connor; vice-president, Mary Ellen Thomsen; secretary, Brenda Barnes; treasurer, Ruth Kazaks; and student council representative, Bob Marvin. We had a successful and happy year and I think we made JoJo a little happier too. 62 French Club Bottom row, left to right — M. Guinnup, T. Sowmon, C. Poppin, K. Johnson, D. Hurst. Second row, left to right— R. Nelson, J. Sommers, C. Hart, M. Bigler, S. Moson, Mrs. Stevens, M. Kruger, A. Reynolds, J. Wilson, D. Allen, J. Browne, V. Mercer, P. Anderson, C. Sutphen. Third row, left to right—S. Sydow, t. Mortin, B. Early, J. Barret, J. Zull, M. Switzer, S. Filkins, D. Raymor, J. Ruxton. This year I was privileged to be a member of Les Sentiers En France, more commonly called the French Club. The functions of the club are based on increasing student’s interests in French. Our club was capably led by Carolyn Pappin, our president; Tom Sawman, vice-president; Marcia Guinnup, secretary; Kay Johnson, treasurer; and Diane Hurst, student council representative. Mrs. Stephens was our advisor. The year proved to be a busy and prosperous one. Among the highlights were the dance we sponsored after the football game with Reed City, the support of a French orphan, JoJo, candy sales, and acquiring pen pals in Europe. All of this added up to an enjoyable year of French. 63 Library Club We, of the Library Club, are those students who are interested in keeping our library in order. We try to maintain this by working our free hours in the library, helping students find literary material, and by taking care of the books to make sure they are in their proper places. Leading our club is president, Sharon Linderman; vice-president, Deanna Jones; secretary-treasurer, Larry Holmden; and student council representative, Barbara Humphrey. Miss Hoag, the school librarian and our adviser, is a great help to us. Left to right, first row — Miss Hoag, B. Humphrey, I. Holmden, S. Linderman, P. Horr 9°n-Second row — J. James, F. Johnson, J. Hagadus, P. Copeland, M. Baker, J. Frank, Mr. Huber. Seeking spiritual fellowship during school, I joined the Bible Club this year. We met once a week and had interesting meetings with guest speakers and informal fun. Among our various activities, we included noon-hour movies and some assemblies. At the beginning of the year I was pleased to meet the officers of the year, who were: Jim Frank, president; Elwin Lillie, vice-president; Pat Giaque, secretary; Esther Clayton, treasurer, and Paul Sweetland, student council representative. These were the people who carried us through a successful year. 65 Future Homemakers of America First row left to right P. Thomas, S. Bennett, J. Korns, J. Gorman, M. Redman. Second row left to right B. Jones, L. Palmer, M. Palmer, Miss Stall, J. Addis, R. Taylor, R. Akey. Being a member of the Future Homemakers of America taught me a lot this year. For our annual project we chose Civil Defense. This was an interesting activity and educated us on what to do in an emergency. As future homemakers we feel this knowledge is essential. To lead us in this work we elected: president, Jeanette Addis; vice-president. Ruby Taylor; secretary, Janice Karns; treasurer, Valerie Adams. Miss Stall was our faculty adviser. Among our activities we sponsored a dance after the All-School Play and held a successful baked goods sale. 66 Future Farmers of America First row, left to right — C. Marlin, S. Fessenden, F. As a member of the Greenville Future Farmers of America I have taken part in many projects this year. Among the more important things have been the planting of trees, livestock judging, and entrance in the district tournament in parliamentary procedure contest. Our officers were sent to a leadership training camp at Higgins Lake, and also to the national convention at Kansas City. We were actively led by the following officers: president, Ross Barber; vice-president, Ronald Benedict; secretary, Jim Bunce; treasurer, Gayle Northedge; student council representative, Donald Benedict. This year our adviser has been Mr. Huber. 67 Safety Council Left to right, first row — L. Leffel, J. Bodge, P. Sorensen. Second row — Mr. Dolman, J. Finkhouse, M. Badge, S. loftus, L Valentine. Third row — J. Sydow, L. Lewis, D. Bidstrup. This year a new club was added to the many organizations already formed in our school. The Safety Council was born out of necessity as the parking problem behind the school and the traffic around it became too great to be handled by the administration alone. In our first year we were able to draft a suitable constitution and form some ideas about the problems confronting us. Our president, Pete Sorensen, attended luncheons at various intervals which were for the safety council of the city in order to obtain a better idea of his duties. A high point in our beginning was a luncheon attended jointly by officials from the city and our own members here at school. 68 Future Teachers of America Seated, left to right — N. Thorington, J. Blum-berg, M. Colby, A. Anderson, J. Sorensen, F. Jaehnig. As a member of the Future Teachers of America, I am beginning early on my road to becoming a teacher. It is my belief that future generations and their successes will depend on the quality of their teachers. It is with this in mind that I am determined to become an asset to society by being a capable teacher. Our club this year held a Christmas party for needy children, entertained the Belding, Ionia, and Sheridan F.T.A. Clubs at a tea and ended the year with a gay picnic in the spring. Phyllis Morlock, President, attended an MEA conference with our adviser, Miss Briggs, to obtain ideas to better our club. In our second year of existence, we, the members of the Choral Union, are proud of the record we have made already as an organization. This was a truly eventful year as we gave a fall concert, a Christmas concert with the modern dance group, an Easter program, a spring concert, and several assemblies for the student body. Something new was tried this year and we are pleased with the results. We called it a student recital and it gave us an opportunity to hear all the members sing solos. We got to know one another better at a get-acquainted party and throughout the year we sponsored several money-making projects. Our success was largely due to our efficient officers: Marlene Tyrell, president; Mary Anderson, vice-president; Janice Karns, secretary; Judy Gravelle, treasurer; Judy Davis, Marcia Redman, and Pat Bauman, librarians; Milly Kruger, student council representative; Judy Leffel, publicity chairman; and initiation chairman, Nancy Eitelbuss. This is just our beginning! 70 Future Nurses of America and Nurses Aid Front row, left to right — Mrs. Sellevaag, C. Metzger, K. Finkhouse, M. Wing, R. Nelson, I. Anderson, C. Gronzo, L. The object is to give girls interested in nursing a chance to find out what it is all about. The girls can then decide if they really want to choose nursing for a vocation. Mrs. L. S. Dunkin and Mrs. W. L. Bird, realizing the school's need for such a club, sponsored us. Now that the groundwork has been laid, our club will expand and be better than ever next year. Also in the above picture are the nurse's aides, uniformed. This is a semester course which includes class work and on the job training. This is really an especially exciting opportunity for nurse’s training candidates for it gives real insight in hospital work. Our advisors and instructors were: Mrs. M. Swartz, Mrs. D. Utess, Mrs. H. Sellavaag, Mrs. J. Rummelt, and Mrs. N. Lewis. 7! Firs' row — C. Cummings. L. Jones, B. Cooper, C. Demke, W. Shepherd, C. Hummel, M. Lyndrup, M. Badge, S. Filkins, N. Nofzinger, A. Rydahl, B. CHOIR I am proud to have been a member of the A Cappella Choir for four years and this, being my last year, was the most fun. Besides our traditional Christmas Messiah and Easter's Seven Last Words, we gave a successful performance of an operetta called The Creatures of Impulse. We have the cloak room as our major money-making project. With some of this money we bought two frames for the Art Department. We had several parties for our own pleasure and also sponsored one for the entire school. On behalf of the choir I would like to thank Mr. Oliver for his excellent leadership and close companionship during this year. A big reason for our successful year is our officers who are: president, Linda Jones; vice-president, Willy Shepherd; secretary, Connie Houck; treasurer, Don Ward; student council representative, Jim Badge; librarian. Crystal Hummel; initiation chairman, Jim Zull; and publicity chairman. Bob Marvin. r It Third row — R. Martin, J. Coston, D. Fessenden, M. Rasmussen. E. Taylor V Mercer, B. Burgess, J. Schallert, R. BAND I am a member of the Greenville High School Band. In the fall, we try to entertain you during the halftime of football games with varied performances. Throughout our sports season, we arouse the student’s pep by playing at the pep assemblies. This year we have started a pep band for the basketball season. Led by our president, Pete Sorensen, we fulfill our organizational obligation by putting on a pep assembly skit and sponsoring a dance. Roslynn Switzer, as secretary, keeps track of our business such as the district festival and ensemble, which we attend annually. We worked, of course, but watching our paper improve as the year went by made it all worth while. Our Jargon featured all the school news, from sports to society, and helped to bind the students together. We're proud of our paper and wish next year's staff the best of luck. Co-editors . . . All School Play The Student Council did it again, this time in the humorous situation comedy where parents are put through the trials and tribulations of a teen-age daughter. The daughter has been quite a wallflower but with the help of her older sister, she blossoms out to be the belle of her school. Romance and teen-age problems were solved and the play had a happy ending. Smarter and Smoother was produced and directed by Mr. Richard Kidd and the student director was Lorwyn Rutenber. This year I was privileged to be a member of a team that compiled one of the finest records in recent years. We started the year with three straight wins over Ithaca, Hastings, and Kelloggsville. Much of the credit for these wins goes to our defensive team which allowed only nineteen points. Following the Belding game, in which both teams were hindered by the mud on their field, we defeated Big Rapids and St. Johns. Our next two games, with Reed City and Ionia, were lost despite the team's spirited play. Fifteen seniors ended their high school careers in a blaze of glory by rallying in the second half to defeat North Muskegon. A great share of the credit for the team's six-three record goes to Coach Smith and his assistant. Coach Appledorn. We were led on the field by Co-Captains Jack Hansing and Gerald Knapp. At the end of the year we elected Roger Knapp, our outstanding ground-gainer, as our most valuable player. 84 o O o o nf FOOTBALL ACTION FOOTBALL Greenville 7-6 Ithaca 14- 13 Hastings 13-0 Kelloggsville 0-6 Belding 44-6 Big Rapids 15- 13 St. Johns 6-18 Reed City 6-19 Ionia 33-21 North Muskegon © BASEBALL © BASKETBALL Greenville 40-52 Lakeview 43-42 Ithaca 60-61 Lowell 43-39 Ionia 51-46 Stanton 65-64 Rockford 62-52 St. Johns 39-41 Hastings 45-41 Ionia 48-40 Belding 45-59 Hastings 48-80 Lakeview 55-43 Belding 58-43 St. Johns 64-41 Rockford TRACK 03 GOLF TENNIS 87 Varsity Basketball Lett to right — C. This year the Yellow Jackets completed a successful season, rolling up a record of ten wins and five losses. They came in second in conference standings, losing two hard-fought games to a good Hastings team. They defeated Belding twice, avenging an earlier defeat during football season. The Jackets improved steadily during the year and closed out the regular season with impressive wins over Belding, St. Johns, and Rockford. Jerry Blumberg, center, set a new record for a Greenville player in conference action with 150 points and broke the conference record for free throws with sixty. Jerry also set a G.H.S. single game record when he dropped in 38 points against Lowell in the District Tournament as we defeated them 72 to 60. Coach Henderson deserves credit for a fine job with the boys this year for leading them to their fine record. Blumberg, Larry Lewis, and Pete Sorensen are seniors graduating this year. We sported a fine J.V. team this year that extended its winning streak to twenty games before losing a hard-fought game to Rockford. All in all, the team ran up a record of twelve wins and three losses, including a 7-1 conference which gave them the conference championship. Forward John Rasmussen set a new J.V. single game record of 33 points in the second Rockford game, which they won easily. Ed Mulick also set a seasonal record with 169 points. Coach Finch did a great job for the second straight year, bringing them through the season with poise and self-confidence. Four of the boys were privileged to dress with the varsity for the tournaments. Greenville fans have a right to expect great things from the team in the future. 91 Baseball Team Golf Team Track Team Tennis Team 93 Dave Bidstrup escorts Queen Nora onto the field.
