QootAtepA Published By The Senior Class of Nineteen Fifty-Four Janet Belshaw Frances Snyder Sharon Bidstrup Allen Finkhouse Paul Drake Editor Assistant Editor Business Alanager Photographers GREENVILLE HIGH SCHOOL Compliments of The First State Bank foreword We, the Seniors of Nineteen Hundred and Fifty-Four, are about to step out of the doors of Greenville High School onto new thresholds of life. The four years behind us are filled with the footprints of youth growing up and trying to follow the footsteps of those who traveled before. The years in front of us lead down a strange new road. At this fork in the road of life we all have to decide in which direction we want our feet to travel. To you the underclassmen, we leave our fond and sincere wish that the years at this school left before you will be filled with happiness and that your four years of high school will help to pave the way for your future, as it has done for us. Lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime; And, departing, leave behind us Footprints in the sands of time.” Longfellow Compliments of Howard Hoffman 2)ed ication We, the Senior Class of 1954, wish to dedicate our Hi-Life to Mrs. Arthur Cook. She has been a very dear friend and a friendly advisor to us and classes in the past. She has served on the School Board, and as our most sought-after speaker. We dedicate our Hi-Life as a momento for all the help she has given us and all the hard work she has done. three cAtlm in ii tra tion Superintendent A. F. Allinder To the Seniors: Each year thousands of young people are graduated at high schools throughout our land. Young people just like you, Class of '54. There has been, believe it or not, a great investment in all of you in terms of parental time, love, interest, discipline, and general care . . . as well as money. You have an obligation to make this investment pay dividends to your parents and to your nation by becoming good citizens. No one owes you anything . . . you owe them. Have you the courage and strength to fulfill your obligation? My best best wishes for success go with you. A. F. Allinder To the Seniors: Someone asked this important question not long ago: What characteristics, competencies and traits should a high school senior have attained by the time he walks across the stage to receive his diploma? The answer to this question has been written about, talked about, and discussed from every angle, so much so that I shall not try to give the answer here. Each senior will be able to determine for himself, in time, whether we of Greenville High School have played a part in bringing out those traits which society believes good. When we consider the worth of every individual, the contribution he can make to the life of a community, we realize that our best efforts are necessary in fulfilling this obligation. Howard B. Fred Anderson, Tom Fisher, Greg Weitzel, Paul Drake t Nineteen fifty-four brought the turning point in the lives of ninety-six Seniors as they prepared to take the big step out into the world. In the fall they elected four capable officers. They were, president, Fred Anderson; vice-president, Tom Fisher; secretary, Paul Drake; and treasurer, Greg Weitzel. Student Council representatives were Phyllis Jorgenson and George King. Mr. Swanton, Mr. Christensen, and Mr. Robinson were the advisers. They worked hard on the dances they sponsored, especially the Junior and Senior Prom, and the Senior Dance. Other important events were the Senior play and the putting out of the Hi-Life. The steps taken in putting the final touches on a fine year were the Honor Banquet, Skip Day, Baccalaureate, and finally Commencement. To the graduates to come, we hope the footsteps you follow will lead you to success. Class Flower: Chrysanthemum. Class Colors: Blue and White. Kidd, F.loise Sots, George Johansen, Fred Anderson. Anne Cook. Sealed — Jim Powell, Janice Reinke, Norma Kienke, Marilyn Stokes, Ralph Marsh. Bruce Tenney, Gerald Nelson. The Seniors presented Rehearsal For Death by George Batson, mystery comedy in three acts. Eve Westman is producing a play when a murder interupts the rehearsal. The police swarm in and suspicion is everywhere. The murder of Carrie, who is about to reveal the identity of the murderer, brings events to a high point. The capture of the murderer and his escape down through the audience brings them closer to the action. The murderer commits suicide and everyone else is happy. The illness of Norma Kienke three days before the play caused some misgivings but Sharon Bidstrup stepped in and learned the part and gave an excellent performance on Friday night. Norma was back on Saturday night and she gave another excellent performance. Thanks go to Mr. Kidd, the director, and Eloise Soss, the student director, for the success of the play. The band also successfully raised over a thousand dollars by magazine subscriptions for the purchase of new uniforms which were received in January. That seemed to be the pattern for the 1953-54 basketball team at Greenville High School. After a highly successful beginning they fell to the champion St. Johns team in the final game of the season. Then in the district tournament at Ionia, they were beaten by a fine Lowell team in the district finals. However, it was one of the best basketball teams Greenville has had in the last few seasons. They concluded the season with a nine-won and seven-lost record. Although they will lose four seniors: Allen Finkhouse, Dan Metzgar, Tom Fisher, and Greg Weitzel, next season promises to bring an even bigger column of victories if they can continue their undying spirit and the tremendous will to win of this season.
