Soon the halls of G.H.S. began to resemble a combination book store, paper mill, and morgue. This was destined to continue for a period of two weeks. Mr. Brandt, though, soon recovered and both he and his students were well-rewarded with high ratings at the District and State contests. Many puns have been made in the direction of the student who forgets to study for a test. But Mrs. Smith took the prize for the year when she turned up red-faced one morning and said to her first hour Chemistry class, HI . . er . . . I forgot your tests. Needless to say she was quickly excused by her over- joyed students. All science students were required to have a project to enter in Science Fair. One brilliant student, a boy, decided to do an unusual project and determine the melting point of lipstick. However, Mrs. Smith stepped in and advised him to wait until he was a little older to try such experiments. Spring Fever hit us like a ten-ton weight and studies dropped to an all-time low. The seniors, for the first time, rode a train to Chicago. For many it was the first train ride and rapid adjust- ments had to be made. Eddie Stoneburner found it extremely difficult to eat his dinner because of the constant motion of the train. After several rather des- perate attempts to eat the peas rolling around his plate, he finally gave up and decided that they just weren't worth the effort. On arriving at Chicago, Ernie Lipple announced that he planned to conquer the subway system. ln- stead, he got lost, and was forced to seek the aid of a veteran. Everything was going fine until about 3:00 A.lX'l., when the desk clerk called to say that the people three Hoors down would appreciate it if they'd just go to bed. Somehow everyone survived the trip, although Ronnie Baker was disappointed be- cause he didn't get to jump off a skyscraper to see how it feels. Graduation came at last, and as the final bars of Pomp and Circumstancen were played, all couldn't help feeling just a wee bit tearful. As they thought back over the past year, they remembered the things they'd done together-the elections, the Spring For- mal, the class plays, the assemblies, and all the fun they'd had in classes. For the underclassmen, it marked the end of another school year. But, for the seniors, it meant the end of high school life. They realized that, although life would never again be quite as carefree as it had been during the past four years, high school had enriched their lives and helped to prepare them for the challenges of the future. They dropped many games by one or two points, losing only a few by a large margin. A mid-season shift to some of the younger players proved beneficial but still did not give the Comets the winning push. A pep rally near the end of February, however, fired the students' support and the team's spirit, and the Comets Hn- ished the season with a bang. Mr. Rogers, basketball eoaeh, was well-pleased with the progress of the boys. Tom Young averaged twenty points a game and was in competition for the Conference scoring title. 'lack Kallal, big senior for- ward, rebounded impressively and was an excellent defensive player. Other senior boys, Ernie Lipple, Don Iones, and Ed Stoneburner, were often called upon to back the team and came through with Hying Colors. VVorking the guard positions were Sonny Bimes and Larry Roland. Their plays and their shooting were responsible for many Comet points. Ed Brandt, a junior, saw much action and specialized in an out' side jump shot and good rebounding. Freshman Brad Parker showed skill and competitive spirit and played varsity ball the greater part of the time. Although it was an unlucky season, the boys gained experience and are proud of the fight they displayed even when the chips were down. The season officially opens with tip-off of inter-squad game.
