Finally the Flyers came to life and Won on the home court over Carlyle 44-42. The main trouhle was the teamvs inahility to win on the road. But the fans supported them well and they won their last 4 out of 5 games at home. Alter heing heaten decisively hy Roxana, the Flyers heat their old rivals, the Highland Bull- dogs, 65-56. It was a night when everyone was hitting from everywhere, including the free throw line. The team connected lor 29 charity tosses that night. Traveling to Litchfield the Flyers set up tight stall and were winning up to the third quarter. Then they lost the hall several times, and Litch- field pulled ahead. They had to change their style of hall, and lost the game 43-41. SPRING SPQRTS As spring roug around each year, three diffetirmt, hut equally interesting, sports talce the limelight at G.H.S.-golf, tennis, and traclc. Mr. Balcefs golf squad had two veterans haclc again from last year's team- Bill Hawkins, a Senior, and Jim Kallal, a Junior. This was the third consecutive year on the team lor both boys and they carried most of the load in the matches. Others rounding out the team were Steve Hoiles, Tom Pinlcstalif, Bolo Coolc, and Bob Rinlcer. After playing in several dual meets the boys were entered in the clistrict meet held at Belleville. The tennis squad had the strongest team ol' any ol' the spring sports. Mr. Wheat had all four letter-winners haclc from the '51 squad-Don lvlaroon, Lewis Britton, Wayne Wernle, and Paul Campbell, Seniors, and .lim Kallal, a Junior. Jesse Hopkins, also a Junior, who won four straight matches last season, helped to strengthen the squad. Gene Stever and Dale Mills also participated in tennis. The hoys had a rugged schedule again this year as they played against Belleville, Edwardsville, Roxana, Pana, and Collinsville. The district meet was held at Belleville. Coach Shea had about 25 boys out for traclc. The team was not as strong as it had been in past years because so many outstanding athletes graduated last spring. The few veterans haclc from last season included Leroy Loggins and Ron Bourgeois-shot put and discus, Stan Smith-low hurdles, Diclc Haas-440 yard dash, and Del Maroon-mile. Others out for traclc included Raymond Fox, Curtis Bohannon, Tommy McKean. .lim Young, Alvin Vvilderman, Johnny Joyce, Lowell Bone, Roland Hulbert, Jim Gieselce, Kent Merry, Bill Bryant, Carl Brown, Enloe Rench, and Teddy Davis. 4c51mm BOYS' INTRAMURALS For boys not playing on the varsity teams-there were intramural sports. The hoys played during the noon hour on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday of each weelc. Mr. lVlcCarthy was in charge of a very thorough intramural program which included loothall, softball. loaslcethall, and volleyball. Special medals were pre- sented to the winning teams in each of the sports. Also medals were given to the outstanding athlete in each sport. in the tall live softball teams were formed, the Freshman class having two teams. The Seniors soon proved that experience is the loest teachern as they won the championship easily with a perfect record ol' three wins and no losses. The Seniors had no trouhle at all winning the football championship. They ran up against trouhle in only one game-the tirst game ot the year against the sophomores. After a tierce struggle in which neither team scored the Seniors finally clicked on a pass play for a touchdown and then converted the extra point. The sophomores then caught one ot the Seniors hehind the line and scored a touchhaclc. Final score-Seniors 7, sophomores 2. After that the Seniors were more or less unchallenged and went on to win the championship with a record ol six wins, no losses, and no ties. The Juniors were second with a 3-2-I record, followed hy the sophomores and the Freshmen. in haslcetiaall there were two teams formed from each class. The Juniors had tall hard-driving hall cluhs and one ol? them was generally conceded to win. But, as playing progressed, it soon hecame evident that a Senior team would win. The second Senior team and the two Junior squads tied tor second place. Alter the regular schedule was completed, an All-Star team was chosen. The All-Stars were ahle to defeat the Champion Seniors twice in succession. in the spring the hoys played volleyball. Two teams were formed from each class. The two Senior teams and the two Junior teams formed the Senior league. The Freshman and Sophomore teams formed the Junior league. At the end of the season the winners in the respective leagues played each other lor the championship. 44 522 GIRLS'I TR MURALS Girts' intramurats tooti ptaee eyery Tuesftay anct Vtttlursctay, ttirougtiout ttle year, cturing ttie noon tlour.
