For the Inst lime the English Department requires a classical reading program with oral examinations. For the first time there is an I lonors program. Emphasis is being placed on critical as well as creative writing. Once again the English Department is realizing student capacity for sound scholarship. Ii is to Benjamin Wilson ' s achieve- ments in the English Department, his critical interest m the general college, and his realistic appraisal of sin Jem thought, productivity, and criticism that this bonk is dedicated. Page Sixty-fit STUDENT CO-ORDINATING BOARD The Student Co-ordinating Board serves in it?, particular function to integrate all phases of student activity— spiritual, recreational, social, student government and communica- tions. This organization is composed of the representatives from these areas of campus life, the three executive officers. and the Deans, who serve as advisors. Meeting weeklj to discuss current activities and prob- lems and working in these various areas provide the mem bers opportunity to gain training in leadership responsibility. HONOR BOARD The Honor Board seeks to establish an attitude of in- tegrity and responsibility on the campus. As a newly created organization, it has jurisdiction over violators of the Honor System. Students reported violating the Honor System are tried by the Honor Board which renders a decision on the case and administers a penalty to the violators. The Board is composed of seven members, one of which is the chairman, chosen from the student body at large. Two representatives are elected from both the Men ' s and Women ' s Student Government Associations. The presidents of both associations also are members of the Board. Seated: John IW. NATIONAL STUDENT ASSOCIATION The United States National Student Association is an organization of more than one million American students. Student governments at 400 colleges and universities are affiliated with N. S. A. The purpose of this organization is to discover and to represent the interests, problems, and aspirations of the American student. 1 he local N.S.A. Board, working as a subsidiary agent of The Co Board, sponsors such activities as the Friday Forums and special programs for Brotherhood Week and Academic Freedom Week. Serving as N. S. A. Coordinator is Ruth Burry. STATE STUDENT LEGISLATURE The State Student Legislature is composed ol students from North Carolina Colleges who are interested in govern- ment and politics. Once a year they meet at the Capitol in Raleigh and conduct their three daj session along the exact lines of the State Legislature. Student officials are elected, bills passed and resolutions made which air referred to the State Legislature. Awards arc given to the best bill in each house and also to the best man and woman debaters. ORIENTATION COUNSELORS Orientation counselors work with the new students by acquainting them with the cus- toms and regulations of the college. Each counselor attends a training session in the spring preceding the fall in which she will serve. The counselors contact their counselees during the summer and are on hand to help the new students move into the dormitories in the fall. Their main task is to prepare their counselees lor the handbook test given h the Women ' s Student Government at the beginning ol the semester. When needed, the counselors guide and advise their coun- selees throughout the year. The counselors are chosen from the Junior and Senior classes. As a national organization Alpha Psi Omega provides incentive for participation in college and university theatre, recognizing and re- warding all phases of student participation in college play production. The fraternity pub- lishes a national magazine, THE PLAYBILL, and provides other intercollegiate contacts. This year Greensboro College established its own chapter of Alpha Psi Omega to recog- nize the outstanding work of students in dra matics. To be eligible for membership in this national honorary fraternity a student must participate in several departments of dramatic production. The chairman of the Publications Board serves as a link between the campus publications and the Student Coordinating Board. It is also the responsibility of the Board to supervise elections concern- ing the four publications, keep records, set policies, and advise whenever necessar) on the operation of the publications. Pat Browning, began hei work lor the 1961 edition of the yearbook. The dummy was first, and was worked on during the summer. In the fall came pictures, copy, layout, and finally proofs. Among all this was the selection of a theme, a dedicatee and a cover, all to be kept a secret until the day in the spring that the Echo comes out. In all the students at G. I SOCIAL LIFE COMMITTEE Social life on any college campus is one of the most important areas of activity. On the G. C. campus the Social Life Committee is the guiding organization from which the various social activities extend. Representa- tives from each class, working with the Dean of Students, carry on their work throughout the year in the areas of dance plans, social functions, table assignments, and suggested entertainment in Greensboro.
