MEMORES, LIKE THE CORNERS OF OUR MINDS, MISTY WATERCOLOR MEMORIES, OF THE WAY WE WERE. SCATTERED PICTURES . . . Can it be that it was all so simple then Or has time rewritten every line If we had the chance to do it all again Tell me. would we, could we? Memories, may be beautiful and yet. What's too painful to remember We simply choose to forget. So it's the laughter We will remember Whenever we remember The way we were, the way we were . . . ct To whom shall we, the Class of 1983, dedicate our yearbook? This question is not as simple as it sounds; nor should it be. To better answer it, first let's define what dedication is. Dedication, according to Websters New Collegiate Dictionary, is de- fined as self sacrificing devotion. Some classes have no doubt in their collective mind who this quality may describe for them. In this class, how- ever, that was not the case at all. We all had our own ideas. So in- stead of settling for a compromise the Beachcomber staff decided to leave it up to each individual 1983 graduate who holds this book in his her hand. Indecision was not the sole reason why this alternative was formulated though, for there were a few other factors. As the years go by and one looks back on his her High School career, many different incidents, friends, coaches, teachers, and events come to mind. They are all worth cherishing and remembering; and to name just one fond memory or per- son is to lessen the importance, hu- mor, or impact of the next. Although the yearbook can't illus- trate all the memories each student may have, we hope it will aid in re- membering what many people de- scribe as some of the best years of your life. Maria Alvarez, known as Tinta by her friends, came to Greenport in the winter of 1982. She came from Bogota, Columbia leaving her family of four behind. Maria immediately fell in love with the United States, especially New York City and California. When asked what she liked best about the U.S. Maria replied, Football games and cottage cheese . The main reason Maria came to the United States was to learn English, experience independece, and become accustomed to the American way of life. All those who spent time with her can easily vouch that she mastered all three. Upon her return to Columbia in January, 1983, Maria began attending dental school. In the future she hopes to travel more extensively. And who knows? Maybe someday Maria's travels will bring her back to Greenport again. He played and he playedâall the way there! We skipped his class 6th period on April Fool's Day. When asked where we were, this was all we could say: Just collecting rock specimens, we wouldn't lie. Academic Suicide, was Chumley's reply. Yes, Earth Science was an experience that year. But we also had Mr. Claire to fear. Sound of Music found most of us in Nunberg Abbey. While Afro-Asian studies made us crabby. Selling candy left the treasury almost in shreds But visions of becoming sophomores danced in our heads. In the middle of finals there arose such a clatter Cy had blown up the toilet and boy did it shatter! Laurie, Julie, and Michelle led our sophomore class And the sale of jewelry helped our financial crash. Joann Soito had left and Jennifer came We were still underclassmen, but we tried just the same. That year we were introduced to Gildy and Dude, We had to take health, but we weren't in the mood. It was November and time for the Talent Show What was in store the audience just didn't know. The curtains opened and what should appear. But King Tut and six girls in togasâoh dear! We were all caught up with Fiddler On The Roof, It was a serious play but we still got to goof. At a basketball game four players started to drag We still wonder what was in that little brown bag I Those players just happen to be JoJo, Richard, Richie and Bobby, But it doesn't really matter cause they say they gave up that hobby. II ILii SLIDES More rapid than eaglesâno, not a bit slow. Two years had gone by, and two more to go. We lost Jeff Biggs, Julie Tuthill, Carolyn Cook and Mike True, But found Maria, Boni, and Jeanne added to our crew. With a helpful advisor so lively and quick, Mr. Lillis would help us through thin and through thick. He had four competent officers with one major aim And he whistled and shouted and called them by name: On Gaffga, On Tuthill, On Huber, and Davis Let's hope this prom will financially save us. Field Hockey and Basketball didn't need any tips All three Varsity teams won championships. The places to hang out were 67 steps and Split Rock, The car was ours 'till curfew hourâpromptly 9 o'clock! Floor hockey that year was the game that we played; Carnival would be a smash, (we hoped and we prayed). As opening night approached the tension grew. That year on the Ski Trip we Skied the Big Two. We all got excited as the prom came around Sue and Lisa were attendants and Karen was crowned. The summer was great, we didn't want it to stop. But we were now seniors and finally on top. We elected as officers in our last year of school: Jeanne, Sue, Chris, and Nora were the ones who would rule. We all said Good-bye to Noreen and Laurie, And welcomed Sigmund to our senior class story. The weeks flew by and each day we met With one more letter of the alphabet. At the homecoming game Karen R. was attendant and Andrea queen. While some of us decided to dress up for Halloween. Our eyes how they twinkled, our weekends how merry, Senioritis was a tradition we were happy to carry. The production that year was Annie Get Your Gun. Now the winter was over and spring had begun. We handed in term papers with one heavy sigh. And the theme for the prom was Just You and I. When put to a vote Florida won. We weren't going to Washington as others had done. We sprang to the bus; Mr. Pearce gave a whistle. And away we all flew like the down of a thistle. And they heard us exclaim as we drove out of sight: Happy memories to all and to all a good life. The club went to Mystic Seaport on Columbus Day and traveled to Delaware Water Gap dur- ing the Thanksgiving vacation to bike part of the Appalchean Trail and do a little basic mountain- eering. A winter survival training program took place on the weekend following mid-term ex- aminations. (Jan. 28-30). On this trip they went cross country skiing, camped on the snow, went ice fishing and ice skating, and enjoyed other winter activities at the Pocono Environmental Education Center. During the spring the club took a series of canoe trips geared to the age and ability of the student group, and went on the annual Weak Fishing Trip. SLITZ MARK SKI CLUB Ski Club Members Include: C. Although they didn't win the league title this year, they worked very hard to develop the experience needed to provide success In the future. All-League se- lections: Suzy, Andrea, and Heidi. The Junior Varsity, coached by Beth Ritter, had a productive year. Next year the entire field hockey pro- gram will be combined with Southold, as was this year's very successful Junior High Clippers, coached by Lynda Tyrer. Row 1: K. Atapetrix, J. Barszczewski, M. Volinski Greenport Southold Varsity Football team, after a suc- cessful 1981 season, experienced a rebuilding year. Gone from last year's team were 15 seniors who were replaced by five new sophomores. The team ended their season with a 3-5 record, despite several injuries, and position changes. According to Head Coach Dude Manwaring the re- cord is no indication of what the boys achieved. He summed up his final football season as head coach saying, âIt was a rewarding season; the boys improved; and next year with a new influx of S.H.S. students the team will be even stronger. This year's All League selections were; Tim Cooper, Joe Bush, Joe Davis, Tom Lillis, and Wayne Miller. J.H. FOOTBALL Undefeated Champions The Greenport Southold Junior High Football Team, under Head Coach Dennis Claire and Assistant Cliff Utz began its season with three victories in a row. The first was a 33-20 win over Southampton. The 21 eighth and ninth graders traveled to Babylon, where they won the game in the final three minutes. Against East Hampton, the Junior High Team rolled up a 32-20 victory. They also won their last three games, ending the season UNDEFEATED with a 6-0-0 record. When we asked Coach Claire why he thought the team was so successful he said, The team's success was brought about by discipline, dedication, and hard work. They're were no superstars, just 21 boys who could be coached. Junior High Football is another shining example of the benefits of consolidation. The Varsity team will surely be helped by these fine players in the years to come. Coach Claire and Coach Utz can boast a job well done! Standing: Mr. Utz, R. Martel, J. Pizzarrelli, K. Gadomski, R. Senior member Glen Franke, who began wrestling Varsity at the outset of consolidation, and John Kennedy, who is the first Varsity wrestler from Shelter Island, have compiled impressive records. Other team members are Steve Gralton, John Zaveski, Peter Kruk. Don Hunter, Robert Seavers, Phil Meyer, Rich Hubbard, John and Jeff Walden, Ricky Diaz, and Joe Gagen. The Junior High Wrestling Team finished a success- ful season with a record of eight wins and one loss. Two young men, Dave Sosnowski and Pat Gagen. were undefeated throughout the season. Eighteen Greenport students, eight Southolders, and three boys from Shelter Island finished the season. Spirit is high and the future is bright for Clipper Wrestling. 120 Row 1: T. Storm. F. The falling leaves are whispering The future's on its way. I close my eyes remembering The warmth of yesterday. It seems a shame to see my school years And their laughter start to fade. And more than that, it's oh so sad To say goodbye to friends I've made. And though a changing lifestyle I welcome and forsee If it were mine to make a change, I think I'd let it be.
