GREENPORT AND SOUTHOLD . . . Decling enrollment and progressively smaller turnouts for various programs have prompted the administrations of Greenport and Southold High Schools to work together on a program of partial consolidation. This partial consolidation would insure the survival of programs in danger of being cancelled, and offer students from both schools, sports and classes not currently available to them. Perhaps the programs most affected by the small turnouts and the declining enrollments have been the sports programs. During the 1979-80 sports season, Southold’s Wrestling Program had been cancelled due to lack of participation. Greenport’s program was having it’s problems too. As a result of the Section XI Suffolk County Athletic Councils meeting on Sep. 26, 1980, the wrestling programs of Greenport and Southold were consolidated for a 1 year experimental period. It was the first time two schools had consolidated a sport in New York State. Although the success realized from the consolidation of the wrestling teams was not phenomenal, it did offer Southold students an opportunity to wrestle again. It also served as a stepping stone for the consolidation of the other programs. As a result of further meetings in April and May of 1981, the following sports were officially consolidated for the future years starting 1981-82: football, golf, cross country, wrestling, track and girls tennis. More sports are expected to be consolidated in the future. Of course not all aspects of consolidation were pleasing. A new nickname had to be chosen for the consolidated teams, and new school colors had to be selected. Even though many new friendships were started, there is still the traditional rivalry between the two schools. The changes in traditions have affected mostly the high school age students, but so far everything has worked out. Sports have not been the only programs to be consolidated. An Advanced Placement English Course for which seniors receive college credits is offered at Southold. An Academic Social Studies course previously unavailable to Greenport students who attended B.O.C.E.S. is now offered at Southold. A Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps Program is offered at Southold. S.A.T. Preparation classes have been held at Greenport. Also, Financial Aid meetings have been held jointly at both schools. So far, cooperation in the consolidation efforts between both schools has been excellent. Aside from the necessary changes in name and colors for athletic teams, few aspects of consolidation so far have caused any problems. On the positive side, new friendships have begun and many others will develop as both schools further involve the student bodies in consolidated efforts. It would certainly appear that with so many positive factors, possible total consolidation is not far away.
