TABLE OF CONTENTS 6 SENIORS 56 UNDERCLASSMEN 68 FACULTY 84 ACTIVITIES 104 ATHLETICS 126 ADVERTISEMENTS GREENPORT AND SOUTHOLD . . . Decling enrollment and progressively smaller turnouts for various programs have prompted the administrations of Greenport and Southold High Schools to work together on a program of partial consolidation. This partial consolidation would insure the survival of programs in danger of being cancelled, and offer students from both schools, sports and classes not currently available to them. Perhaps the programs most affected by the small turnouts and the declining enrollments have been the sports programs. During the 1979-80 sports season, Southold’s Wrestling Program had been cancelled due to lack of participation. Greenport’s program was having it’s problems too. As a result of the Section XI Suffolk County Athletic Councils meeting on Sep. 26, 1980, the wrestling programs of Greenport and Southold were consolidated for a 1 year experimental period. It was the first time two schools had consolidated a sport in New York State. Although the success realized from the consolidation of the wrestling teams was not phenomenal, it did offer Southold students an opportunity to wrestle again. It also served as a stepping stone for the consolidation of the other programs. As a result of further meetings in April and May of 1981, the following sports were officially consolidated for the future years starting 1981-82: football, golf, cross country, wrestling, track and girls tennis. More sports are expected to be consolidated in the future. Of course not all aspects of consolidation were pleasing. A new nickname had to be chosen for the consolidated teams, and new school colors had to be selected. Even though many new friendships were started, there is still the traditional rivalry between the two schools. The changes in traditions have affected mostly the high school age students, but so far everything has worked out. Sports have not been the only programs to be consolidated. An Advanced Placement English Course for which seniors receive college credits is offered at Southold. An Academic Social Studies course previously unavailable to Greenport students who attended B.O.C.E.S. is now offered at Southold. A Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps Program is offered at Southold. S.A.T. Preparation classes have been held at Greenport. Also, Financial Aid meetings have been held jointly at both schools. So far, cooperation in the consolidation efforts between both schools has been excellent. Aside from the necessary changes in name and colors for athletic teams, few aspects of consolidation so far have caused any problems. On the positive side, new friendships have begun and many others will develop as both schools further involve the student bodies in consolidated efforts. It would certainly appear that with so many positive factors, possible total consolidation is not far away. First of all, we had Miss Dooley for English I with the spit-balls flying across the room, and the hole making in the walls, she would say, “it will be you getting a minus two.” When that didn’t succeed, we saw the coming of a new English teacher — Mr. Claire. With the rumor going around that he could bench press 4001bs. and that he taught at a reform school, no one dared step out of line. This year also saw our junior high football team go undefeated under the direction of C C (Crowley and Costantini). The class officers were Robby Walden, John Eckardt and Walter Cook. Jeanie was the freshman attendant at Homecoming. When March rolled around, Tammie and Joey starred together in Oklahoma, (both on and off the set). Our Sophomore year saw us gaining altitude in Gildy’s class. We were such birds and dizzy dames. Southern Fire got it’s start with Freddy at drums, Walter on bass guitar, and a couple of juniors making up the rest of the band. Teri Cook won Homecoming honors, and Tammie, Jeannie, and Cathy were our class officers. We were also introduced to that spectacular video presentation called: “Dude-a-vision.” With almost all sophomore’s on the starting squad, the J. V. boys’ basketball team was undefeated. In 11th grade we witnessed the beginning of the consolidation of Greenport and Southold with the joining of forces for the wrestling team. Everyone was so happy with their class rings that they started giving them away. The Football team was creamed due to a small turnout but, the baseball team made the county playoffs despite the “incident at Yankee Stadium.” Everyone took the SATS and ACTS and started thinking about post-graduation. Tammie, Rose, Ronald and Joey starred in Fiddler on the Roof. Some of the Southern Fire’s members teamed up with Mattituck and acquired the name of the North Fork Riot Band due to a concert they gave at Mattituck school where an anonymous member of the class threw firecrackers. The class hotrod, Vinny, managed to wreck his black machine with Barry in it. Robby, John T, Glenn, and Rose headed the class and set up the prom for which the theme was “We’ve Got Tonight.” Jeanie was the prom queen. Too bad it rained the day after. Our class saw James Stevenson leave but Don Wachtel became our newest member. Sue Jaworecki was the junior attendant for homecoming, and the class discovered Mitchells. 38 In our senior year, the consolidation with Southold continued in academics and athletics. Our football team moved to the Long Island Conference, and the varsity field hockey team finished first in League VIII. The boys’ varsity basketball squad went undefeated and the girls’ won the Class D Championship. The name for our consolidated teams, Clippers, caused quite a ruckus as did sixth period gym class. The play was“Carnival” and Tammie, Rose, Tommy, Ronald, and Robby were the stars of the show. Le Bar became the place to go. The class officers were Greg, Robby, Use, and Ronald. The Homecoming queen was Teri Cook and the other senior attendants were Rosie Carpenter and Eileen Giorgi. Members of our senior class of ’82 can add lots more of their own memories. Including the senior trip, the senior banquet and graduation.
