A Century Of Learning GREENPORT HIGH SCHOOL PRIMARY SCHOOL In 1729 rhe firsr school was established in Greenporr, then known os Srerling. Ir was orrended by boys only. The curriculum consisted of rhe three (Vs”, rhe most important of which was considered to be 'rirhmeric''. By 1805 rhe census hod risen to 31 pupils, six of whom were girls. The firsr school building built in Greenporr offer rhe adoption of its firsr name was located on rhe east side of Firsr Srreer. The village changed irs name so ir would ger a federal posr office. In 1831 rhe following resolution was passed. Resolved, rhor rhe village hereofrer be colled Green Porr. This villoge wos commenced in rhe Spring of 1828, and is now o place of considerare and increasing business. There ore now 15 dwelling houses completed and sever- ol orhers in progress, five srores, a warehouse, and numerous mechanic shops. They ore now firring our for Green Porr rwo whaling ships . . . and o number of smaller vessels employed in rhe fishing ond coosring rrode. They hove o whorf or which ships loy, or ore hauled our, ond rwo sers of ways for hauling up vessels The lond upon which rhe village is siruored ond in rhe neighborhood is of on excellent quoliry, rhe prospecr very fine, ond commanding; and in shorr. Green Porr is o very eligible, flourishing and beouriful place. When rhis passage wos wrirren Greenporr wos or rhe beginning of rhe whaling era The firsr ship, rhe Jane A Bishop , wos builr in 1836. Greenporr wos booming. Sreom boors began running rhor year. Soon rhere wos o fleer of 20 ships soiling from Greenporr. In July, 1844, rhe roilrood made irs firsr run for New York.
