Ir was orrended by boys only. The curriculum consisted of rhe three (Vs”, rhe most important of which was considered to be 'rirhmeric''. By 1805 rhe census hod risen to 31 pupils, six of whom were girls. The firsr school building built in Greenporr offer rhe adoption of its firsr name was located on rhe east side of Firsr Srreer. The village changed irs name so ir would ger a federal posr office. In 1831 rhe following resolution was passed. Resolved, rhor rhe village hereofrer be colled Green Porr. This villoge wos commenced in rhe Spring of 1828, and is now o place of considerare and increasing business. There ore now 15 dwelling houses completed and sever- ol orhers in progress, five srores, a warehouse, and numerous mechanic shops. They ore now firring our for Green Porr rwo whaling ships . . . and o number of smaller vessels employed in rhe fishing ond coosring rrode. They hove o whorf or which ships loy, or ore hauled our, ond rwo sers of ways for hauling up vessels The lond upon which rhe village is siruored ond in rhe neighborhood is of on excellent quoliry, rhe prospecr very fine, ond commanding; and in shorr. In 1842, Wolr Whitman roughr one unsuccessful rerm or Greenporr. While here, he published The Worchmon . Afterwords, he moved ro Sourhold ond roughr rhere. 2 On August 5,1861, o special meering was held ro discuss rhe formarion of a union free school. Only men were allowed ro vote On August 13, o final formation of o new district ond school was formed, with only 49 votes against it. In 1879, rhe Lillis property, owned by William Wickham, wos bought ond on Morch 4, 1879, plans for o new building were under way. The census numbered 335. In August rhe new building wos completed. Thor year on Academic De- portment wos formed ond Greenporr hod on entirely new curriculum. By 1889 rhe school hod progressed ro rhe point where o committee was developed by rhe board ro raise rhe ques- tion of placing rhe school under rhe Regents system. In 1890 this wos accomplished ond one student earned a Regenrs diploma By rhe turn of rhe century rhe school wos doing fine. In 1895 bathrooms were pur inside. By 1901 there were 611 stu- dents; rhe school building wos in good condition, bur rhe school wos just too small. In 1902 rhe Board of Education issued o report or its annual district meering. It read: The present building in both rhe high school deportment ond rhe grades is so overcrowded os ro menace rhe heolrh of pupils ond ro couse rhe Store Department of Public Instruction ro investigate rhe matter of school acco modorion in this district Accordingly rhe boord consulted Mr, Skidnos, architect, of Riverheod os ro rhe best merh od of providing rhe required oddirionol school facilities,- ond after carefully considering rhe matter in its various phases unanimously agree with him rhor os it wos ir would destroy rhe complete design of rhe present build ing, ond would nor meet rhe approval of rhe people after such attentions hod been mode. In 1910 rhe district received rhe following form from rhe Store Deportment of Education. The recent report ... on your union school shows rhor rhe school has been growing very rapidly of lore, porticu lorly in rhe elementary department. The instruction throughout mode a very favorable impression. The work of rhe school is evidently carefully ond intelligently super- vised ond directed. I note with interest that in oil grades speciol orrenrion is given ro rapid mental work in arithme- tic. All school records ore reported os kept in o business like manner ond were found readily available when colled for... Ir is pleasing ro note rhor rhe equipment of the school, both in grade ond high school, is so complere. Unlike rhe expansions of rhe previous school, rhe present school building wos nor built because of overcrowding, or lads of room, bur wos built ro alleviate rhe problem of recrearion. In rhe old school there wos no gymnasium. Whar little Physical Education there wos wos done outdoors or or rhe Opera House. Renting rhe Opera House proved ro be quire expensive. By Morch 1928 a petition wos presented ro rhe Boord. Ir read: We, rhe taxpayers . petition rhe Boord of Education ro take rhe proper steps ro provide o modern building ro be used os a gymnosium ond manual training deportment ond ro house o central hearing plant for rhe entire group of school buildings. The result of this petition- wos that rhe Board invited rhe Store Deportment of Education down ond on inspection wos mode. Ir wos suggested rhor o new school building be erected. The next question wos where ro build ir. On May 18, 1931 o speciol meering of rhe Boord of Educo rion wos held ro discuss rhe purchase of rhe Price estote. Ir wos approved ond shortly of ter, construction begon. In September 1933 rhe building wos opened Since 1933 new programs hove been instituted and rhe oppeoronce of our school has also changed. On our trip to New York Ory with Mr. Jonrzen, Durr got lost and was returned by a policeman. Brent Meyers left wirh his family for Syracuse and, Joe Dosile went to Mercy to learn new rules. Ve entered our sophomore year in September 1978. Our freshman year was good alright bur this one would be great. Jim, Durr, Doug and Corl were pur in charge of our 10th grade class. Ve thought, however, that somehow this foursome would nor lost. A flea marker was organized ro help increase our funds. The profit made was low because no one worked off their buns! It was rumored rhor Jim used class money ro fix his moped. Vhen word got our, rhe whole doss wonted his head. Token our of English doss, we all got checked for lice. Sure, it wos a joke ro us, bur Gildy didn't think it was nice. Another memory of Gildy’s doss-when singing a Gospel song. The doss wos on key mosr of rhe rime-MacDonald wos oil wrong. It was Mr. Veil's and Coach Jackson's last year. They moved down ro Florida bur said they'd miss it here. Oklahoma was rhe musical for rhe year. Ar rhe lost performance all rhe seniors shed their rears. 26 As we wolked through rhe doors ro our junior yeor in September 79, Our sophomore ond our freshmon yeors hod both been left behind.
