ROSE ADELIA BORGES Too early seen unknown, and known too late. Exchange Student from Brazil. 27 f r ct Class It seems like only a short time ago that the Class of ’73 filed through the hall- ways of G.H.S. as the new Freshman class. The first of many class meetings resulted in the election of Vincent Quatroche as president followed up by Diane Brockett as his understudy. Paul Mueller got the trusted job of the treasury, while Julie Macomber did our recording. Under the supervision of Mr. Burlin- game, a highly successful stationery sale was carried through to prepare us for our St. Patrick’s Dance. As our Sophomore year turned into reality, it seemed as though the girls would completely take over the executive positions. Diane Brockett was pro- moted to the presidency, while the newly arrived Anne Schmid was elected to the position of vice-president. Mary Riemer was chosen treasurer and Kathie O’Brien took over as secretary. Through countless meetings and persuasive talks with Mr. Connolly, we became the first class ever in G.H.S. to order our class rings during our Sophomore year. This was one of our greatest accomplish- ments since no other class as yet has been able to repeat this performance. We got through our Sophomore year with two successful dances, Christmas and Spring. With money in our treasury we advanced onward to our Junior year. Being experienced, we wasted no time in the election of our new class officers. Tom Hickey became the new president with Sabrina Foskey close behind him as the vice-president. Hauling in the money was Barbara Mazzaferro as Doreen Huzsek was kept busy taking down the minutes. In mid-October the halls of G.H.S. were filled with cries of, “Let me see your ring,” as we proud Juniors dis- played our new status symbols to the underclassmen. History With no time to waste, we hurried into a successful Halloween Dance and a few months later our Valentine Dance gave another boost to our treasury. With cramming for regents, decorating problems, the construction work, and driving Mr. Park crazy, “Fantasyland” finally became a reality. Even with a little rain, everyone seemed to have a great time. The evening was enhanced by the corona- tion of Joan Heaney as Queen of the Prom. Leading the Class of ’73 in our Senior year were Mary Riemer, president; Joan Heaney, vice-president; Mike Ficurilli, treasurer; and Doreen Huzsek busy as ever recording our meetings. They were kept quite active, for as our last summer drew to a close we were ushered into the auditorium to prepare for our magazine drive. With many Seniors hitting the road, we brought in approximately $8300, topping the Class of ’72 by a large amount. As college boards, applications, future preparations, and yearbook deadlines drew near, time just flew by. Soon we were on our way to Washington, for a trip to be remembered by all. Although we started our Senior year in utter confusion of half day sessions, pounding and banging, leaky ceilings, and no heating system, these hardships can be considered well worth the trouble. We, the Class of ’73, were given the honor of being the first to graduate from the newly reconstructed Greenport High School. Eckardt (sec.), J. Hart- man (vice pres.). Go placidly amid the noise haste, remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to oth- ers, even the dull ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare your- self with others, you may become vain fe bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however hum- ble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise cau- tion in your business affairs, for the world’s full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ide- als; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridi- ty disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the coun- sel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue loneliness. Beyond wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is un- folding as it should. Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you con- ceive Him to be, and whatever your labors aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace with your soul. With all its shame, drudg- ery, broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. Class of 1975 1st Row: H. Capon, P. Raynor, C. Dinizio, L. Giovanelli, D. Ruroede, M. After starting the season poorly by losing to Mercy, the Porters reeled off four straight wins before tying the eventual Division Champs, Babylon. After defeating Longwood, the Porters lost a heartbreaker to Easthampton, and were thoroughly outplayed by Amity ville in the playoffs. The offense, scoring 130 points during the season, was led by Junior quarter- back Kip Skrezec, who passed for over 650 yards. His main targets were John Corwin, All-League wingback Steve Damiani, and All-Suffolk end Bill Fuccillo. The backfield, running for over 1275 yards, consisted of Tom Hickey, Tom Yates, Steve Damiani, and Pete Pemberton. Holding their opponents to 101 points the Porter defense was led by linemen David Brandi, and All-League of- fensive tackle Bob Chute, linebackers Pete Pemberton (All-League) and Steve Damiani, and defensive backs Bill Wiggins (All-League) and Lucky Ward. Those who wore the purple and gold for the last time are Dave Brandi, Bob Chute, Steve Damiani, Tom Hickey, Pete Pemberton, Lucky Ward, Bill Wig- gins, and Tom Yates. A great deal of credit for this year’s Porter success goes to Coach Jackson and Assistant Coach Sam Kirko for their patience, effort, and dedication shown during the season. Varsity Basketball R. Mazzaferro (mgr.), J. Clark (mgr.), B. Blasko, D. Edwards, P. Kelly, R. Chute, M. Krzeminski, J. Geier, Coach Manwaring. Absent: J. Davis, W. Fuccillo, J. Corwin, G. Proferes. The 1972-73 season was a rebuilding one for the Porters. Despite tough league competition from Bridgehampton, Hampton Bays and others, the Porters managed to post a fair record. This year the graduating Seniors are Bob Chute (All-League) and Bruce Blasko. Bob’s rebounding ability and hustle on the court, along with Bruce’s aggressive defensive playing will be sadly missed next year. However, with Junior Mike Krzeminski directing the defensive attack and Bill Fuccillo clearing the boards, next year should be a good one for the Porters. Returning also are Jerry Davis, a fast moving guard, Pat Kelly with his great out- side shooting ability, and John Corwin to round out the offense. With Coaches Manwaring and Breese working these players hard next year, the Porters will be a team to be reckoned with in the 1973-74 season. All League Bob 68 Cross Country Kneeling: W. Tillinghast, N. Wetmore, T. Klipp, K. Meklenburg, W. Csajko. Standing: Mr. Wells, D. Cook, M. Ficuril- li, G. Rhinow, B. Blasko, P. Kelly. W. Kraw. After winning the League Six championship in 1971, and with four of our five top runners back, hopes were high for another title. The Porters came close, ending the season with a fine 8-3 overall record. Two one point losses to Pierson and Mattituck cost us the champion- ship. Key injuries to Pat Kelly and Bill Kraw were too much of a handicap to overcome. On the bright side was the running of Greg Rhinow. Greg, who was undefeated in the nine regular season meets, set new course records on five separate occa- sions. The members of the team who comprised the first five besides Rhinow, Kraw, and Kelly were Mike Ficu- rilli and Bruce Blasko. Track 1st Row P Kelly J. Whitecavage, T. Yates, W. Wright, R. Checklick, J. Terry, L. Giovanelli, J. Heaney, C. Monsell, C. Volinski, D. Ruroede, B. Pell, L. Zeh- ner, P. Frumenti, G. Burke, Coach Connolly. With the loss of only one senior last year, the 1973 track team should be well on its way to a championship season. The GHS Cindermen have entered a newly formed League Six track competition. A strong senior contingent led by Bob Chute, Tom Yates, Bill Kraw, Tom Hickey, Bill Csajko, Mike Wiggin, and Dave Cook will lead a well-balanced group of underclassmen. Along with the boys, many girls have also shown promise. Through the leadership of Coach Connolly, and the enthusiasm of the team, there is great hope for a victo- rious year. Varsity Baseball Kneeling: H. Burden, K. Meklenburg, W. Richter, T. Klipp, J. Geier, M. Van Wyck, P. Carey. Standing: Coach Wells, S. Damiani, J. Rogers, P. Mueller, S. Skrezec, D. Gamer, G. Rhinow, B. Blasko, J. Hartman. After winning the League Six championship in 1971, and losing many of its veteran players, the outlook for 1972 was dim. The team did get off to a poor start, losing six straight games, but then righted itself to win nine of its last eleven games to finish in third place with a record of nine wins and eight losses. The prospects for 1973 appear brighter because some of the play- ers who sparked the surge last year are back. The boys who picked up the pitching staff last year were lefty Greg Rhinow and righty Jeff Rogers. Rhinow won four games last year while Rogers won two. Also picking up the team were Jeff Geier, a freshman, who came up from the jayvees to take over and do an excellent job as short- stop. Another jayvee, Jessie Hartman, did a good job catching and had a hot bat. Steve Damiani, a returning veteran, is expected to take over center field position and bat third in the order. Bruce Blasko and Kip Skrezec are expected to handle infield duties. If the pitching is as good as expected, and the infield shapes up, the Porters could be in the title fight this year. 72 Golf 1st Row: T. Anderson, J. Clark, T. Van Popering, T. Tyrer. 2nd Row: Mr. Burlingame, J. Richter, M. Van Tuyl, C. Cor- win, R. McGinnis, M. Thornhill. This year’s golf team shows lots of promise. The six starters will all be underclassmen. Returning starters from last year are Bill Fuccillo, Mark Van Tuyl, Jamie Richter, and Carl Corwin. The other two positions will be fought for by Gary Fuccillo, Mike Thornhill, Dan Archer, Jamie Clark, Tom Van Popering, Tim Tyrer, Bill Coulter, and Ted Anderson. Bill Fuccillo, last year’s league champion and N.Y. State qualifier, will head up the team, challenged closely by Mark Van Tuyl. Greenport will be fighting for the league championship, contested mainly by Bellport and Sayville. The fine coaching of Mr. Burlingame, the hard working boys, and a few putts dropping at the right time should give Green- port a successful season. Wrestling 1st Row: N. Stilley, J. Busso, T. Next year Greenport will also be represented on a varsity level. A combination of experienced wres- tlers and new talent resulted in a successful record of nine wins and three losses. Matches held in the new gymnasium generated enthusiasm throughout the community. Hundreds of spectators enjoyed G.H.S.’s newest exciting sport. 75 J.V. Baseball Kneeling: J. Getches, F. Hulse, J.
