Dedication Mr. Walter I. Williams Mr. Williams is retiring in June after thirteen years of vocal music teaching here at G.H.S. and a total of thirty-four years of service in music education. As news of his retirement got around this spring, a genuine sense of loss, one might say - of dismay —, came over the student body. We Seniors, who entered kindergarten in 1956, the year Mr. Williams joined the G.H.S. faculty, and leave with him this June, can sympathize with those who no longer will enjoy his inspired teaching. It is with great pleasure that we deaicate this 1969 Beachcomber to Mr. Williams in gratitude for all he has done for us and been to us in the years we have known him. We feel there is no better way to communicate our feelings here than to give a sampling of comments from various underclassmen including those who haven’t actually had him in class: A wonderful, devoted person, he has given this school its enthusiasm for music . . . good-natured, friendly, easy to talk to ... a man of understanding, knows his work, makes music seem like an art — like a great painting ... at New Paltz I found out he was a good guy ... he used to try to get everyone to speak properly ... a very nice man who likes music ana kids ... he is a musician, an artist, and a man ... has great patience but knows just when to put down his foot . . . very generous ... an outgoing man with interesting hobbies ... a friend to almost every student in Greenport . . . very fair and doesn't play favorites . . . really tries to make his chorus sound good — works at this all the time, never gives up . . . greatest musical ability of anyone I’ve ever known . . . last year during a chorus rehearsal, we got one passage of Bacn’s Sanctus sounding almost perfect — ne was thrilled — it seemed to bring tears to his eyes . . . has an overwhelming love of music . . . warm person . . . worked with the chorus on his lunch period and at night . . . always in a good mood and if he ever got mad it wasn’t very long . . . took pride in his work . . . great conductor, built up the G.H.S. choral groups from almost nothing . . . perhaps his love for the outdoors explains his open-minded methods of teaching ... a real great guy always willing to help someone in need ... a very smart man, especially in music . . . very strong — strong enough so that you don’t get him mad . . . seems to be able to mix fun with work, and the students appreciate that . . . very modest, always gives credit where credit is due . . . will meet you more than half way ... a quiet man but when he has something to say you hear him . . . will hate to see him go . . . will never forget our sessions with him and wish him a fine and fond farewell. 2
