Dedication Mr. Walter I. Williams Mr. Williams is retiring in June after thirteen years of vocal music teaching here at G.H.S. and a total of thirty-four years of service in music education. As news of his retirement got around this spring, a genuine sense of loss, one might say - of dismay —, came over the student body. We Seniors, who entered kindergarten in 1956, the year Mr. Williams joined the G.H.S. faculty, and leave with him this June, can sympathize with those who no longer will enjoy his inspired teaching. It is with great pleasure that we deaicate this 1969 Beachcomber to Mr. Williams in gratitude for all he has done for us and been to us in the years we have known him. We feel there is no better way to communicate our feelings here than to give a sampling of comments from various underclassmen including those who haven’t actually had him in class: A wonderful, devoted person, he has given this school its enthusiasm for music . . . good-natured, friendly, easy to talk to ... a man of understanding, knows his work, makes music seem like an art — like a great painting ... at New Paltz I found out he was a good guy ... he used to try to get everyone to speak properly ... a very nice man who likes music ana kids ... he is a musician, an artist, and a man ... has great patience but knows just when to put down his foot . . . very generous ... an outgoing man with interesting hobbies ... a friend to almost every student in Greenport . . . very fair and doesn't play favorites . . . really tries to make his chorus sound good — works at this all the time, never gives up . . . greatest musical ability of anyone I’ve ever known . . . last year during a chorus rehearsal, we got one passage of Bacn’s Sanctus sounding almost perfect — ne was thrilled — it seemed to bring tears to his eyes . . . has an overwhelming love of music . . . warm person . . . worked with the chorus on his lunch period and at night . . . always in a good mood and if he ever got mad it wasn’t very long . . . took pride in his work . . . great conductor, built up the G.H.S. choral groups from almost nothing . . . perhaps his love for the outdoors explains his open-minded methods of teaching ... a real great guy always willing to help someone in need ... a very smart man, especially in music . . . very strong — strong enough so that you don’t get him mad . . . seems to be able to mix fun with work, and the students appreciate that . . . very modest, always gives credit where credit is due . . . will meet you more than half way ... a quiet man but when he has something to say you hear him . . . will hate to see him go . . . will never forget our sessions with him and wish him a fine and fond farewell. 2 MEMBERS OF THE BOARD: Mr. William Mueller. This year Congressman Otis G. Pike made an unexpected but welcome visit to G.H.S. His frank exchange of views with members of the Senior Class (and some interloping underclassmen) was a highlight of the fall season. Hang down your head, Jim Brandi. Ring around the rosie! Pals ’til the end. Can it! Class As the caps and gowns flowed down the familiar auditorium for the last time on June 22, 1969, the sound of “Pomp and Circumstance” brought tears to our eyes as we remembered our past four years at G. H. 5. It all began one September morning in 1966 as we found our lockers and assembled in our homerooms with a maximum amount of confusion. We held our first class meeting in the early fall and elected our officers: Colin Van Tuyl, President; Bill Price, Vice-President; Barbara Helinski, Treasurer; Joylene Dinizio, Secretary. The months passed quickly and, before we knew it, we were making plans for our first dance, “Leprechaun’s Discotheque”. It was a great success and we even had our live leprechaun (John White in disguise!). We began our sophomore year by re-electing the same President and Secretary, with Jeff Sherwood as Treasurer, and Bill Price as Vice-President. It was soon time to start thinking about our two semi-formals. “Swinging Chalet” fit right in witn the Christmas season as the gym was transformed into a lovely living room setting complete with fireplace. Then came “Floral Fountain' in the spring and the gym burst into bloom with hundreds of flowers. Summer passed all too quickly and soon we were back at G.H.S., but now things were different. We were the upperclassmen. We re-elected Joylene Dinizio as Secretary, with Wayne Mazzaferro as President; Laurie Peterson as Vice-President; and Karen Mazzaferro as Treasurer. Our next thoughts were occupied by planning our Halloween dance, “Halloween Happening”. Local Hoboes. Hanky-Panky? Floral Fountain? History Our rings finally arrived early in February, and our Valentine’s dance, “Cupid’s Kaleidoscope” gave us a good place to show them off. Time flew, and soon after tne spring car wash, which gave our treasury a huge boost. Regents were upon us. Somehow, we managed to struggle through the exams and then eagerly looked forward to Prom night. “Paris by Night” was beautiful — from the sidewalk cafes to the Eiffel Tower. The highlight of the evening was the coronation of Laurie Peterson by the previous queen, Laura Yantsos. It was hard to believe that we would go back to G.H.S. as Seniors, but it didn’t take us long to get used to the fact that we were on top. Our last year began in August when we started the magazine drive. Although we couldn't meet the challenge set by the last year’s Seniors, we weren’t behind with $8200. Our Senior officers were: Colin Van Tuyl, President; Jeff Sherwood, Vice-President; Jovlene Dinizio, Secretary; and Karen Mazzaferro. Treasurer. We were now faced with the burden of college applications, interviews, college boards, and achievement tests. Then came the usual time of year when everyone on the Beachcomber staff was suffering from a good case of the jitters as deadlines drew near. At last — spring and our trip to Washington, D.C. The four days we spent there would not easily be forgotten. Now for the last time we moved forward as a group, knowing that in a short time we would pass through the doors of G.H.S. and each one of us would take a separate path into the future. The school budget had been defeated several times and the sports program was apparently doomed. Fortunately, however, Mr. Gene Mazzaferro and Mr. Ed Geier, two fathers of GHS athletes, decided to do something positive about the problem and they collected money from many generous citizens of Greenport and even from a few public spirited out-of-towners. As a result of their efforts, our sports program got on its feet. We were only able to get in five games in '68. beating Westhampton 33-13 and William Floyd 7-6. We put up a good fight in our three losing games against Longwood, Southampton and Riverhead. Despite missing three games, we still put up an excellent showing in the individual honors with Wayne Mazzaferro being named all-league halfback. Honorable mentions were Curtis Yates, Bill Lakowitz. Tom Foster and Colin Van Tuyl. At the end of the season the prospects looked bright for the next two years. The line looked good with Jeff Bubb, Jerry Foster, Gary Herzog, Chet Klopotowski, Doug Riemer, Dave Andrews, Phil Charters, Mark Eckhardt and Craig Geier. The backfield was in question though it would probably include John Stepnoski and Tim Reeves alternating at quarterback. Also seeing action in the backfield would be Rich Staron, Mark Corazzini, Scot Rogers and Tom Shedrick. Gone from the next year’s team was Wayne Mazzaferro, Colin Van Tuyl, Tom Foster, Curt Yates, Bill Lakowitz, Jeff Sherwood, Jim Brandi, Bart Ruroede and Bob Zipkas. Coach Dorrie Jackson was confident of a good season for the following year. He felt we would be fighting for the championship because the good young players on the team would be able to start practicing in August (if the budget, pray God. were passed.) 64 SEA TED: J. Glew. Van Tuyl The GHS basketball team was the youngest in the county this year. The starting team consisted of one senior, three sophomores and one freshman — Alan Edwards — who may be the only freshman in the history of Suffolk County to score as many points as he did, (360). He ranked 15th in the county in points scored per game. The only senior on the team was Wayne Mazzaferro who as the team captain inspired the younger boys with his hustle and desire. Phil Charters. Don Halliwell, and Tucker Wells, who are only sophomores, completed the starting five. John Stepnoski who is also a sophomore was a leading sub as were juniors Gary Herzog and Rich Staron. The team also had another fine freshman in Tom Shedrick. This team’s tallest player was 6' Phil Charters making it one of the shortest teams in recent memory. Coach Manwaring hopes an added years growth will make the Porters a real tough foe in 1970. With a little height GHS could well reverse this year’s 5-9 record in the years to come. The nucleus of this year’s squad could in a few years make Greenport one of the county’s top teams. KNEELING: R. Staron, W. Mazzaferro. W. Shedrick, J. Stepnoski, T. Wells; STANDING: Coach Manwaring. Cross Country The 1968 season again proved to be successful for the GHS harriers as we won the League Six championship and our 3rd straight League Six “East End” meet. Throughout the season we had three juniors battling each other for first place: Jim Finno, Fred Jones and Spencer Mims. Right behind them were John Bondarchuk, Dave Young, Chris Mueller and Tom Grodski. The Greenport team not only won the championship, but it did it in style by going undefeated during the regular season. In the four years of its existence, the Greenport cross country team has won three championships. The credit must go to Coach Wells for his fine coaching and to the team for its spirit and hard work. Next year the prospects look bright for another fine season. Most of the team will be back, though the team will lose Fred Jones who transferred to another school, and Dave Levine who will graduate. 68 KNEELING: J. Sherwood. T. Wells. R. Staron, R. Gagen. M. Baseball In 1968 the Porters got into the section eleven baseball playoff's by finishing second with a 13-5 record. In the playoffs we were defeated by a strong Islip team. According to Coach Wells, the prospects look good this year. We will be strong in pitching with a good infield, but the big question mark will be our hitting. The team seems to have good speed. We lost Tom Quillin, Rich Sycz, Bob Robinson. Dennis Bubb and Bill Mueller from last year’s team. Returning, however, will be Danny Ship, Colin Van Tuyl, Gary Herzog. Russ Gagen, Rich Staron, Willy Shedrick, Don Halliwell and Tucker Wells. With a pitching staff composed of Rich Staron, Tucker Wells, Craig Geier in relief, and possibly Danny Ship, we will be in the playoffs if the hitting comes through. 70 In 1969 for the first time, the G.H.S. golf team found itself playing in a league. In past years playing a non-league schedule Greenport had been very successful. This year we hoped our first year of league competition would bring us a championship. We were without Scott Harris, however, and that made the job difficult since he had been number one man for two years. As we went to press, our team looked pretty solid in the first three positions with Jerry Mazzaferro playing in the number one position. The number two and three positions were likely to be held by Dave Levine and Nick Mazzaferro. Filling out the team in the 4th, 5th, and 6th positions were Walt Peterson, Gordon Tyrer and Mark Burden. Some of the newcomers to the team were also expected to see action. The prospects looked bright for Coach Burlingame, and if some key players were able to come through, Greenport would be fighting for the championship. Bowling KNEELING: M. Sage. R Young. F. Baldwin, M. Wiederlighi, N. Mazzaferro; STANDING: D. Racket!, B. Damiani, R. Zipkas. Bt Dimon, P. Harris, Mr. Campbell. This year the bowling team won ten games for a fourth place finish. The team was better than the record indicates, however, because it lost many close games. Seniors who will be missed on future teams are Dave Rackett, Bruce Dimon and Bob Zipkas. According to Coach Campbell, however, there are good prospects coming up. These include Randy Young, Nick Mazzaferro, Mike Sage, Brad Damiani, Marc Wiederlight, Peter Harris and Fred Baldwin. AM0...- 1919 GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY 1969 THE AMERICAN LEGION “FIFTY YEARS OF SERVICE FOR GOD AND COUNTRY” The American Legion, celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 1969, is fundament- ally a patriotic organization, dedicated and devoted to advancing the ideals of America — justice, freedom, democracy, and loyalty — and to exalting, under the motto “For God and Country,” the sacredness of human personality and the inestimable gift of American citizenship. Founded in Paris on March 15, 1919 by 1,000 representatives of the American Expeditionary Force, The American Legion currently has more than 2.6 million members (veterans of four wars: World Wars 1 and II, Korean and Vietnam Conflicts) in some 16,000 Posts in the United States and abroad. Bound together in comradeship and service, Legionnaires (“Veterans as Citizens”) actively devote their efforts to four major programs: Americanism, Child Welfare, Rehabilitation, and National Security. In addition to working for handicapped veterans, their widows and orphans, an emphasis is placed on citizenship development of youth, with over five million participating each year, in such programs as Boys State, Legion Baseball and a national oratorical contest.
