With the cooperation and support of the Board of Edu- cation Dr. Neidich pushed for a progressive expanding program at G.H.S. on many fronts: a step up in vocational education highlighted by a cooperative work experience program; the establishment of department chairmen; the introduction of conversational French in the grades and French and Spanish in the Junior High; the offering of new electives in the high school; the institution of summer school sessions for Regents as well as non-Regents subjects; the arrangement for evening extension courses of Suffolk County Community College; and a renewed support of ex- tracurricular activities were some of his achievements. Ilis willingness to experiment, to support constructive measures, and his refusal to allow red tape to strangle the energies of his faculty were much appreciated. G.H.S. has been gradually outgrowing its exist- ing facilities. ABOVE: The State Education Department last year required that an enclosed fire escape be added to both north wings. The northeast addition you see above. By ingenious planning, however, our administration man- aged to meet the state’s exacting demands on the west wing without constructing a similar three-story shaft. Instead, with the same money they made the required alterations on the sec- ond floor and provided badly needed new lab facilities on the third floor for the biological, chemical sciences. MIDDLE: The former Herzog home just west of the school was pur- chased to provide a self-contained Home Eco- nomics plant for Mrs. Fox and her students. Her former location was converted into three classrooms. BOTTOM: Mother Me Cauley Home just east of the school was leased on a no fee basis (except for maintenance expenses) to provide facilities for the special education pro- grams of Mrs. Polatnick and Mrs. Dardiri.

Principal Mr. A. Calvin Peterson. Although Mr. Peterson officially took over the reins of G.H.S. on January 1, 1966, he spent the better part of the preceding December familiarizing himself with operations. His former position was that of supervising principal at Chester, New York. With his wife and four chil- dren — Laurelle, Susan, Samuel and Janet — Mr. Peterson will be residing in Green- port. The Class of 1966 welcomes Mr. Pe- terson on behalf of the student body and assures him of their support. Board of Education MEMBERS OF THE BOARD: Mr. William Pell, 111, Dr. George (outgoing principal), Mr. F. W. Gardiner (School District Clerk), E. Cottral, Mr. Reginald B. Hudson, (Pres.), Dr. Arthur J. Goldin Mr. A. Calvin Peterson (incoming principal). (V.P.), Mr. Henry F. Hulse. STANDING: Dr. Robert Neidich
