f ■BSt-.'-i: jl . Jm:. .. - -• Yearbook Staff Co-editors: Gigi Wells, Jean Jurzenia Business Manager: Harris Levine Art Editor: James Powell Adviser: Mr. Gildersleeve Dr. Robert Neidich Dr. Neidich came to Greenport in 1957 as elemen- tary supervisor (B.C.E.S.). In 1958 he became assistant principal and in 1959 was appointed supervising prin- cipal, succeeding Mr. Gilbert Banker. His position here terminated on December 31, 1965 when he left to assume his responsibilities as assistant super- intendent of the Levittown Public Schools. We, the Class of 1966, were fourth graders when he first came here in 1957. As Seniors we wish Dr. Neidich and his family happiness and success in his new position. With the cooperation and support of the Board of Edu- cation Dr. Neidich pushed for a progressive expanding program at G.H.S. on many fronts: a step up in vocational education highlighted by a cooperative work experience program; the establishment of department chairmen; the introduction of conversational French in the grades and French and Spanish in the Junior High; the offering of new electives in the high school; the institution of summer school sessions for Regents as well as non-Regents subjects; the arrangement for evening extension courses of Suffolk County Community College; and a renewed support of ex- tracurricular activities were some of his achievements. Ilis willingness to experiment, to support constructive measures, and his refusal to allow red tape to strangle the energies of his faculty were much appreciated. G.H.S. has been gradually outgrowing its exist- ing facilities. ABOVE: The State Education Department last year required that an enclosed fire escape be added to both north wings. The northeast addition you see above. By ingenious planning, however, our administration man- aged to meet the state’s exacting demands on the west wing without constructing a similar three-story shaft. Instead, with the same money they made the required alterations on the sec- ond floor and provided badly needed new lab facilities on the third floor for the biological, chemical sciences. MIDDLE: The former Herzog home just west of the school was pur- chased to provide a self-contained Home Eco- nomics plant for Mrs. Fox and her students. Her former location was converted into three classrooms. BOTTOM: Mother Me Cauley Home just east of the school was leased on a no fee basis (except for maintenance expenses) to provide facilities for the special education pro- grams of Mrs. Polatnick and Mrs. Dardiri. Mr. Salvatore Vindigni For all of your patience and guidance in our high school years, the Corps of ’66 thanks you. In Recognition of The Greatest Marine May your years — Mr. and Mrs. Vindigni, Danny and Sally — lie happy ones in your new home! Principal Mr. A. Calvin Peterson. Although Mr. Peterson officially took over the reins of G.H.S. on January 1, 1966, he spent the better part of the preceding December familiarizing himself with operations. His former position was that of supervising principal at Chester, New York. With his wife and four chil- dren — Laurelle, Susan, Samuel and Janet — Mr. Peterson will be residing in Green- port. The Class of 1966 welcomes Mr. Pe- terson on behalf of the student body and assures him of their support. Wells (Sec.-Treas.), R. Terry, C. Brigham. Class The caps and gowns flow down the familiar auditorium, marking our last day at Greenport High. Each one of us is looking to the future remembering the past four years. It all started on a perfectly normal September day. We had assembled in our homerooms without too much trouble. Freshman year was a mad scramble of lock- ers, “big kids’ , and new teachers. Early in the fall we elected officers — Jackie Ed- wardson, president; Richie Chute, vice-president: Joan Helinski, secretary; and Shar- on Thornhill, treasurer. Months passed and soon it was time to think about our first dance, the Emerald Isle. Much planning and hard work molded the gym into a little bit of old Ireland itself. Although the dance was a financial flop (we made a profit of $1.65!) we learned a lot about organization. Sophomore year brought new status to the class. We elected Bob Wells, presi- dent; Gary Klipp, vice-president; Gigi Wells, secretary; and tyrant Harris Levine as our “tax collector”. Our semi-formal Sleigh Bells, with ‘sane, adult-type’ music didn’t go over too big — kids just like to be kids! Spring Fling, transforming the gym into a garden of thousands of paper flowers, was a huge success. Fall again, and upperclassmen! Already we started to exert our pressure on the “lower classes”. We conserved on decorations for our Halloween dance, “Be-- witched”. We made a pretty fabulous profit though and everyone seemed to be en- joying themselves in spite of the simplicity. The sophomore officers werc carried over through the junior year and they handled the class very smoothly. December 4th — our class rings were ordered. Nothing can describe'liow we felt — our progress through high school was for the first time truly visible. Our romantic “Coeurs d’ Amour” brought a flurry of heart-throbs and heart-aches at our Valentine dance. Spring caught us up with the excitement of the seniors. Our ring came and History we had days of holding our hands out proudly for all to admire. After suffering through tough regents exams we drifted through a beautiful “Polynesian Night at the Prom. Summer brought us the realization that now we were the “big kids” — SENIORS! Our magazine drive really brought the stragglers into one great big group. Our suc- cess story was fabulous — over $8,000 — the new record. The Class of ’66 was now the best, financially at least. After electing Gary Klipp, president; Johnny Adams, vice-president; and Gigi and Harris again as secretary and treasurer, we sat back and watched the underclassmen struggle through the dances and trivia once so im- portant to us. We cheered our team with added vigor through “Class Cheer” when we could scream to the world our present status as the Top in the school. Our wave of school spirit carried on to our much improved basketball team and helped to bring the seniors together. Despite the few (?) morning headaches, we had to con- tend with college boards, applications, acceptances, and interviews that caused us much anxiety and some studying. Mid-terms brought a few repercussions, but to most it meant the long stretch to Washington. Finally April came and our four fabulous days are ones that bring many personal memories of great times — some never to be forgotten (our chaperones are still trying to recover). Now at the last stage of our high school career, we can’t help but speculate who will gain fame, happiness or sorrow. Many of the faces so familiar, in time will be forgotten. This is the last time we shall move together as a group, as a class, as the Class of the year — 1966. Each of us looks to the future and I w'ish you luck. S.B. Honest, I didn't do it The Good L. Juniors As we returned to G.H.S. after a carefree sum- mer, it hardly seemed possible that we, the Class of 1967, were Juniors at last. With the election of Ed Copin as president, John Hanff as vice-president, Betty Jester as secretary and Judy Cook as trea- surer, we began the busiest year we had yet en- countered at G.H.S. The first half of the year flew by in a whirl of ac- tivities. Tradition called for the Junior Class to sponsor the first social event of the year, the Hal- loween dance. Entitled “Halloween a Go-Go,” it proved to be a tremendous success in every way. The next important event on our busy agenda was the ordering of class rings. With this accomplished, we really began to feel like upperclassmen. January of 1966 found us hard at work trying to improve our sad financial condition. The Valentine’s dance and various other fund raising activities gave our treasury the boost it needed. Suddenly spring was here and we were all busy working and planning for the Junior-Senior Prom. It was a wonderful affair which we will all remem- ber as the highlight of our Junior year. As we struggled through Regents and final exams we realized that our Junior year was now drawing to its close. With three years of wonderful memo- ries and unique experiences behind us, we would now be Seniors! Sophomores Officers W. Cooper (Pres.), K. Norkelun (Sec.), B. Wells (Treas.), A. Brandi (V. Pres.). Football The 1965 G.H.S. football team, represented largely by underclassmen, turned in a fine season with a record of five wins, two losses and one tie. With the loss of key personnel due to graduation, three backfield spots and several places on the line were vacant. Through much hard work and co- operation, the team began to jell and became one of the top offensive and defensive teams in the county. The backfield, although boasting no breakaway runner as in the past, was made up of fine blockers, and hard runners. Juniors Ken Watson and Don Sta- ron were the workhorses doing practically all of the ballcarrying, and Dave Tuthill, another junior, proved an excellent blocker and fine receiver. Rounding out the backfield senior Bob Wells, in his third year as varsity quarterback, along with junior Lee Fitting, did a fine job all season long of running the Porter offense. Greenport’s line did an outstanding job opening holes all season long. It featured Richard Chute (who was elected by the coaches to the league all star team) and Jim Powell both seniors along with juniors John Hanff, Bob Heany (both defensive standouts as well), and Kevin Laub who did a fine job at center. Senior John Adams and juniors Chris Morey and Ed Copin are to be commended on their fine job at end this season. On defense, senior Bob Moore, along with junior Lionel Wilson (another all-leaguer) loomed large in one of the toughest defensive lines in the league. Alan Andrews, only a sophomore, also performed notably on the defensive line. Perhaps the highlight of the “65” campaign came when G.H.S. hosted arch rival Southampton. This was a day of glory for Greenport. It was the first time since the seniors were eighth graders that a Porter football team had beaten the Mariners. Prospects for next year’s team appear bright with twenty-two juniors from this year’s team and only seven seniors graduating. Coach Jackson and Assistant Coach Manwaring are to be congratulated on ther fine job through a most trying season. Varsity SEATED: A. Andrews, J. Wielandt, C. Morey, K. Watson, L. Fitting, B. Basketball This year, under the direction of Coach Manwar- ing, the Porters posted a 6-12 record against many bigger and more experienced squads. Playing with almost an entire Junior team, the Oystermen were plagued somewhat by inexperience. Upset victories over league champion Bellport and highly rated Mattituck provided the greatest satisfaction to the team and the biggest thrills for our rooting section throughout the campaign. Individually, Senior Bob Wells led the squad in scoring with an 18.1 average (326 points) and 1,032 points as a career total, becoming the second player in G.H.S. history to top the one thousand mark. Junior Dave Tuthill, averaging 11.6 per game (208 points), was the club’s number two scorer as well as a top defender and ballhawk. John Hanff (182 points) scored consistently and teamed up with John Charters (76 points) to form the team’s top rebound- ers. Rounding out the starting five, was Lee Fitting a real team man, excellent on defense. Senior John Adams, who was the team’s number one reserve, saw frequent action and proved himself a team leader. Rick Smith, Ken Powell, and Gene Mazza- ferro, although seeing limited action, progressed well and should be ready to move up next season. A brief look at the Jayvees shows a six win-eight loss record. Bob Robinson with 174 points, and Steve Burt with 123 were the top scorers. Coaches Manwaring and MacDonald are to be commended for their excellent supervision through- out the year. Varsity KNEELING: G. Mazzaferro, J. Charters, L. Fitting, R. Wells, D. ager), W. Baseball The 1966 edition of the Greenport High School Baseball Team started workouts under new mentor Coach Wells on March first. With a good share of veterans returning, the outlook was optimistic for a successful season. The main problem was to find an outfield, as the entire unit had graduated last year. Replacing ace pitcher Bob Foster was the oth- er problem facing the porter squad. The only returning pitcher was veteran Bob Wells with a twelve won-two loss record. Fighting it out for the other pitching spots were John Charters, Don Staron, and Chris Morey. The strong point for Greenport was its inner defense consisting of John Charters at third, Joe Gordon at short, Dave Tuthill at sec- ond, and either Lionell Wilson or Bob Moore at first. Catching, was to be handled by one of the league’s best. Bob Heaney. With a few breaks, G.H.S. might be in the thick of the pennant flight. Varsity FIRST ROW: R. Heaney, R. Douglass, J. Gordon, D. Cross-Country This year Cross-Country was added to the GHS repertoire of inter-scholastic athletics for the first time. The Purple and Gold harriers under the su- pervision of Coach Wells did remarkably well in their “rookie” season. Led by (Barefoot) Bruce Finno, vsho raced to five victories in six outings, the Porters placed sec- ond in league standings, posting a seven and one record as well as finishing third in the league championship. Also to be commended for a fine job all season are Bruce Urban, Tim Clingen and the Drake brothers Bob and Dick, who all were good “place men” behind Finno. Prospects for next year’s team appear bright since almost the entire team is composed of under- classmen. Congratulations to the boys and Coach Wells on a job well done. Further congratulations are in order for Bruce Finno, Greenport’s number one mnner, who in the post season activities placed second in the Class C section of Suffolk County. Bruce Finno — our barefoot boy with cheek — takes a breather after placing second in the Sunken Mead- ow cross-country competition. 64 Track As the track season got underway Coach MacDonald, taking over from Coach Wells who was now handling base- ball on a neighboring field, felt he had a monumental task before him. Aware of the fine track squads G.H.S. had fielded in the last decade or so (5 county and 4 league championships) he eyed the future grimly but hopefully. His early season squad consisted of forty-five to fifty ath- letes. Returning lettermen who were ex- pected to carry the team were co-captains Richard Chute and Ed Copin, John Doroski, Mike Heaney, Bruce Finno, Cur- tis Yates, Willie King and the Drake brothers (Dick and Bob). Coach MacDon- ald hoped that the enthusiastic support of Greenport’s track fans on Wednesday af- ternoons would spur his men to victory. FIRST ROW: W. King, M. Heaney, D. Staron, B. Finno, A.
