This team was given the monumental job of starting from scratch to build up the class treasury for that far-off trip to Washington and all those other expenses of the Senior year. The class-sponsored dance was well received, and other fund-raising efforts gave the infant treasury its first important additions. The Sophomore year saw A1 Horton and Adrienne returned as president and secretary, respectively, with new recruits to the upper echelon in the persons of Fred Axclson as vice-president and Mella Lakowitz as treasurer. The big Christmas Dance received the class’s undivided attention in the first half-year. The great social and finan- cial success of this enterprise was a much-welcomed reward for a great deal of work. A spring dance, a cake sale and a car wash (some pictures of which are on page 24) closed the year. Our Junior year brought us face to face with our financial problems and like all Junior classes we were worried. As officers the class elected Dave Ott president, and Wendy Bie treasurer, with Fred and Adrienne being rc-clcctcd to their respective posts. In desperation efforts to boost the class treasury, we embarked on a money-making campaign which saw the class hold two car washes and a cake sale and also saw an intensive dues drive by Wendy which brought ducs-owcd down from over $150 to less than $30. The last half of the year was a time of great activity as the class received their rings (standardized for the first time in the history of the school) and prepared for the Prom. “Soiree a Paris,” as this final effort of the year was called, brought a burst of feverish activity from the class and demanded everyone’s help, but we were all pleased to find the Prom the success that it was. Then, Seniors at last! Our officers were Dave Ott as president, Fred Axelson as vice-president, Lee Ellen Fox (who had succeeded Wendy when the latter moved away in February of the Junior year) as treasurer, and Adrienne Moskovey as secretary. This final year at G.H.S. opened with the tremendous two-week magazine campaign that brought in over $1,600 profit to the class. Elated by this success and seeing our fortunes rising, we went on to give our thespian effort of the year (see pages 12 and 13) which was financially a resounding triumph. Then came the advertising and Booster cam- paigns for the yearbook. Under Adrienne Moskovcy’s very capable direction, these campaigns a great achieve- ment. Before we could catch a breath, the spring vaca- tion had arrived and we were off to Washington on that long-awaited trip. And then came June and Com- mencement. As we looked back with nostalgia at all that these four years meant, and looked forward with hope and anticipation, some of us stopped for a moment to search out the value of it all, and we came to the conclusion that perhaps our years at G.H.S. were more than mere activities, more even than studies and learning (though that was important to many of us) : the years were, in fact, for good or ill, a chapter of our lives. We would remember it; it would be indissolubly imprinted on our minds; it would become a part of us even as we wrote to it FINIS. Juniors Reflective that its first two years had flown by so quickly, and optimistic about the two years ahead, the Class of ’63, advised by Mr. John Campbell, be- gan its Junior year by electing Jim Snead as presi- dent, Donna McNeill as vice-president, John Ebeling as treasurer, and Rosemary McNeill as secretary. Dick Gloria, Carol Levin, and Marlene Lieblein were ap- pointed student council representatives. After an objective appraisal of its financial re- sources, the class set out on a year of fund-raising to fill its starving treasury for the imminent Senior year expenses. A very successful food sale followed by the Junior-sponsored Halloween dance — ‘'Be- witching Hours” — fed the hungering treasury well during the fall months. In December an extended cookie sale helped the Juniors along; in February they organized the traditional Valentine’s Dance; in the spring the class gave a skating party, car wash, and another successful food sale. As June ap- proached, the Juniors were busily planning the Prom, which was enchanting and provided a glowing cli- max to their third year at G.H.S.! FIRST ROW: E. Simmons, C. Levin, C. Simpson, M. Football By special arrangement with The Purple Quill and Mr. Curtis Martin: Defying all early season predictions, the Green- port football team won its sixth straight cham- pionship this year. Our backfield (Joe Reiter at fullback, Gary Jackson and Warren Mitchell at halfback, and Curtis Martin at quarterback) was a devastatingly powerful unit. The big question mark was the quality of our line. The biggest obstacles there were inexperience and lack of numbers from which to pick a starting line. But with the addi- tion of Halsey Tuthill, the line began to take shape. For the opening game our starting offensive and defensive lines contained one freshman, two sophomores, three juniors and three seniors. Up to this first game, with Patchogue, our team had not jelled, but a week’s effort at building up the defense paid off when we beat Hauppauge and put ourselves once again on the winning trail. The team continued in its series of victories to beat Easthampton (by Warren Mitchell’s winning touchdown made in the last four minutes of what had up to that moment been a “nightmare”), fn a rough game, the team made its maximum effort to defeat our strongest opponent, Wcsthampton. The final games, which were comparatively easy victories, brought the season to a triumphant close. This year’s football team had no single star. Each victory was the result of solid team effort, and it was this, more than any other single factor, that made Greenport a championship team. Gary Jackson was high scorer this year with 57 points. Jim Snead was close behind with 46 points. Though he scored less, Warren Mitchell ran beautifully. Joe Reiter threw key blocks which al- lowed our runners to get in the clear. Curtis Mar- tin at quarterback rounded out this superb and effective backfield. Our line, which progressed with each game at an unbelievable speed, was an- chored by seniors Barry Webb at tackle and Dick Dors at guard. Richard Gloria, center, and Halsey Tuthill, guard, did fine jobs. At ends we had Dave Miller and Charles Boldin, who both caught many passes during the season. On defense Greenport was led by the ferocious tackling of Halsey Tut- hill. Tom Rinehart (only a freshman), Barry Copin and Bob Worrell came in on defense and per- formed excellently. But Greenport’s football glory would never have been possible but for our tremendous coaching staff, headed by Dorrie Jackson, with Sal Vincligni ajid Richard Manwaring assisting. These men de- serve all the credit that could possibly be accorded them. For six years they have won for Greenport the championship by virtue of their football knowl- edge and their ability to transmit that knowledge to the players. For this outstanding job we thank them. Track Greenport’s 1962 track team should once again be a top contender for the championship.-Though quite a few men have been lost from the team, there will be ample replacements this year. Gone via graduation were Flip De Jesus, Reggie Wilson (both jump and dash event men), Dick Herzog (who ran the 440), and Pete Lieblein and Tom Sypher (both of whom put shot and threw the discus). These men were important cogs in the team that won the championship last year, but adequate reserves to cover the loss are found on this year’s team. Star of the squad will be Charley Boldin, pos- sibly the best dash man in the county. Last year in the East End Meet, Charley won both the 100 and 220. Also, in the medley relays Greenport cap- tured the mile relay title with Charley anchoring a team of Dick Herzog, Warren Mitchell, Reggie Wilson and himself. Gary Jackson, Warren Mitchell, Jim Snead, Chickie Chiochetto, and Ulysses Edwards are also returning letter-men from last year who are worthy of note. In the East End Meet last year Snead took a second in the discus and should fill Herzog’s shoes in the 440 this year. Chickie Chiochetto took second in the 220 in the Meet last year and should be finishing near the top in the 100 yard dash this year — along with Charley Boldin. Ulysses Edwards is also another fine dash man. He and Chiochetto were part of the team that won the 880 relay at the Meet. These same two men, along with Snead and Gary Jackson, won the 440 relay at the County Relays in Amity- ville last year. Gary Jackson is a fine pole vaulter and hurdler who picked up many points in these events last year, besides being a member of that 440 relay. Warren Mitchell is another fine hurdler and runner. He was also part of the relay team, along with Boldin, that won the mile relay in the county relays for the sixth straight year last sea- son. These boys, with other outstanding Juniors and Sophomores, should stand Greenport’s track team in quite good stead for the next few' years. We are looking to another East End Championship this year — our fifth in six years. —CM. 37 Varsity: FIRST ROW: U. Edwards. J. Jones, J. Snead, C. Boldin, C. Chiochetto; SECOND ROW: Coach Wells, D. While not winning the championship, they did finish fairly high in the final team standings for the league. The team this year was paced by Ulysses Edwards, Gary Jackson and Chickie Chiochetto at the guards; Dave Miller, Jim Snead, Jim Jones and Barry Webb at forwards and Charles Boldin at center. Greenport was involved in quite a few exciting games this year. Perhaps the most exciting was the Greenport-Easthampton game. Ulysses Edwards held Easthampton’s star to 13 points and Greenport won by the narrow margin of 47—46. In the Westhampton game, Greenport was way behind at the half, but in the second half went on a scoring spree that fell short by only eight points, finally losing the game 48—56. Greenport’s best performance of the year was against Center Moriches. In this game Greenport produced its highest total of the year: 74 to 48 in Greenport s favor. The Southold game was another see-saw battle for Greenport. Only in about the last minute of play did Southold pull ahead, hanging on to win 43—36. Top scorers for Greenport this year were Ulysses Edwards, Jim Jones and Jim Snead—all averaging around 10 points a game. Greenport this year showed more strength off the boards than it has in past seasons. This job was done mainly by Dave Miller, Charles Boldin, Barry Webb, Jim Snead and Jim Jones. The J.V. had a good season this year, showing much promise. Joe Reiter led the scoring with a 15 point average. Bob LaBad, Karlo Salminen and Sonny Morris pulled in the rebounds while Greg Brooks, Dave Corwin and King Wilson handled the ball and set up scores. Junior Varsity: FIRST ROW: G. Brooks, D. A lot of hard work went into putting on a halftime show. The musicians practiced long hours dur- ing activity periods and on Saturday mornings, and the effort certainly made the half-time shows the best ever. Later in the year this same energy was turned towards preparing for the Christ- mas Concert and the Spring Music Pro- gram, both productions being very well received. In its formal and dignified elections, the band elected Alan Horton as presi- dent, Cortland Brooks as vice-president, Claudia Reeves as secretary, and Mary Ann Slcdjeski as treasurer. Mimi Wells, Joanne Pemberton, and Donna Baldwin were chosen librarians. Allen Rackett was elected to the new and different job of student director to take over the direction of the band when necessary. With good officers, a dedicated and energetic director, and hard working mu- sicians, the band was a credit to the school, and Seniors felt proud to have this band playing at Commencement. 47 Girls’ Chorus Officers NYSSMA M. With lit- erary advice proffered by Mr. Gildersleeve, and technical assistance given by Mr. Mclndoe and Mr. Call, and following the creative policy of the editor, the paper blossomed into what was pro- nounced, nemine contradicente, the fullest flower- ing of school journalistic talent in recent years. By special arrangement with The Quill, we reprint portions of Miss Levin’s first editorial, published November 17, 1961, which gives the guiding phi- losophy of the paper: THE QUILL is an attempt to fill a wide gap in G.H.S. extra-curricular activities. We have cheerleaders, sports, music, and assorted special clubs, but we have no medium of communication among groups, among classes, as among students. THE QUILL hopes to provide a way not only for school activities and events to be publicized, but also for students to comment and give opin- ions on topics they choose — from the world situa- tion to the school situation. Hence, THE QUILL will not be strictly a school newspaper, but more a school news-magazine. THE QUILL has set for itself certain goals, the most important of which are to educate and to amuse the students of G.H.S. Amusement takes any forms, from grade poetry to odd statistics; education appears in the form of articles ranging from reports on new courses to reviews of well- liked books and records. In short, the aim of THE QUILL is to broaden G.H.S. understanding of itself, and create at G.H.S. a greater understanding of some of the main developments in modern literature and music. 52 D. Foreign Relations Club The Foreign Relations Club, newly formed this year, was the outgrowth of a half-year course — American Foreign Relations — offered in the fall term to Juniors and Seniors. The fourteen students in the class were so regretful at seeing the course end in January that Mr. Manwaring (who originated the class) made plans with Mr. Vindigni to form a history discussion club. The Foreign Relations Club which resulted from these plans includes Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors and Sen- iors selected on a scholarship basis. January saw the first of the club’s monthly meetings held in the cafeteria with refreshments served. Each meeting has a planned pro- gram (debate, lecture, report) presented by different members and perhaps a guest speaker. For example, Mr. Harry Beling showed his slides of Germany at one meet- ing, accompanying a debate on German re-unification; the Reverend Arthur Olsen spoke on bigotry and prejudice as basic factors in causing world tension and distrust (as well as causing strife between individuals) at a meeting which also had a debate on disarmament. Provocative debates, the enthusiastic support of the members, and delicious refreshments (which renew the members’ energy for the give-and-take of the debates) have all combined to make the Club one of the most enjoyable and successful in the school. — C.B.L. CHARLES CIOCHETTO whose name is misspelled in various places in the book. JAMES MALLETT whose name is also misspelled in different parts of the book. 60 A Letter from the Editor Dear Reader: Looking back over the past months of feverish, at times seemingly futile, effort to put out this yearbook, I have come to the conclusion that the whole job rests upon one support: co-operation. Without the willingly given co-operation of every- one in the school such an effort as this would founder in a storm of senseless bicker- ing and spite. I am happy that we were not overly troubled by lack of co-operation and that almost everyone eventually realized the pressure of time and circumstances which necessitated our actions. Of course, our activities did disrupt classes and cause dislocation for one or two days, but without that activity there would Have been no yearbook at all. Some people I would particularly like to thank are: — Adrienne whose tireless drive and unremitting toil as Business Manager saved the yearbook (and the class, too) from financial disaster; — Mr. Gildersleeve, whose advice and words of encouragement in the darkest hours of yearbook work when we had no camera and no copy to submit and whose self less spirit and dedication gave us all an example to overcome the obstacles; — Fred, whose work as photographer had to be carried on under almost im- possible conditions (what could be more impossible than taking pictures without a camera?); — Curt, who wrote matchless sports prose at short notice for our coverage of G.H.S. athletics; — Carol, who allowed me to plagiarize the Purple Quill, which saved me many hours of writing and rewriting of copy, and who also did a superb job on several articles of her own which appear on these pages. The 1962 Beachcomber does not, I know, satisfy everyone, and there are, indeed, many things I would myself have wished different. But I can truthfully say that we all did the best we could and none of us are ashamed of the result. D. H.
