Senior “Halsey, now don’t forget to ring the telephone! Remem- ber what happened at dress rehearsal? ... I know I'll for- get my lines, I just know I will! . . . Where’s my garden trowel? . . Becky, did the flowers come yet?. . . Ooh! My makeup’s running! . . . Shut up and get on stage!! ’ It was the night of December 9, 1960, when the Class of ’61 presented the incomparable hit, “Father’s Been To Mars,” a comedy in three acts. Afer six hard weeks of basic training under the able direction of Mr. Jaschob. (and with a few helpful hints from Cecil B. DeKaplan, I might add) this production proved to be very successful. Tony Mazzaferro, who skillfully portrayed the riotous Captain Galaxy, and the rest of the cast are to be com- mended for their excellent acting. The entire class can pat themselves on the back for a job well done. All the hard work on the scenery and costumes helped to make this a most memorable play. However, there were some trying mo- ments. When Zizi’s cigarette fell behind the table, everyone backstage was visualizing the Greenport Fire Department desperately trying to save the auditorium. And who can forget the time the door wouldn’t open! With the closing of the play, the spry seniors journeyed to June Raymond’s house in East Marion where a most memorable (and I mean memorable) party was held. There, in appreciation for their trying efforts, the class presented June and Maury with two most useful gifts?? Into the wee hours of the morning, the seniors danced and sang until Mr. Raymond could no longer stand it and threw everyone out. Well anyway, this party was the perfect ending of a wonderful time the class of ’61 shall always remember. 12

Class History The time — September ’57, the place — room 307. There we were, all 66 members constituting the Freshman Class, ready and raring to proceed with our first class meeting at which we elected Joseph Fiedler, president; Richard Her og, vice-president: Patricia Verity, secretary; and Sandra Thomas, treasurer. The first (and only) thing on the agenda was the St. Patrick’s Dance. With much effort and the aid of our class advisor, Mr. Manwaring, “Lep- rechaun’s Hop” proved to be a huge success in spite of the cold weather outside. The place was the same but it was a year later. We were moving up in the world. Now as Sopho- mores, we attained a higher rank. Starting the year off with a bang, we elected the following officers; Karen Dean, president; Joseph Fiedler, vice- president; Terry Bubb, secretary; Valerie Unander, treasurer. Our goal — money. We reached our goal too. The two dances we sponsored, “Angels’ Cotil- lion” and “April Showers” were financial successes. Also those “little dogs” we sold really boosted our treasury. We soon came to be known as “those rich Sophomores” to the immense satisfaction of our class advisor. Well there we were — Juniors! What a wonderful feeling. As accomplished upperclassmen, we started the ball rolling once again and elected the following competent officers; Harry Mulhall, president; Peter Lieblein, vice-president; Sarah Postwaile, secretary and Paul Jensen, treasurer. It was a terrifically busy year what with our two memorable dances, “Sweet- heart’s Ball” and “Witchcraft,” the selection of class rings (a round military ring with an entirely new type of crest) and oh yes, the prom. “Stairway to the Stars” did not contribute to the financial resources of the class but it was considered to be a great social success. Before we knew it, that last and most important year had finally rolled around. We Seniors dug into our final year with zest and vigor and at the first class meeting of the year, we chose' the following officers: Harry Mulhall, president; Peter Lieblein, vice-president; Sarah Postwaite, secretary; and Val- erie Unander, treasurer. With Washington in mind, we went all out on our magazine drive, selling more magazines than any other class in the history of the school. The first major event of the year was the Sen- ior Play. Under the excellent supervision of Mr. Jaschob, we presented “Father’s Been to Mars,” a hilarious comedy with Tony Mazzaferro playing the leading role. For the tremendous task of editing the yearbook, we chose two very capable students, Lou Berdinka and Paul Jensen. Much thanks is owed to them and Mr. Gildersleeve, their advisor. The class trip to Washington and the prom passed much too quickly and before long, graduation, our final goal, was over.
