Bauer A. Begley T. Bubb J. Gloria M. Laub B. Staron H. Staples B. Harroun Class History The time — September ’57, the place — room 307. There we were, all 66 members constituting the Freshman Class, ready and raring to proceed with our first class meeting at which we elected Joseph Fiedler, president; Richard Her og, vice-president: Patricia Verity, secretary; and Sandra Thomas, treasurer. The first (and only) thing on the agenda was the St. Patrick’s Dance. With much effort and the aid of our class advisor, Mr. Manwaring, “Lep- rechaun’s Hop” proved to be a huge success in spite of the cold weather outside. The place was the same but it was a year later. We were moving up in the world. Now as Sopho- mores, we attained a higher rank. Starting the year off with a bang, we elected the following officers; Karen Dean, president; Joseph Fiedler, vice- president; Terry Bubb, secretary; Valerie Unander, treasurer. Our goal — money. We reached our goal too. The two dances we sponsored, “Angels’ Cotil- lion” and “April Showers” were financial successes. Also those “little dogs” we sold really boosted our treasury. We soon came to be known as “those rich Sophomores” to the immense satisfaction of our class advisor. Well there we were — Juniors! What a wonderful feeling. As accomplished upperclassmen, we started the ball rolling once again and elected the following competent officers; Harry Mulhall, president; Peter Lieblein, vice-president; Sarah Postwaile, secretary and Paul Jensen, treasurer. It was a terrifically busy year what with our two memorable dances, “Sweet- heart’s Ball” and “Witchcraft,” the selection of class rings (a round military ring with an entirely new type of crest) and oh yes, the prom. “Stairway to the Stars” did not contribute to the financial resources of the class but it was considered to be a great social success. Before we knew it, that last and most important year had finally rolled around. We Seniors dug into our final year with zest and vigor and at the first class meeting of the year, we chose' the following officers: Harry Mulhall, president; Peter Lieblein, vice-president; Sarah Postwaite, secretary; and Val- erie Unander, treasurer. With Washington in mind, we went all out on our magazine drive, selling more magazines than any other class in the history of the school. The first major event of the year was the Sen- ior Play. Under the excellent supervision of Mr. Jaschob, we presented “Father’s Been to Mars,” a hilarious comedy with Tony Mazzaferro playing the leading role. For the tremendous task of editing the yearbook, we chose two very capable students, Lou Berdinka and Paul Jensen. Much thanks is owed to them and Mr. Gildersleeve, their advisor. The class trip to Washington and the prom passed much too quickly and before long, graduation, our final goal, was over. Senior “Halsey, now don’t forget to ring the telephone! Remem- ber what happened at dress rehearsal? ... I know I'll for- get my lines, I just know I will! . . . Where’s my garden trowel? . . Becky, did the flowers come yet?. . . Ooh! My makeup’s running! . . . Shut up and get on stage!! ’ It was the night of December 9, 1960, when the Class of ’61 presented the incomparable hit, “Father’s Been To Mars,” a comedy in three acts. Afer six hard weeks of basic training under the able direction of Mr. Jaschob. (and with a few helpful hints from Cecil B. DeKaplan, I might add) this production proved to be very successful. Tony Mazzaferro, who skillfully portrayed the riotous Captain Galaxy, and the rest of the cast are to be com- mended for their excellent acting. The entire class can pat themselves on the back for a job well done. All the hard work on the scenery and costumes helped to make this a most memorable play. However, there were some trying mo- ments. When Zizi’s cigarette fell behind the table, everyone backstage was visualizing the Greenport Fire Department desperately trying to save the auditorium. And who can forget the time the door wouldn’t open! With the closing of the play, the spry seniors journeyed to June Raymond’s house in East Marion where a most memorable (and I mean memorable) party was held. There, in appreciation for their trying efforts, the class presented June and Maury with two most useful gifts?? Into the wee hours of the morning, the seniors danced and sang until Mr. Raymond could no longer stand it and threw everyone out. Well anyway, this party was the perfect ending of a wonderful time the class of ’61 shall always remember. 12 Play CAST Larry Gibson ........................ Juniors The Class of 1962 began their Junior year with a good start. At their class officers’ elections they chose the following officers: David Ott, president; Fred Axelson, vice-president; Adrienne Moskovey, secre- tary; Wendy Bie, treasurer. The Student Council rep- resentatives selected were Melania Lakowitz and Alan Horton. 1960’s Juniors became the only class in Green port’s history to choose a class ring style that would be the permanent Greenport School Ring. The Juniors se- lected a military ring, one side to bear the image of a clipper ship, the other a replica of the school building. The rings are of gold with a plain stone. 1960 has been a good year financially for the class of '62. The Junior’s first endeavor was a car wash at Hubbard’s gas station. After long hours of flying soap suds and water-soaked cufTs, pant legs and hair, the KNEELING: C. Stubbing . I). Grigonis. FIRST ROW: G. Smith, D. Walker, G. Freeman, G. Schaiblc. A. Katz, D. The Halloween Dance was met with overwhelming approval by the student body. This was followed by the Valentine Dance. The height of the year’s social whirl was of course, the successful Junior-Senior Prom. The Juniors had high hopes of retaining the crown at the Annual Quiz Show. This year the representa- tives were again David Ott and Wendy Bie. Many Juniors have participated in the school's extra-curricular activities. The Juniors were well rep- resented in football, basketball, baseball and track. Also, many were members of the chorus and band. The Class of 1962 eagerly awaits their Senior year. They hojx to combine scholastic ability with physi- cal adeptness and become a class that will contri- bute something to Greenport High School. Horton, C. Ciochetto, Mr. Mclndoe, L. Reiter. Oystermen finished the 1960 football season with their fifth consecutive Championship, suffering their only loss to a hard playing team from Southampton, which ended a streak of 23 unde- feated league games. Grecnport allowed its opponents to score in only 3 of the 8 games played. Also, G.H.S. has only been defeated twice in the last 35 league games. Although there was a loss of 12 letter-men from last year’s squad, there was a good supply of experienced ballplayers to fill the gaps. At quarterback was John Costello, who proved to be not only a pin-point passer, but a hard runner. At halfback the fans saw Dave Corazzini and Warren Mitchell, both of whom did a lot of ball handling this year. Harry Mulhall held down the fullback position, another very capable player. On the line, Henry Ship and Dick Herzog played end. At tackle were Pete Lieblein and Tom Sypher, two of the biggest men on the team. Bob Foster and Ron DeBlasio were very strong at guards. Finally, at center, one of the smallest but mightiest men on the team, “Red Corazzini. On defense there were many others who made the difference between winning and losing. Among these were Jim Snead, Joe Reiter, Gars' Jackson, Dave Miller. Curt Martin, Sandy Hulsc, Halsey Tuthill, Richard Dors and John Pederson. Now you have met the backbone of the 1960 team. Altogether, there were 42 boys on the G.H.S. football squad this year, a fine turnout for a school of this size. Coach Jackson and his assistants, Mr. Vindigni and Mr. Manwaring. spent long hours working with the boys to produce a championship team, a great accomplishment for the smallest school on Long Island which participates in football. This year the Oystermen were co-champ, sharing the honor with Southampton and Half Hollow Hills. Many of the players were recognized by leading newspapers. Among those honored were Ron DeBlasio. John Costello, Red Corazzini, Pete Lieblein. I om Sypher and Dave Corazzini. To wind up the season there was the annual banquet at Porky’s Restaurant where awards were given, and sjx’eches were made. This event was enjoyed by all. Basketball Coach Wells and co-captains Reggie Wilson and John Costello. Suffering a loss of four key men from the 1959-60 squad, the G.H.S. basketball team, under the supervision of Coach Wells, entered the 1960-61 season with a tremendous handicap. After winning seven out of the first ten games, the burden was increased by the additional loss of senior John Costello, (foot injury) and junior Dave Miller (operation), two valuable men, who not only constituted the height of the team, but were active scoring threats. With them out of play, the rebounding was limited. The most highly praised ballplayer of the season was Reggie Wilson, a Senior, who scored 238 points and averaged 14 points per game. Others who were active on the varsity squad were Warren Mitch- ell, Charles Ciochetto. Ulysses Edwards and Jim Snead, all very able players. The Junior Varsity club had a very good year, winning 12 games and losing 3. It was sparked by Gary Jackson, averag- ing 14 points per game. Others who de- serve recognition were Jimmy Jones, Billy Foster, Robert LaBad and Barry Webb. Each of these boys proved to be good ma- terial with which to compose next year’s varsity squad. 36 Scores Grcenport 67 Mercy High School 32 Greenport 42 Shelter Island 39 Greenport 41 Easthampton 37 Greenport 41 Center Moriches 42 Greenport 55 Sag Harbor 54 Greenport 51 Shelter Island 43 Greenport 73 .Southampton 52 Greenport 51 Southold 5 Greenport 50 Westhampton 57 Greenport 45 Mattituck 75 Greenport 44 Bridgehampton 65 Greenport 57 Sag Harbor 77 Greenport 53 Center Moriches 56 Greenport 46 Easthampton 48 Greenport 39 Southampton 56 Greenport 43 Westhampton 57 Greenport 48 Southold 62 Greenport 40 Mattituck 84 JUNIOR VARSITY: FIRST ROW: B Webb, J. This years baseball team began the season with inspiring memories of the 1960 games, when Coach Manwaring did a fine job of leading the boys on to the first County Championship in the history of the school. That team was centered around pitcher John Costello, who had a tremen- dous season with a record of 10 wins, 2 losses, a no-hitter and an average of 10 strikeouts per game. John proved himself to be one of the finest hurlers in the county. In the 1961 season, Coach Manwaring had nearly the same team, with only Dome Jackson, Jr. missing. Back for their final campaign were Costello, Dick Her og at first base, Henry Ship at second, and Ray Cowan at third. Others who were active this year were Curt Martin, star catcher and fine hitter, Vernon Jacobs, Jim Snead, Joe Reiter, Gary Jackson and Steve Rutkowski. FIRST ROW. J. Jones, U. Edwards, F. Dejesus. In addition, the boys won the East End and County Championships for the third time in four years. John Kramer again proved his superior abil- ity by setting a New York State record in a meet held at West Point. Also, Carl Utz took the Suffolk County Championship in the pole vault. Furthermore, the squad copped the Suf- folk County Mile Relay, setting a new record in this event. The 440 Relay Championship was attained by Charles Boldin, Warren Mitchell, Reggie Wilson and Irving Toliver. Lacking 15 members of this championship team. Mr. Sartor I he members of the Greenport High School Band looked forward to beginning the year with Mr. Sartors return from the army. Mr. Sartor used his army training to prepare the band for the half- time shows during the football season. The pre- cision marches were a new challenge to the band and after much practice were skillfully executed. Almost before the excitement of the football season faded away and with the onset of Christ- mas in the not too distant future, the band set- tled down to some serious rehearsing for the Christ- mas Concert. The applause at the end of the per- formance was a welcome reward for the many hours spent in preparation. The winter season continued 46 Band with the presentation of the March of Dimes Bene- fit in January, and then the Washington’s Birth- day Parade in February. Next came a change of tern} when several members of the band were chosen to participate in the Annual North Fork Festival. Immediately following the North Fork Festival, preparations be- gan to present the Annual Spring Concert. On May 30 the band played at the Memorial Day observance ceremonies. And as the year came to an end, the band, with many of its members in the senior class of 1961, played for their fellow members for the last time. SEATED: D. Chorus Mr Williams This year, under the spirited direction of Mr. Walter Williams, the Greenport High School 110 voice Girls’ Senior Chorus was the largest ever. The first project of the year was the Christmas Concert, a musically memorable evening. The girls sang “The Lord is my Light,” “1 he Birthday of a King,’’and “O Bone Jesu. After the Girls’ Senior Chorus had sung “If I Loved You” in the March of Dimes Benefit pro- gram which was held in the latter part of January, they commenced to work on their spring music for the annual event of the year, the May Concert. This year’s concert was greater than it had ever been. It was a warm and joyous experience for all who participated. The Senior Mixed and Girls Choruses were proud of eight of their members, Sarah Postwaite, Kay Riley, Lorna LaBad. Lee Ellen Fox. Donald Chattaway, Alan Horton. Allen Rackett and George Vail who participated in the Suffolk Country All State Sectional Chorus held in Huntington last fall. The chorus was delighted to have Sarah Post- waite attend the Music Educators’ National Con- ference Eastern All Division Chorus which was held in Washington. D.C., from January 13, to 16. The chorus consisted of 414 students from 12 east- ern states. It is hoped that all chorus members will be able to enjoy even more rewarding musical ex- periences. NYSSMA SEATED: L. E. Fox, L.
