Carole Grathwohl was elected secretary, and Joe Wells, treasurer as they were during all four years of high school. Our main project of that first exciting year was a St. Patrick's dance, Rock Around the Shamrock, which, regardless of the raging blizzard, was a howling success. As sophomores we elected Edwina Green, President, and John Gloria, Vice- President. Since our Christmas dance Silver Bells, was such a huge success, we gave another dance, Butterfly, in the Spring of the year. In our Junior year we really began to buckle down to work towards our fu- ture Senior trip. Our two new officers were James Salminen, President, and John Gloria, Vice-President. Our first big project of the year was to select our class rings. In February we gave a very successful Valentine's dance, and for the first time our Junior Class took the full responsibility for giving the Prom. The Prom, Around the World in 80 days, was very enjoyable and proved to be an asset to our finances. To put the finishing touch to our Junior year, we enjoyed the Jr.-Sr. picnic. In our final year at G.H.S. we seniors went on to bigger and better things. We started off with our magazine campaign in the first week of school and worked very hard on it. Our officers for this year were James Salminen, Presi- dent, and George Bravakos, Vice-President. Mr. Deutschmann again became our class advisor, as he had been for the three previous years,- Miss Mahoney was his able assistant. Our next endeavor as seniors was the presentation of our Senior Play Archie Andrews. With Mr. Clark directing and Mr. Jaschob producing, the play was very successful. From that we proceeded onward to the Yearbook with Athena Moskovey and Mary Ruth Butler, co-editors, and Mr. Gildersleeve, advisor. Finally Spring came and we set out for Washington, all agreeing that all the hard work we had put in was not in vain. Soon Prom time came, in which we aided the juniors by supplying the music, and finally, the Jr.-Sr. picnic and graduation, thus terminating four happy years at Green- port High School. 11 YOU MUST HAVE BEEN TOP TO BOTTOM, left to right: A. Moskovey, M. Bishop, Y. Walker, H. Thornhill, G. Bravakos, T. Harman, P. Corazzini, C. Pilles, K. Cottral, G. Sledjeski, H. Wernikowski, B. Foster, M. R. Butler, M. A. Droskoski, C. Grushkin. A BEAUTIFUL BABY Se tio% VCay It was Saturday, November 22, at 8:00 P.M. The place — backstage in the Greenport High School Auditorium. Only 15 minutes left before the curtain would open on the last performance of our senior play, Archie Andrews. After many rehearsals and two performances, we finally felt like veteran actors, but even veteran actors get a little stage fright before a performance. As we nervously paced in the wings, we looked back on the six hectic but hilarious weeks of rehearsal. We could see again all of our problems: the way we stumbled around the stage at first — the first time we tried all three acts without scripts — the doorbells that didn't ring at the right times — the same scene we could never get right, and Mr. Clark saying, Speak to the clock! — Face the audience! — Stay in character!!! This reminiscing helped to pass the time, and suddenly, it was 8:15, and we were on! Almost before we realized, it was all over except for the relieved laughter, the crowded make-up room, and the party. Now everything is over, and the only thing we have left is the memories. But our class can always look back with pride on Archie Andrews. Archie ................................. Elwood Rowe Martha ................................ Jackson, Vice-Pres.; Donna Foster, Sec. and Zelek M. Kaplan, Treas. Their Student Council representatives were Lucille Tuthill, Dave Vail, and Audrey Klipp. A smash hit Halloween Dance, Black Magic, was the juniors' first undertaking. When the class rings (a ship set on its stone) arrived in January, everyone was highly pleased. The Valentine Dance, Coronary Beat, was a happy occasion for all concerned. When June arrived, all the juniors helped to make the Prom the huge success that it was. With the aid of talented juniors, G.H.S. won its third straight football championship. During the year, many juniors participated in athletic activities. Many juniors also were members of the band and chorus. Having completed their third year, the Class of 1960 look forward to their last year in high school with hopes that their accomplishments as seniors will make for pleasant memories in the future. The Greenport High School Band, under the direction of Mr. Robert Williams, began its busy year by drilling for half-time shows for the home football games and sharing in the color and excitement of another championship drive. In October it was honored by playing at the dedica- tory game of William Floyd High School at Mastic on the opening of their new field. The band's first winter endeavor was the beautiful Christ- mas Concert, followed by the March of Dimes Benefit in January. The Washington's Birthday Parade in the village of Greenport closed the winter season. With the coming of spring came the Annual North Fork Festival with select members of the Greenport High School Band participating. Frenzied preparations followed for the Annual May Concert, another memorable musical occasion. On May 30 the band played at the Memorial Day ob- servance ceremonies. And as the Class of '59 filed onto the stage for commencement in June, the band played for them the last time, thus closing a successful year of musical achievement. A new musical group made their debut at Greenport High this year to the delight of all students. The Coeds, a dance band formed by four musically talented students, played at a number of school dances and other affairs. Their lively, smooth artistry was a highlight of the season. 37 SENIOR CHORUS SEATED: A. Moskovey, Sec.; C. Tuthill, Trees.; STANDING: J. Salminen, Pres.; H. Thornhill, Vice-Pres. 4(C-State L. Among the many new voices heard were the Junior High boys filling out the tenor and bass sections of the chorus. The very successful Christmas Concert was the first project of the year. Two numbers in that performance were sung by an impressive 280 voice chorus, massed from the Senior Chorus, Junior Chorus, and Sixth Grade Chorus. Soon after the March of Dimes Benefit, in which the girls of Senior Chorus sang, the chorus began to work on selections for the musical event of the year, the Annual May Concert. This year's concert was an even bigger success than in previous years and proved a rewarding experience for all who participated. The chorus was particularly proud of four of its members, Ann Jensen, Jim Salminen, Donna Foster, and Harry Geehreng, when all qualified for the Suffolk County All State Sectional Chorus at Port Jefferson in the fall. These and four others as a double quartet attended the New Paltz Choral Clinic in March with Mr. Williams. It is hoped in time that other chorus students will be able to enjoy such rewarding musical experiences. 39 I Vjuptettfi KNEELING: N. Dzenkowski, C. Miller, J. Benko, N. Kaufer, Mr. Deutschmann, D. Sparked by the superb passing of Harry Breese and the spectacular playing of Carl Glue-fingers Utz, and Dorrie Jackson, Jr., Greenport High captured the A-3 League Football Championship for the third straight year. The rest of the first team consisted of Dave Cervone, Jerry Martocchia, Connie Vloutely, Tim Hudson, J. Wydur, J. Gloria, Fred Terry, and Mike Kaplan. In addition to the championship, the Greenport players were bestowed with other honors. Dave and Carl made first string on the Suffolk County All Star Team. Dave, Carl, Harry, John W., John G., Jerry and Tim became members of the League All Stars, sponsored by News- day and Long Island Press. At the end of the sea- son, co-captains John Gloria, Dave Cervone, and Jerry Martocchia accepted a trophy from Rutgers University for being the outstanding team in Suffolk County. An interesting sideline is the fact that the Porters main- tained a thirty point average for all the games this season, probably the best average in the history of the school. Carl's individual total of seventy-five points earned him the Suffolk County Scoring Title. To celebrate the end of another successful year, the football team enjoyed a banquet at Porky's Restaurant. At this time Coach Dorrie Jackson with his able assistants, coaches Manwaring and Vindigni, received awards for their excellent coaching which enabled us to be triumphant once again. With Jack Skrezec and Porky Howard gone, Coach relied heavily on John Wydur, Glenn Jackson, Harry Breese, Carl Utz and Jim Salminen. Stepping up from last year's J.V. team were Tim Hudson, Reggie Wilson, Roger Foster and Irv Tolliver, the latter, however, soon sidelined by an appendicitis opera- tion. Drive and great teamwork rocketed G.H.S. to a very respectable second place in the league and an excellent record of 14 wins and 4 losses. Statistics show our team averaged 66 points a game while holding the opposition to 50. Although relatively inexperienced the J.V. showed great pep and will to win by chalking up a record of 11 wins and 3 losses. The team was paced by Curt Martin, Dave Miller, Ulysses Edwards, John Costello and Charles Boldin and backed by a good bench — Warren Mitchell, Charles Ciochetto, Bill Foster, Jim Mallett, Barry Webb, Allie Hansen and Ron De Blasio. In view of this upcoming J.V. team, Greenport's basketball future is a pleasant prospect. At a very impressive ceremony on March 26, 1959, students from the Junior and Senior Classes were in- ducted into the Greenport Chapter of the National Honor Society. John Gloria, Edwina Green, Athena Moskovey, James Salminen, Joseph Wells, and Cariotta Wilsen were the members selected for the Honor Society in their Junior Year. These students were chosen by the high school teachers on the basis of excellence of character, scholarship, leader- ship, and service. Eligibility was also restricted to students who had a scholastic average of eighty-five or over for their high school careers. Student ou tcii SEATED AT TABLE, left to right: A. Moskovey, Pres.; A. A big, shiny red apple and an appropriate poem greeted the teachers of G.H.S. on the morning of February 13- compliments of the Student Council — in recognition of Teacher Appreciation Day. A $100 scholarship for the alternate of the Lillian Ging Memorial Scholarship Fund, the sale of Greenport sweatshirts and buttons, marshals, and a dance were some of the activities that kept this year's Student Council busy. Under the leadership of Athena Moskovey, Pres.; Ann Jensen, Vice-Pres.,- Lucille Tuthill, Sec.; Anita Pfluger, Treas.; and Mrs. Sylvia Hogan, advisor, the G.S.C. also participated actively in the Eastern Suffolk Association of Student Councils. This year upon Greenport's suggestion the E.S.A.S.C. will send a rep- resentative to Syracuse University for Student Council Leadership Training. It is hoped that the Student Council will continue to give active service to the student body. 60 'T tn. (fcC ent 7%, z t£en Mr. Gilbert M. Banker, principal of our school for the past five years and an educator in New York State for thirty-eight years, will be leaving us in August. While Mr. Banker served as our principal, considerable progress has been made in our school. Improvements such as the paint- ing done last summer, the pur- chasing of new desks, and the installing of new lighting have made life here much more pleas- ant. More important than these physical improvements is the im- provement in the conduct of the students. Because Mr. Banker has taken a sincere interest in the students and their activities, they have liked and admired him. In short, we are all very grateful to Mr. Banker for everything he has done for us. We wish him the best of luck in his new ap- pointment as Assistant Professor of Education in the Social Sci- ence Department of Rider Col- lege at Trenton, New Jersey. 61 7( eU We the class of 1959, before we take off for the vast unknown, do hereby leave all our most prized and cherished possessions to the underclassmen herein named who will remain for more happy years at G.
