Subjects which challenged most of their minds were American History and English III while a few brave Iuniors chose Chemistry. After four hard months of work, the class en- joyed a sleigh ride party. Shortly after the turn of the new year, Iuniors went around flashing their new rings. Thirteen Iuniors became assistant editors in pro- ducing the 1953 TIGER TALES. Many were sur- prised in the many endless but fascinating hours spent in this project. The important date for all Iuniors was the night they entertained the Royal Seniors. Holiday Inn was the theme of this year's prom. ' Center Guard Tackle End RODGER BRINEY DEAN LEUTHAUSER MIKE MCDERMOTT GEORGE KIRKLAND Guard BOB RUBY A very determined Tiger squad, play- ing on their opponent's field gave the Greenfield fans one of the biggest thrills of the seuson when they jolted a much favored Creston team 14-13. The Tiger star of the game was Bob Hoepner who raced 64 yards for a touchdown. The second contest of the season saw a strong Redfield team rip the Tiger line to gain a 13-27 advantage. Outstanding of- fensive player was again Bob Hoepner, with Leuthauser and Ruth doing a fine job of defensive work. Traveling to Winterset the Tigers suffered a disheartening defeat at the hands of the Huskies. The 27-0 score was- n't as bad as it sounds, since Hoepner and Leuthauser turned in outstanding perfor- mances. Ruth to Musmaker passes were a great asset to the Tiger squad. Greenfield found Guthrie Center a hard fighting outfit, and another disap- pointing defeat went down in the books. Although at a disadvantage due to Hoep- ner's absence in the backfield, our im- proved passing was not equal to that of the fighting hosts. Coach Chamber,s boys rolled past Coon Rapids before a large Homecoming crowd. The 32-0 victory seemed pretty good after a 3 game losing streak. Robert's punting proved valuable however, the Tigers suffered a major loss, when Gary Newton broke his wrist. On the Tiger's home field, Stuart managed to break through all defences and handed us a 26-13 defeat. Bob Hoep- ner scored for the losers and Robert's pass to Musmaker, provided the other Greenfield score. The long journey to Audubon to help observe their homecoming was another discouragement to the squad. The team played a nice game, but soon learned they were fighting a fine team with plenty of knowhow. Playing host to the Lenox eleven was a pleasure to the Tigers since they edged their visitors by a 13-6 score. The annual meeting with the Orient Bulldogs closed the football season with a big bang. One of the best performances of the season by the Tigers, who were supposed to be the under dogs, resulted in a 18-13 victory. This left the players, their coach and the fans with a fine feeling. BASKETBALL Win County and Sectional Titles HEAD COACH Bob Norris Shortly after the last football game, twenty-five potential basketball players reported to Coach Norris for the 1952-1953 cage season. Included in the group were six letterwinners: Rodger Briney, Bo Combs, Harold Dwyer, Bob Hoepner, and co-captains Clark Roberts, and Wendell Winn. The other men who started the season were: K. Anderson, F. Cole, Geo. Kirkland, T. Bochart, L. Calkins, F. Iohnson, D. Leuthauser, H. Lisk, D. Lundy, P. Musmaker, D. New- bury, B. Ruby, El Sullivan, D. Elliott, P. Holliday, C. Iensen, F. Murphy, G. Newton, and L. Ruth. By the time the first game rolled around, Coach Norris had molded toget- her a smooth running combination which scored an easy victory over the Redfield quintet. Sparked by Wendy Winn's twenty-nine points, the scrappy Tigermen gave the fans a real thrill and prospects for the future games were KNEELING: B. Hoepner, R. Briney, H Dwyer. W. Winn. C. Roberts. As the season progressed the team improved with each game and by the time county tournament time arrived, our boys became the favorites in the race for the trophy. The bye they drew in the first round of play gave the team a chance to rest up or the hard fight against Richland in the semi-finals. That game, as it had promised to be, was a thriller. A fine Richland team was beaten by the slim margin of nine points. The Tigers advanced to the finals where they defeated the Orient five to win the coveted honors and become the Adair County Champs of 1953. After the county tournament the Tigers lost four of their five games and went into the Sectional Tournament with a ten and ten record. In the first round of the sectionals they rolled over Murray 79 to 42, but the big task was defeating powerful Creston in the finals, which they did, 56 to 53 to avenge an earlier defeat by the Panthers. If by some chance you stuck your head in the gym door last spring and were nearly beheaded by a baseball, you could be sure Coach Norris was teaching his squad the fundamentals of the sport. The number of returning lettermen was small, but the job, though tough, was capably handled. When spring officially arrived and the ball diamond lost its last layer of snow, the fellows really went to work in earnest. The seven games of the season were played with neighboring towns. On the schedule last year were Afton, Bridgewater, Fontanelle, Orient, and Richland. Despite the fact that the season record shows six games lost to one won, we are still proud of the players be- cause of the effort displayed during the season. With Dean Beaman, Frank Cole, George Kirkland, Dean Leuthauser, Harold Lisk, and Dan Newbury returning for this season we have high hopes for a better year. Wrestling is a sport of the individual and his own ability, stature and mental power. The matmen of Greenfield were very fortunate when the school purchased a 24 foot square wrestling mat fully equipped with plastic cover, new wrestling tights, trunks and knee pads. A new heating system was installed in the football room where wrestling workouts were held each night. In the first year ot wrestling, starting with 23 inexperienced men, the squad had a very satisfactory season winning three of nine dual meets. As in previous years the G-Club sold popcorn at the football and basket- ball gain es. They took up a collection for the March of Dimes during the county tournament. Each spring the club members eagerly await their yearly picnic, consisting of fried chicken, baked beans, potato salad, milk, and homemade ice cream. This amusing event took place on November 20 with the in- itiation of twelve new members into the club. The traditional secret initiation was held the night before. In addition to the sweat shirts and skirts they also had to wear long underwear overshoes on backwards a big G on one cheek and a sign on the front and back of them. The one on their back was to announce the G-Club All High School Party on November 22. - s ,,- X 1 x 5. I fl wi A 's . S 5 xW Q 3 C ' . Zi h e Yn - . Helping Hands About School The people behind the scenes whom you do not always see are the hot lunch cooks, janitors and bus drivers. The students are privileged to have a hot lunch program which runs from late November to April. lt is sponsored by the home economics department. The fine appearance of the school building and grounds is due to the hard work oi Mr. Reynolds and Mr. Wallace, who have to spend their summer vacation cleaning, sanding floors, polishing windows, seal- ing the gym and general carpentry work. l .jx by s---1 'Q N-.,,, ,, vt .4 G A A Formal 1' UPPER LEFT Muse Schakel checks the Snowmen ueed to de 86 '1 QPVIHQ corcxte the qym walls for the C- A A Formal UPPER RIGHT Kay Kapter hnrshes her slerqhrldmq scene on the curtaln whlle Betty G and Betty C complete the Snowmen LOWER LEFT lt took a lot of Stars to nuke the words Wmter Wonderland QCOPCI Inq Darlene, Thelma and Betty are servinq refreshments AQ S?
