On the 3rd of September 1n 1945 Green field High School was blessed with fifty alert tender green freshmen who were more confused than either their new teach ers or their upper classmates Confus ion is a minor word compared to the bed lam that occurred in the study hall try ing to fmd seats and in the hallways as we were learmng our way about the school house Our gracious upper classmen the seniors gave us about two weeks to get our bearings then at the end of that time they uttered their ultimatum On the following morning each frosh was to bow to every senior he met through out the day Freshmen boys were to dress like girls and the girls were to dress as boys Each was to carry his books to and from class in a milk pail This hurt our pride to some extent but nothing compared to the roughmg they gave us at our initiation party held the following evening We did however manage to forget and forgive them they served us delicious refreshments and informed us that, as far as they were concerned we were genulne high school material A freshmen we were allowed to Join any activity that we wanted to namely G A A Y Teens H1 Y G Club band and vocal music Time passed quickly and soon another school year confronted us As we filed into our classes as sophomores we found two or three mxssmg from our ranks one because of illness, some had moved away and others were bitten by the love bug We still had a nice group, however Some of the boys took part in baseball and received letters for their achieve ments Other boys and girls we re chosen to represent our class on the school paper the Black and Gold That year rolled along at a swift pace and as we neared the end, the Junior class chose sxxteen of us to serve at their annual Jumor Senior Banquet, thus helping to prepare us for the coming year Our junior year followed and as usual some of the familiar faces were missing while several new names dotted the class roll We really were busy getting our class officers elected and also electing officers for various other activities It was durtng this year that we gave our class play Jumor Miss to rnake funds for the Junior Senior Banquet Each and everyone of us contributed in some way to make this a success A new activity was organized during our Junior year the Dee A s in which some of our class took an active part As spring drew near so did banquet date Much credit is given our sponsor Miss Leona Thompson for her ve ry capable management and toler ance toward her committees who worked with her We were very proud of our banquet and received many compliments for our efforts Another year was com ward to our senior year As we sped into our places on the first morning of our last year we sadly found only forty glowing faces left in our semor class Having many things to do we busily hustled here and the re It was our duty to initiate the 1948 freshmen and w did this very convincingly to them TV en came rurnors about having an annual and we as Semors of 1949 are very proud to be the sponsor of it We in our class all intend to make a place for ourselves in this world but we pride ourselves in having a member who was awarded a membership certificate in the Press Col ummsts of Iowa because of her journal istic ability There are eight athletical ly minded boys in our class some of whom are lette rmen in football basketball, baseball and track Three girls have letters in G A A other students in our class have received band awards Many others will receive awards granted at the year s end I ' - . N, F, , 50, , I think there is unanimous agreement in the junior class that we have had two outstanding events in our pa st year, namely the Junior Class Play and the Jun- ior-Senior Banquet. Our class play was a three-act comedy called Strictly Formal . What with the efficient directing of Miss Bryant, our drama coach, and the co-operation of cast and production crews, we were able to enjoy a successful climax to all the hard work and hours of practice we had put into this, our first real triumph For weeks after this performance the actors strutted around like Bergman and Boyer or should I say, Hope and Hutton? Then we moved on to our next well deserved success, the Jumor Senior Ban quet As usual, just a few days before the scheduled occasion, we all began scurry ing around, trying to accomplish everything in record time Everyone worked un til finally about one hour before the seniors were to arrive we placed our stamp of approval on it Our decorating scheme had worked out well the program was a success, the food was delicious, the dancing was divine everything was perfect The hardest part of all our work was to greet the honored seniors serenely and when they expressed their thanks to merely say that it wasn t work at all just pure enjoyment LAHEY LANE R LORENZE LOW DEN MENSING MITCHELL PIPER PRICE W RAY RUSSLL RUSSELL SACKETT SCHNEIDER SCHRADER J SCHW ARTZ SPEED SPENCER STOWELL UNGER W ALLACE D WAMBOLD WEHRLI WEINHEILAER ' it .Q . Most of the team was composed of new inexperienced men, but having good potentialities. The Tigers opened the 1948 football season on the home field, beating Lenox 7-0. The score remained 0-O until the third quarter, when Rich Hofmann threw a pass to Mil- lard Goodell for the only tal- ly. The next game with Corn- ing was one of the hardest fought battles of the season. Both teams threw up good defensive plays and as a re- sult, neither was able to score. Greenfield was in Corning's territory most of the game but could not get up enough punch to cross the markers. Greenfield received its first defeat at the hands of Creston. When the final gun was sounded, Greenfield was on the short end of a 44-0 score. Beside losing the game, we also lost the services of two starting players, early in the quarter. Dick Brown received a leg injury and Bill Lamb, a broken bone in his hand. These injuries retired them from action for three weeks. Running into a determined Winterset eleven, Greenfield again went down fighting. Bill Green, a regular, did not start the game because of a leg injury received in practice earlier in the week, and Clare Jensen, another mainstay, was injured early in the game. Without the services of four regulars, Greenfield still put up a good battle, but was downed 45-0. A much improved Green- field team traveled to Guthrie Center the following week, but the Guthrie Center Ti- gers proved too much for us and won Z4-0. Our next game was at home, the first one out of four starts. Looking much better than the previous week, the Tigers fought stubbornly Lettermen who were absent when the pictures were taken: DON KING - Quarterback. A good blocker. Dean Piper gave the fans a thrill, when he returned a punt from his own twenty- one yard line to Atlantic's forty-five. The score at the end was Atlantic 19, Greenfield 7. To win the next game, Homecoming, against Stuart, was a must . The weather proved quite a handicap. lt rained constantly from the time the game started until the final minute ticked away, thus prohibiting the ride of the queen, Alberta Weber, and her attendants Jane South, and Phyllis Donnellan around the field at half-time. All in all, however, it was a suc- cessful game with Greenfield winning, Z8-7. In a thrilling climax on November ll, the Tigers downed Orient, a long time rival, 13-7. This marked the final gam e for G reenfield High School and also for ll senior squad members. The coaches who have done so much for the squad, and the squad, themselves, should be congratulated for their fine perforrnances this season. WAYNE WALLACE - Guard.
