We have been told that we do not have the inclination, desire, nor ability for development, progress, or work. As members of this so-called defeated group of society, we students of Greencastle High School would like to present an altogether different view of the youth of today. ln our school system we have witnessed ex- pansion through an increased enrollment, new fac- ulty members, new courses, and new textbooks from which to study new theories and ideas. Our athletic, club, social and academic programs have been re- vised and reorganized to function more efficiently. Finally, we have watched the growth of an idea be- come the realization of a dream in the building of our new school. We point with pride to our student sponsored community projects, to individual and group achievements and awards, to an increased interest in continuing our education and training in the future. Indeed, these are not the marks of a beaten generation, they are signs of progress and positive indications that. . . It is the jokes in the halls between classes, the fads each year brings. lt is the rush down the new one-way stairs, the crush around the lockers. This year, in addition, it is saying good-by to this building and wat- ching the progress of the new one. Today, in the furor of the Sputniks and Atlases, formal education is being empha- sized, but we can't forget that part of our personalities that is developed in the five- minute interludes between classes, at noon hours, and after school. S. were privileged to have many interesting convocations. Commemorating a special occasion dear to the hearts of Hoosiers, Dr. Frank Travis, retired Methodist minister, gave an account of the life of Abraham Lincoln. This program marked the l5Oth anniversary of Lincoln's birth. A nation wide occurrence is Youth Week. This year we were fortunate in having Rosa Page Welsh, a famous concert singer from Chicago, as our speaker. In a series of three convos, Mrs. Welsh gave talks on the teen-ager of today and his relations with God. A variety of other programs was presented. Miss Namoura, an experienced folk dancer, entertained us with delightful Burmese, Indian, and Spanish folk dances. The boys were especially interested in the program pre- sented by popular race car driver, Don Freeland. Mr. Freeland's talk emphasized safety on highway. For an intriguing change, Mr. Bogarous displayed his artistic ability by giving a demonstration on sculpturing. School skits, movies, Public Service demonstrations, and many other programs provided us with much enjoy- ment and enriched our minds with grateful knowledge. l I Dr. Travis helped us celebrate Lincoln's birthday. 'l5 Even the famed Zorro arrived to help sell the Minaret ! Lita Namoura delighted the student body with a presentation of Oriental dances. i AQ marvelous tudents Win Honors NW! Some couples, seeming to agree on styles, appeared in matching shirts and blouses. The girls arranged their hair in ponytails, ducktails and pageboys, while the boys stuck to the lvy League look. Girls' legs, arrayed in leotights, took on an entirely new appearance as they turned black, red, and even blue. Shoe styles ranged from the newest suedes and flats to the standard saddles and bucks. The second, an in- tensely dramatic play of a proverty striken family that was granted three wishes, was the Monkey's Paw. The action centers around the boys, Vivien, Jesse, and Francis Lovejoy, their parents, and Vivien's girl friend, Phyllis. As the boys masquerade to deceive their wealthy Aunt Jesse, Vivien dis- covers that he has romance problerns, and to add to the merriment, the Lovejoy's next door neighbor accuses the boys of breaking her bay window. As the play progresses, Aunt Jesse dis- covers the plot against her, turns the tables, and eventually everything turns out well, -.....- Cost takes time out after rigid rehearsal These lovely young ladies . , , well . . , er . . . Music for dancing was furnished by Leon Vogle and his orchestra. Festive lanterns and painted silk screens set the mood in the DePauw Union Build- ing ballroom, while a bamboo teahouse and a waterfall echoed the theme on the ballroom terr- ace. Highlighting the evening was the crowning of the prom King and Queen, Larry Brown and Joyce Smith, in a Japanese rickshaw. When midnight arrived, everyone hurried to the National Guard Armory to find a one-ring circus, complete with ringmaster, a clown, and a host of entertaining acts. Between acts the Lambda Chi Combo provided very danceable music, and the waiters were kept busy serving hotdogs and other refreshments. At last break- fast was served and then the clock struck five, marking the end of another memorable Junior- Senior prom. 3 Memories are made of this. Servers peek from terrace teahouse. She took great pride in the many honors the club members won through the years. The F.H.A. also under her supervision became one of the most active chapters in this part of the state. As head sponsor of the Senior class, Mrs. Compton worked tirelessly with the group through its four years of school activities. The custom of opening a Senior class meeting with a word of prayer was instituted by class president, Richie Pierce. As this custom was very dear to the heart of Mrs. Compton, it seems symbolical that a pic- ture portraying this moment was chosen at the beginning ot the year for the inside cover of the Minaret. The students of G.H.S. will remember Mrs. Compton not only as a competent teacher, but also as a real friend who was always willing to give assistance when it was needed. 93 Juniors . . . They are not only loyal sports fans, but also interested spectators at plays, musical programs, and many other activities. The merchants especially show their support each year by donating time and money for an elab- orate Post Prom Follies. ln addition to financing this affair, the businessmen help us defray the ex- pense of the Minaret by buying advertisements. We are grateful to the citizens of Greencastle for doing their part to keep us ON THE UP BEAT.
