Studying, Amid the whirl of social events and extracurricular activities, students at G.H.S. find provided for them a well-planned sched- ule suited to individual needs and desires. This curriculum furnished educational oppor- tunities in many fields. Among these are languages, mathematics, social studies, dra- matics, and physical education. Mathematical courses ranging from jun- ior high arithmetic to algebra, geometry. and trigonometry are offered to all students. These subjects constitute an important part of the curriculum with the varied courses in social studies. A study of Latin and Spanish supply a good background for English and creates an appreciation of the contributions foreign cul- tures have made to our present-day life, even though most students declare the language is Greek to them. In geometry we learn more than 2 + 2 : 5. Day Dreaming .. A favorite activity for those who are athletically inclined, gymnastics help to coordinate muscles and develop physical strength. This year G.H.S. was well represented by girls enrolled in club work, Becky Suther- lin, Jean Butts, Carolyn Flint, Velda Stwalley, and Marilyn Mann competed in the district judging Contest after winning locally. In addition, Marilyn, Velda, and Carolyn parti- cipated in state-wide competition. Patty Steele, Beverly Best, and Sue Caspar also made good showing with their demonstrations while Nancy Flint was a finalist in the County Dress Revue. For her Forestry exhibit, Maxine Herriott was awarded a State Fair entry, and Marilyn Mann received similar entries in Food Preservation and Safety. Junior winners included Mary Wright, Joyce Reeves, Marcia Sims, Ora Grimes, Carol Thorlton, Candy Balay, and Carol Blue. Each year a select group of seniors is elected to the G.H.S. Hall of Fame by their classmates. The selection of these students is based upon their four-year record of effort and achievement in various fields of activity, as well as upon personal attributes. Gib Brown scored on a i2 yard run early in the second quarter to give the Cubs an edge over the B. U.'s. Late in the third quarter, quarterback Bill Fobes sneaked over for the T.D. The B.U's then took over from their own 20 and marched all the way to the Cubs l yard line. However, the G.H.S. line held tight. The game ended l3-O. The second game the Cubs traveled to Plainfield, only to be upset -by a score of 26- l3. However, the Cubs did draw first blood by sending fullback Bob Bridges over the line to put the score 7-0. The aggressivness' was too much for the Cubs though. After their defeat from Plainfield, the Cubs bounced back and defeated Dugger 21- l2. Bill Fobes and John Ray did brilliant passing and receiving, they were big factors in winning this game. The next time out, the Cubs were defeated by a strong Lebanon team. The Labanon aggregation was- a running one and proved to be too much for our boys. The Cubs traveled to their next two games: Martinsville and Danville. Paul Gould scored from the one yard line and the mighty line held the Artesians to a 7-6 victory. The Danville battle ended in a deadlock. The final score was 7-7 with Gib Brown scoring the touchdown. In the final game the Tiger Cubs won over Brazil I3-l2. This was the first time the Greencastle has ever beaten the Red Devils. During the contest, six of Brazil's men went down before the onslaught of the Cubs. The Tigers Cubs ended their season with a 4-4-l record. - in 'QQ N, :N .ff A ll .., eq! ,EIA Q. . x h it .fu N. 1+ 1' YH fl 6 A ,195 4 'X F Z 7? They traveled on the next two occasions, taking one from Attica and then dropping a tight one to Gerstmeyer. The Cubs were playing without veteran John Ray as he was out with a bad ankle prior to the football season. Not babying the defeat to Gerstmeyer, Greencastle bounced back to triumph in their next six games. Of the six, Crawfordsville and Wiley gave the Tiger Cubs a real tussle. Veterans Chuck Dickson, Berg Remsberg and Buck Patterson had at this time led the cubs to be rated No. l8 in the state. But in the next appearance, Sheridan, who incidentally, Greencastle has never beaten, led the cubs all the way. They handed us our second defeat, But again the cubs come to life and put an end to Brazil and Sullivan. After a six day layoff, the cubs had an engagement in the Wabash Valley. The cubs trounced Coal City and Freedom to capture the Prelims trophy. The following week the Record-Setting Season Proves mighty tiger cubs moved to Brazil to take the quarter-finals from North Salem and Brazil Red Devils. The following day Greencastle rubbed out Clinton in the afternoon and whipped the mighty Gerstmeyer in the evening by a 76-74 count. The cubs had then earned a U. P. rating as No. 7 in the state. Another week lay off, and then the cubs met Brazil for the third time winning another. But at the following game, Garfield surprised the cubs, edging them in a 64 - 60 contest. As the Greencastle Tiger Cubs were practicing for their next game, co-captain Burgie Remsburg suffered a broken collar bone. Coach Goldsberry stated that this is one of the worst things that has happened to his teams. lt was a great blow to the fans and to -Burgie, The Cubs, easily defeated their next three opponents: Linton, Terre Haute State, and Rockville. The seniors that will be wrapping up their high school careers are John Carson, a hard hitting first baseman, Bucky Patter- son, who holds the dirt spot. Also Bob Bridges and Bill Fobes will be sharing the hurling task. The other veterans returning from last years starting nine are Butch Tennis, Larry Leer, Jerry Andrews, Gib Brown, and Bob Bible.
