The i959 football team opened with a resounding victory over Arvada. The passing and running of Jim McKay as well as the running of Cowon, Booth, and Somerville provided Greeley with their margin of victory. The player of the week was Doug Anderson. Greeley 40, Adams City 0 For the third time in three years the Wildcats have defeat- ed Adams City. Early in the game Ted Somerville grabbed a 60 yard pass from McKay to open the scoring. From this point on, Greeley dominated the game and Adams City was unable to recover. The player of the week was Manuel Ortiz. Greeley 40, Sterling 0 The Wildcats opened the conference season with an im- pressive win over the Sterling Tigers. The lopsided score gave an early indication of the Greeley High football might. The player of the week was Bill Bibbey. Greeley 41, Fort Morgan I2 An early Fort Morgan touchdown might have been a stumb- bling bl-ock for the Wildcat eleven, but the determined play of McKay and Cowan provided the necessary spark to put the Wildcat scoring machine back in action and defeat the Fort Morgan team. The player of the week was Gary Lucas. Greeley 66, Loveland 0 The Loveland Indians seemed to be no match for the Greeley Wildcats. Successive touchdowns by Cowan and Mc- Kay, early in the first quarter set the pattern for the even- ing's play. Shortly after the beginning of the second half the entire first unit was benched and the second uriit continued the onslaught. The players of the week were McKay, Cowan, and Somerville. Greeley 20, Longmont 'I ln the i959 homecoming tilt with Longmont, the Wildcats managed to grind out their fourth straight conference win on a cold sloppy field. The game was marred by many mistakes by both teams. The player of the week was Terry Williams. Greeley 34, Fort Collins I4 Forecasters predicted that the margin of victory at the Greeley-Fort Collins game would be small, but the Wildcat eleven would not be denied. On a surprise sneak play, .lim McKay scored the first touchdown in the second quarter. Af- ter the half time intermission two Lannbkin touchdowns put the Wildcats behind l4 to 7. After a series of plays by both teams, the Wildcats managed to pull ahead. At this point of the game the Wildcats completely demoralized the Lamb- kins and turned the game into a near rout. The player of the week was Ed McDowell. Greeley 39, Englewood 0 Sensing a possible conference championship and state play- off berth, the Wildcats turned full fury on the Pirates. Both teams had difficulty moving the ball in the first quarter, but by half time the team was leading l9-O. The second half saw the team explode in one of their familiar rallies of 20 points to make the final tally read 39-O. The player of the week was Ran Brunner. Greeley 46, Boulder 6 Greeley scored twice in the first quarter with high chinook winds pelting the Wildcats in the face. Scoring the first six times the Wildcats got a hold of the ball, put the game well out of reach. The player of the week was Ron Troudt. Kvmbers h.A 5 4 .1 M, f- fi 47 x 5 S V , .J 1... Giroult, presented a new idea in high school theater entertainment, Pi-Pa-Ki l Lute Sang l is a Chinese classic that has enjoyed a contin- uous performance of five hundred years. The story centers around a young scholar from a small province, Tsai-Yong, who went to the Imperi- al City to seek a civil service position. He left behind a beautiful young wife, Tchao-ou-Niang, and his fairly well-to-do parents. Upon appointment in the Court of The San of Heaven in the lmperial City, the young man was chosen as a suitable husband for the daughter of the lmperial Preceptor. Tsai-Yong objected since he had a young wife in his home province, but his pleas were futile and the marriage took place. Since he felt that this would only bring unhappi- ness to his parents and wife, Tsai-Yong decided to cut himself aff from his family. Because of that de- cision he didn't learn of the famine that struck his province and eventually caused his parents' death. After her husband's parents had died, Tchaa-au- Niang decided to go to the lmperial City and seek her husband. On the journey she stopped at a temple to pray and there saw her husband, Since he didn't recognize her, she gave a messenger his old lute to give him and quietly went on her journey. Tsai-Yong realized that his wife was still alive and organized a futile search for her. Shortly after the search was given up, Tchaa-au- Niang wandered into the house af Tsai-Yong and the princess recognized her and reunited them in a touch- ing final scene. at-Q ' Q-' .4 ' . Sensational! - that's the word for the l96O Greeley High basketball team. Breaking records seemed to be the norm for this year's cagers. The Wildcats added to their Iaurels a sixth consecutive Northern Conference championship, an undefeated Conference record, a scoring record of lO6 points in one game, and an eleventh straight State Tournament berth. These achievements were attained through determination, teamwork, and superior coaching. ln true Wildcat fashion, the l96O team finished the season in an admirable manner. For the fourth year in the past five, the Wildcats captured the state AAA championship. On the first night, Greeley played Trinidad and came out on top with a score of 79-57. The second game Greeley handed Manual a 57-49 defeat. The final game with East High was perhaps the most excit- ing in tournament history. Greeley trailed East through the first three quar- ters of the game but came back with a burst of determination to pull ahead in the closing seconds of the game. The final score was Greeley 66-East 64. QKTS I AT ats T Jn..
