Mrs. Iohn Bowes, teacher Jldifvlzq, the ,tzulu nf ilu: wnllld The river of time flows ever onward into the mighty ocean of history. History is the written record of man's life and prog- ress. It is significant for everyone to have a knowledge of our world today. With the nations of the world in turmoil and confusion, history is playing a star role. The leaders of our country and other freedom-loving countries are turning back the pages of time, trying to avoid the mistakes that were made before. The study of history adds not only to our tech- nical education, but to our social education as Well. It pro- vides for us background material as to how we came to be what We are and Why. Such a course as Ancient History reveals the startling facts of our ancestry. It brings to light the fact that it is difficult to classify ourselves when races were so intermingled. In World History courses, a general study of World de- velopment and the rise and decline of empires is taken up. American History is the study of the development of our own country. The trials and tribulations which have gone with the development of our freedom is realized more when one has a thorough knowledge of our history and the great men who made it. The Problems of Democracy course develops better informed future citizens. The History Department is supervised by Miss Margaret Evans. Iohnstown High School is doing its part to send better citizens into the world. Under the direction of Miss Helen Hinchman the girls in sewing class are taught how to make their own clothing. The beginners make skirts or jump- ers and the more advanced pu- pils make two piece dresses and whatever else they desire. The students learn how to re- set sleeves or alter a dress. The tuture homemaker will have a wardrobe of the latest style. Also in cooking class the girls learn how to set a table and cook a meal fit for a king. This is made possible under the di- rection ot Miss Marguerite Hinchman. Setting a table in an attractive manner makes for better home relations. In order to manage a home, a knowl- edge of foods and their prepar- ation is necessary as well as knowing how to keep a house in good condition. Homes in the future will be Well kept due to the efforts of the Home Eco- nomics Department. '1 'T fuldflfdfi' 09-'WM Umpnatarzfpaafih . JL .life Physical fitness plays an important part in school life at Iohnstown High. All students are required to take Physi- cal Education twice a week unless they are exempted from gymnastic activities due to physical handicaps. Miss Alice Rutledge and a newcomer to the I. H. S. faculty, Miss Ianet Ullery, instruct the girls' gym classes. The first girls' activity this year was a Volleyball tournament. Later the girls were train- ed in calisthenics. Still later in the year basketball Was played. Tennis, bad- minton, and dancing were also taught. Coaches Clark Shaffer, Peter Fee, Mike Garbinski and Paul Abele are the directors of the boys' Physical Educa- tion Department. The coaches first in- structed the boys in marching and drill- ing. Later came calisthenics and relay races. Then during basketball season basketball teams Were selected. These activities plus races, volleyball, tum- bling and gymnastics make up the year-around activities in the Physical Education Department. 'X L Mrs. Mcxdge Ros cmd Art Class fultwm, the to af 51.365, fThe Fine Arts Department, made up of music, drama, and art classes, pre- sents a variety of interests in the cultural vein. Heading the list of most active music organizations is the band. Mr. Charles I. Aikey is the director of the band that performs at football games and marches in parades. A special smaller band under the baton of a student director plays in assemblies and at basketball games. Vocal music groups entertain during the year at the junior high schools as Well as at I. H. S. Miss Mary Weaver and Mr. Marvin Eshelman are in charge of the mixed choruses. The Art Department, under the guidance of Mrs. Madge Rose, is enjoyed by students because it brings out individual creative ability. Students may enter poster contests, and Scholastic competition in painting, drawing, model- ing, carving, and leather tooling. Opportunities for verbal expression are available in the Dramatics De- partment. Under the skilled direction of Miss Edith Paul, acting ability is de- veloped in talented students. A fine course in stage production is also included in the Dramatics classes. Although the emphasis is largely on performing and entertaining, the Fine Arts Department helps students to appreciate and understand culture. Our vocational boys, through the competent instruc- tion of Iohnstown's Well-trained teachers, obtain skill in a vocation. The skills vary Widely from plumbing to car- pentry, machine work, printing, electrical install- ation, and auto body Work, included. Vocational shops have their own special jobs here at school. The Print Shop, for instance, does printing of various cards, blanks, programs, ab- sentee slips, and many other every day necessi- ties ot the school. The Woodwork Shop builds and repairs school furniture, stage props and such. The other shops also help out Whenever called on to do so. In this machine age ot today, men Who have the know-how in mechanical principles and spe- cialization prove valuable. This has been shown by the Vocational Department. While they Work, IohnstoWn's vocational stu- dents help themselves by gaining valuable ex- perience. A vocational diploma from Iohnstown High School receives recognition in all district Works. Every page of the book was first roughly laid out in this dummy. The purpose of the skeleton is to insure per- fect balance, color harmony, and interest on every page. After the dummy was finished, the Art Staff really went to work sketching, painting, drawing, cutting down, building up, toning down, adding a shadow here, a pencil sketch there. The stack of pages steadily grew, the title page on top, then the theme presentation. And who was responsible for the little man who scampers through the peepshow, pointing out the sights of interests? The Art Editor, Elaine Riffle, under whose skillful fingers the lively guide took shape. With the patient instruction of Mrs. Madge Rose, the art work of the Spectator progressed until finally the task was completed. The neat bundle was then slipped into a manila envelope and sent to the engraver. Finished was one of the most important phases of this yearbook. X5 1 1 gk J Y si O l -1 gi 'iaabg' wif f 4 .' P' ' Hmong Living up to the tradition of Iohns- town High, this year's team was one that we can be proud of. The Trojans got off to a slow start but went on to beat some of the highest-rated teams in the Q- xg state. Two weeks before school started, foot- ball candidates, managers, and coaches headed for Camp Reynolds, their pre-sea- son training camp. The team returned home in time for school. The Trojans' first game and first victory was over German Township. sn fm K Bxwgrldlf' . You don't need a television set to view wrestling during wrestling season at Iohnstown High. The Men of Troy always provide plenty of fast moving action in the sport of grunts and groans. This year's team, under the direction of Coach Mike Garbinski, had their most successful season in the six-year reign of Garbinski boosting a record of eleven wins and two defeats. The members of the wrestling team are as follows: Seniors-Iack Bradley and Eugene Santicheng Iuniors-Ronald Fleegle, Bill Kurtz, Matt Mikesic, Mike Smajda, and Bob Shuster. From the junior high schools there are the following Trojan mat- men. From Garfield, Ray Boring, Don Haselrig, Don Heightly, Iames Kornara, and Archie Stasik. From Ioseph Iohns there are Archie Cox, Iames Nitch, Gerald Moran, Marvin Haselrig, and Regis Gully. From Cochran, Ray Dankert, Francis Duffy, Mike Hartnett, Chuck Horton, Bill King, Iohn Conrad, Bill Livingston, and Dudley Lavely. Last, but not least, the wrestling managers were Bill McKinney and A1 Cortes. Left to right-Mike Smajda, Bill McKinney, Bob Zimm rman, and Al Cortes. Head manager Ted Helsel was absent when picture was taken. I. H. S. MANAGERS Pixie Statler, Lois Hanson, Marlene Blackburn, Ioan McAleer, Betty lane Peterson, Pat Map- stone, Barbara Burk, and Rose Ann Rhoades, our top Cheerleaders. The cheerleaders are one of the most colorful and notable parts of school life. The student body at IHS really knows how to pick 'em for not only do We have capable girls but ones which present a perfect picture of feminine pulchritude. In smart uniforms of black sweaters and flared, azure blue skirts, they make an outstanding appearance at any sports event. The students look forward eagerly to each pep rally during football season. At every football or basketball game the public awaits the appearance of the cheerleaders. They are an undeniable part of school life. Every well-organized community needs leaders and these lassies are foremost in keeping up school spirit and morale. The cheerleaders of 1951-52 had not only Miss Alice Rutledge as in- structor, but also a newcomer on the IHS scene, Miss Ianet Ullery. Three cheers to a job well done by the cheerleaders: Betty lane Peterson, Marlene Blackburn, Ioan McAleer, Lois Hanson, Pixie Statler, Barbara Burk, Rose Ann Rhoades, and Pat Mapstone. nn' 'nnf6'ndqan.d977b1.d. . . A nation is as strong as its people, therefore emphasis should be placed on physical titness and good health. Here, at Iohnstown High School the girls physical education classes are striving toward this goal in their bang-up production of Good Health. Healthy bodies and sound minds make up the central plot, with physical tit- ness as the principal theme. The girls of today, our main characters, are no longer considered the weaker sex when it comes to athletics. They play their roles with en- thusiasm and good sportsmanship. Our setting is the Iohnstown High School gymnasium Where scenes of balls, nets, mats, stall bars, and parallel bars pass in parade throughout our yearly play in a tough program ot various activities such as basketball, volleyball, tumbling, drill- ing, and golf. As sore muscles become more flexible, athletic skills more perlected and co-or- dination between body and mind developed, our modern lassies bring to a close their production for another school year. This yearly program carried on by the physical education department prepares these girls for the future both physically and mentally thus making this drama of Good Health a sure hit in this day and age. Jim to Hand Among the other activities in the girls gym is that of golf. This swing to good health helps bring the physical fitness and co-ordination of body and mind, that is so essential in this day and age. Golf is a fairly new activity in the program at the Iohnstown High School gymnasium, but it has proved to be a popular one with the girls. Because of the success golf has achieved it now takes a permanent place among the other activities in its health value and can be truly termed a swing to good health.
