TO MISS GERTRUDE WRAY KA former teacher and principal, deeply revered by her puplls A shining goddess to her students, need, They rose to heights in which she joyed to beg Athena-like, it was her care to lead Their open minds to realms where thought is free A light was she, Olympian-designed, And yet she gave herself unsparinglyg Hers was no narrow, isolated mind, But strong her intellect and sympathy. ln her last hours, she murmured, HProspiceg,' Her fervent love of letters most divine, Had hlled her soul in rich sincerity, A stimulant more potent far than wine. DRINKING FOUNTAIN In bronze the stalwart Indian stoops to drink The water crystal clear with never a fin, Untroubled by the city trafficls din. Nor does he pause from time to time to think, Nor lift his head above the watery brink, Nor turn his ear to listen for his kin, Nor does he hope a victory to wing Between today and yesterday, a link. And when I sit and study hard in school, I think of him, his drink of water cool. I wish that I could be so free from care. And live all day out in the open air. It seems to me that it would be a treat, But I would always want to rise and eat. -Jay Palmer. Q 1-1---.-.es YQ:-3'sNi-E'-4!16'1 u.-:ga 2:w-esrqew-ga oswqfr : :..e:'9rsM'1e:w4m , --f: ---.. ' f --. . You keep a soher face from day to day, But you peer at us with your many glassy eyes Called windows. If you could only speak, Many tales would you tell Of argument, business transactions, Of cries from the dentistis office, Of the skillful fingers of the doctors, Of hands which beautify the human face And glorify the hair, Of the sighs of the tired stenographer Counting the seconds till quitting time, The dignified gait of the lawyers, doctors, and bankers As they leave their offices for the last time this day. The scurrying of the employees, the typists, Tailors, hair dressers, and office boys! To the nearest street car stop they go, Happy once more to be on their way home. Now at last, O huge mass of stone, You are free to think while eating. Do you eat from that huge red bowl, The water tank which stand on three legs on the next huilding? You may eat in peace now With no clickings of typewritcrs, now to disturh you, Nor cries from the dentistis chair, nor Lawyers arguing with their clients. The hum from the elevator shaft has lessened. Everything is still. At last, O monster, you are closing your eyes For a long night's rest, Or is it the janitor pulling down your hlinds? -Michael Curry. THE HILLS OF JOHNSTOWN Tonight let me dream of a beautiful sight Of curving hills with swaying trees, Absorhing the rays of the moon by night, Soothed hy the cool, delicious hreeze. THE HOME ON THE HILL A weary, winding thread Is weaving up the hillg In solemn peace, the dead Sleep on, their voices still. And through the ancient arch, Around the sinuous curves, On past the ivied church, The dark procession swerves. The lillies sadly droop, The grasses gleam with dew, A bird's complaining note, A granite world in view. There lies the Unknown Plot, Unending seems each row, No more the flood tides, wrath, Forgotten all their woe. -Halcolm Bard. MIDNIGHT THOUGHTS ON TI-IE INCLINE It was dreary in the town, But as I ascended the mountain, The gray mist took on the semblance Of the white drapery or dreams covering the sleeping children In the heaven. Cod had remembered The infant angels, and for fear one might awake, He hung out the stars For light. -Alice Davis. i I1 ' LP : , if -xiii-'-4 45-1 - 7 -'wa -2',--Q-ron-L-ug an-5.n - 3 x,,,c-'u,y,saa43-,34ai. :.xr,..a-Vai., ' THE SPECTA l 4 FLOOD CITY One day while sitting beneath a tree, I thought of the Hood that had to be When Water came rumbling and roaring down On our dear city of Johnstown. Your fathers have told of that dreadful day When buildings and people were swept away, But a city arose above the span, And a happy home was built for man. -Ruth Resley. SLEEPING JOHNSTOQWN The stars are blinking, nodding, Myriads surround the golden moon, Which all too soon is hidden by a dark cloud, But as a rivelet, obstinate to the many obstacles in its path, lt appears again, more mellow and more proud, To brighten once more the globe of civilization, Perhaps, wishing we might be a more peaceful nation. But now, bordering the dimly outlined horizon, An earthly light appears, a ruddy light, darting and dancing, A man-made light from the unceasing flow of steel. Men of every nation toil To transform that molten steel Into something beneficial to humanity. This man-made light lasts brieliy As in the pocket of a thin, hungry waif, an only dime. Again the heaven appears in natural splendor When the blinking stars and mellow moon Rain their gold on sleeping Johnstown. -Elda Wolf. -.p.::,-3-,1gw 4r-s.gf:-fj xi: -v--r.x+cL.q' 4-.ff 5 Jef : Ano: P'-'5'?fv'J'J'?f':--,R on-SNL f1'.'94-:iff 3-' Q ol 2-'rG'tCaL'1-1vs,r9w:1-vvrsf-1--R:-'-r ' ' ' 'hiik , .' gawnwn '. , , , TOR - 1935- YOUNG JOHNSTOW N DREAMS When sometimes venerated people say That though to aid the young is their due right, They feel that oft of dreams we let the light Suffice and undertake no useful way To show the world of our intent to play In life the role of purity despite All evils which conspire to turn our might From holy things to those of sensual clay, Thus would we answer the destructive doubt. ln youth we do prepare an ideal plan Of labor for some noble goal. Train whistles in the night. Some have a long, lonely, pleading whistle Like steel pulled painfully into wire, And their engines move with short and weary puffs Like old men tired with mounting life,s long flight of stairs. Freight trains ....... long and slow, Carrying frightened sheep and crowded, lowing cattle. With just room and air enough to feed the spark of life Still lingering in the weary frightened cattle To keep it burning till they reached their destination, Slaughter. Some whistles are triumphant, short hut loud, Like orders from a baron to his hireling. The Zephyr, a luxury train, With long, airy cars, and flowers at the tables, Lovely women, flawless dress, white hands, Pudgy men, impatient, helching with plenty Swept through the night. At breakfast I read of disaster, a train wreck, Burning bodies, groans, shrieks in the night, And I ponder on the destinies of the dead who will travel on wings Beyond the reach of light. -Milan Glumicich. -f.4.1:p-5.1:-wg-,-1, 11,-j 7- -gf,--ffl-.x.s-4-1.1 4.44 5.-1 : gm cj -7-sff:'x'r-.4119-H 4f':'J50-:w.fivf Q f- I PTGQ cf-Yg'4-ins-vswza-avr-Ld s-e--f x:v -'ct-1-Dee!-bus?-P-r-mJT11-U-' ' ' ' 'lvl'-I-. 4 , .' Will these ingots become strong rails--on which the fastest limited shall ride, Pullman cars, in which eager travelers will sojourn, enjoying the panorama before themg Or an engine, as important to transportation as beauty to a poet? Every particle may enter into the making of a massive steamboat, seen the world overg Or into the numerous cogs of automobile wheels, traversing the highroads and by- roads, Or, perhaps, it will become a part of many window sashes proudly adding their help to construction. This season, while it is one of the happiest in our lives, also brings regrets. On the twenty-ninth of May, the most carefree, the most en- joyable, and the longest remembered chapter of our lives will be closed. During these two years, we have made many enduring and stimulating friendships. Under the skillful and interested leadership of the faculty, our minds have been trained and our personalities developed. Of our principal, we can speak only in superlatives. You have faced the problems of the school courageously, and the machinery of administration has run smoothly under your kindly direction. You are not only a brilliant educator. Your high ideals, splendid character, and enthusiastic co-operation are an inspira- tion to every student. Our best wishcs go to you and thc faculty of Johnstown High School. Q TOR - IQ35 ' FOOTBALL SEASON The Johnstown High School football squad completed a successful season with nine victories and one defeat. The lone defeat was at the hands of its old rival, Altoona. Although winning nine of ten games, the Pale Blue and Black boys ended up third in the conference with Altoona and Westmont finishing in front of them. The prospects for a successful season next year are very promising as there are nine lettermen returning for the 1935 season. J. H. S.-41 Bedford-0 Johnstown opened the 1934- football season by an overwhelming Victory over Bedford. The Johns were never in danger, the only invaders scoring threat being squelched at the eleven yard line. This game was played at the Point Stadium. J, H. S.-40 Mt. Union-0 After scoring their first touchdown on the second play from scrimmage, the Johnstown gridders went on to give Mt. Union a one sided shellacking on the mud- laden Point Stadium field. Almost the entire Johnstown team saw action in this game. J. H. S.-13 New Castle-0 The Johns invaded Taggart Stadium to tack a 13 to 0 defeat on the New Castle Scarlet Hurricanes, previously undefeated in three years. The game was exceptionally well fought throughout, but the Johnstown boys came out on top. J. H. S.-30 Tyrone-0 Holding Tyrone to two first downs, the Johns gained another easy victory for their fourth straight. Tyrone was out-played and out-classed throughout the en- tire game. This was played in a sea of mud at the Point Stadium. J. H. S.-33 Porlagef-7 The Johnstown gridders defeated the Portage eleven for the fifth victory of the season by a score of 33-7. Although outplayed in every department, the Portage boys scored the first touchdown tallied by an opponent against Johnstown this year. S.-26 Jersey Shore-0 Using nothing but straight football tactics, the undefeated Johnstown High football team defeated Jersey Shore by a score of 26-0. On a wet field at the Point Stadium, Jersey Shore was able to gather but two Hrst downs and both of these were due to Johnstown penalties. J. H, S.-20 Uniontown-0 After being held scoreless for the first two periods, our football team hit its stride in the second half to achieve its seventh straight victory of the season. Although they put up a good defensive battle the first half, the Uniontown team did not make a serious threat at any time. J. H. S.-7 Altoona-14 The Johnstown High School football team was eliminated from the race for the western section championship of the Central Pennsylvania Conference when they were defeated by a score of 14-7 on the Altoona field. The game was played before a record-breaking crowd of 15,000 people and was frequently interrupted by the swarming of the crowd onto the field. Johnstown scored first, but Altoona came back to tie the score before the end of the first quarter and then scored the deciding touchdown in the third period. J. H. S.-14 Catholic High-0 Johnstown again broke into the win column by defeating the Parochial grid- ders on the Point Stadium field. Although Catholic High failed to score, they put up a terrific battle, and only Johnstown's strong defense kept them in check. A large crowd of fans witnessed this game as the weather was ideal. J. H. S.-25 DuBois-0 Johnstown ended the 1935 football season with a 25 to 0 victory over DuBois. The DuBois team was decisively outplayed from the beginning to the end. A large Thanksgiving-Day crowd witnessed this game at the Point Stadium. Q!'JldP Snliprllgsg :1-I-'ect-Dee!-9' .r - . - - .V ,Ai U Z2 .- I .p-.:,..e..-tVb,..g, ,,,vi.,',1:, ,-. ' , ,U ,- ,X-ew g 7.3. After a nine-game winning streak, the Johnnies fell into a slump and lost four of the last five games ruining their chances for a second straight league championship. As a result of this slump, Altoona and Westmont finished the season ahead of the Pale Blue and Black squad in the Tri-County League standing. J. H. S. GYMNASIUM J. H. S.-38 Alumni-20 Johnstown opened the 1934-35 schedule with an easy victory over the Alumni team. Featuring this game was Johnstown's tight defense, the Alumni succeeding in scoring only 7 field goals. V J. H. s. GYMNASIUM J. H. S.-44 PortageQ-13 The second game proved easier than the first for the Pale Blue and Black passers. After leading 22 to 3 at the half-way mark, the Johnstown quintet went on to record its second victory. WINDBER GYMNASIUM J. H.
