24 THE SPECTATOR Athleticf V HIGH SCHOOL boy who is recognized as an au- thority on football was overheard making the following remark: l think we will have a dandy football team this year. Dandy may not be a good English word for a high-school student to use, but the outlook for the football team of IQO6 is so bright that he must be excused for the manner in which he expressed himself. Not only for football, but athletics in general, is the outlook very encouraging. There are three reasons for this: the first is we have a good coach in Nlr. Kerr, the second, we have an abundance of material from which the various teams can be selected, the third, the spirit shown by the candidates insures good playing. This state of affairs means good teams. Good teams should have good attendance. This is all that is needed to in- sure the success of this year's athletics. This year we have seven of our old men on the football team. Last year we had only four, two of whom played different positions, thus we will have only four new men on the team this year, and the positions vacated by last year's class will be filled with very com- petent men, as there are many fellows of required size and weight. The number of men at practice is being daily aug- mented. For this reason it has been decided that we shall have a second team which shall play teams of their own weight. ' Coach Kerr has an ablenassistant in the person of Mr. Bartlett, who played guard six years at the Clarkson Technical Schools. Not doubting the ability of our team, Manager Nokes is securing games with the best teams possible. We will likely have games with Shadyside Academy, Kiski, Pitts- burg H. S., and Altoona H. S. The management desires not only to have good turnouts at the games, but also to have students not playing, present at practice. Their presence will stimulate the players to greater efforts.

THE SPECTATOR 23 High School Lecture Course The High School Lecture Course promises to be a most successful one, both financially and otherwise. The High School will present to the Johnstown public a course as varied and as pleasing as any before. lt will consist of eight numbers, four lectures and four entertainments. The course will be opened on Oct. goth by Samuel Phelps Leland, who will speak on World-Making. Mr. Leland has been before the American public so long that he needs no recommendation. Dr. F. W. Gunsaulus will follow Mr. Leland on Friday, Nov. 17th, with his lecture on Gladstone, A concert, Roney's Boys, will be rendered on Monday, Nov. 27th. This company has quite a reputation, having played at the White House on several occasions. On Friday, Dec. Sth, we will have a recital by Miss Lulu Tyler Gates and company, which will be fol- lowed on Monday, Jan. 22d, by an illustrated lecture, Parsival, by Dr. Henry R. Rose. On Tuesday, Jan. 30th, Edward P. Elliott will entertain us with his imper- sonation An American Citizen , which will be followed by a lecture, Jefferson and Lincoln, by Hon. John S. Crosby. The course will be concluded' by a concert by the Kneisel Quartet. Of this too much cannot be said. lt will be the best musical entertainment Johnstown has ever heard. The members of the quartet were formerly all members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and are all artists of the highest ability. Mr. Kneisel, the leader, is a graduate of the Vienna Conservatory, and has been in many of the famous orchestras in Europe. His highest honor was Concert Meister of the famous Bilse Orchestra of Berlin. Mr. Alwine Schroeder, the 'cello soloist, is also known thruout Europe. If this number gets the audience it deserves, it will be the largest our auditorium has ever held. - q Teacher- When do you find your Greek the easi- est? Pupil - When l don't study it.

THE SPECTATOR 25 The following is a list of those at practice, the first seven having been members of last year's team: Cooper, Ashcom, H. Replogle, Nokes, Suppes, Lindsey, C. Rep- logle, Kunkle, Ashton, Entwisle, Saylor, Leventry, Krebs, McGinnis, Rothstein, Burke, Cunningham, Guist, Barnett, Rodgers, Dolan, Moses. The Athletic Association held its first meeting in the auditorium on Tuesday evening, Sept. 5th. The association cancelled back dues and decided that each member should pay 75 cents this year. They further decided to give tickets at a reduction to those who paid immediately. The girls were also offered tickets at low rates. The meeting was enlivened by speeches from Messrs. Stark, Kerr, and Nokes, The Johnstown Amateur Football Association met Sept. 13th and elected the following officers: President, Andrew Kerr of High School, Vice-President, Dan Shields of St. Columbag Secretary and Treasurer, Harry Treden- nick of the Quaker Association. A committee of three was appointed to look after the grounds. These were Tom Nokes, High School, M. Harrigan, St. Columbag and H. Tredennick, Quakers. The dates the different teams are to have will be arranged Sept. 22d. H. S. - Kiski Game EILTHOUGH our team was beaten Saturday at Kiski, the work of the team was very satisfactory. The team was playing against great odds, and to hold down Kiski's score was all that was hoped for. The team did not have its usual snap and vigor on account of -the heat, and thus did not score. However, the team show- ed that it will play good games later in the year, the novices especially showing up well. Kummler, McCreight, and Larimer played the star game for Kiski, while Cooper's line-bucks and Lindsey's end runs were interesting features on the side of High School. The teams ended in a score of 16 tooin favor of Kiski. The lineup was: ' Kzklzi Poszhon High School Larimer ..... left end ..... Ashton Wagner ..... left tackle .... Cooper Firsk . . . . .left guard .... Saylor, McGinnis
