Senior Section Editor Karen Murray - Art Editor Editor's Corner It is only due to Mr. Bennett's stubborn refusal to realize that I can't write that we have this space to fill and I can't ditch this editor's job because we are short on pictures. (This is a joke Michael) So, as editor I should tell people who didn't work on the book what goes into making a year- book - a lot of time and frustration, or I could use this space as a personal thank you note to all the people who had the patience to put up with me this year; my family, who smiled at the streams of people trouping by their dinner; my teachers, who invariably gave papers due the day of the Arista deadline; and my friends, who stopped asking how did the meeting go? but never stopped listening. But since those people may not read this, and the staff will, I should address some of my remarks to the staff. As editor, I have learned a lot, like how to make lists of things that have to be done. For example; remember to - acknowledge Andy as the master of masters and Stewart as the best pile-maker of them all. Tell Jill that I'll tell Wynne about the next meeting. Get Cheryl a new pair of knees and Michael a helper who does everything but take pictures. Assure David that I don't bite. Send Joyce and the Baker Hill gang a chauffering bill (though I did offer). Arrange one meeting so that Leslie doesn't have a test the next day. Remind Linda that it is only because she is paranoid. Give the keys to next years' editors to the not-quite-soundproof, al- most invisible, coffee haven (otherwise known as the Arista office). Check back next year to see if anyone has found my sanity yet. Find a place for Mr. Bennett to smoke in peace. Learn how to say Thank you everyone without all the rest of this wind-up. Vol XLIX. SPORTS HAMMERHEADS NAL The highlight of the Great Neck North soccer season came on opening day, when North stunned highly touted Garden City. After the victory, Joon Ho Moon, who scored the game winner, exclaimed, dun't believe it, referring to North's first defeat of Garden City in several years. The game was played at home where North proved to be invincible, winning all seven games played on their own turf and giving up only one goal. The first half of the season was marred only by losses to Plainview Kennedy and Port Washington. The team made up for those early season defeats by shutting out both teams at home. These two victories and two more confrontations ver- sus Garden City highlighted the second half of the season. North's defense consisting of fullbacks Andy Rubenstein (captain), Dave Hirsch, Paul Slakter, and goalies Wayne Bo- kat (captain) and Jon Rivers, allowed only 12 goals, and collected eight shutouts. The offensive unit, led by forwards Mike Smolens (captain) and Moon, who combined for 17 goals, tallied 35. The midfielders were Steve Salko, David Weiser, Scott Spector, Kyrnan Harvey, and Andy Inkles. The forward line was rounded off with David Vogel, Mike Nassiri, Kavan Rahbari and Sharam Sarrafzadeh. The team, under the auspices of head coach Tom Pierzga, finished the season with 10 wins, four losses and a tie. The Hammerheads came in second in their highly competitive division, after compiling an 8-3-1 league record. In the Nassau County playoffs. North lost in the quarterfinals to Garden City. North had won two previous matches, defeating Sewanaka and Lawrence. Prospects for next year appear bright for Coach Pierzga, and new assistant coach Angelo Sabetelli, as nine lettermen will return. “Good wins, tough losses, great season. T. Pele. 149 150 RUN WILD HARRIERS Under the direction of Coach Peter Hugo, the 1979 Harriers compiled the best record ever achieved by a cross country team at North Sen- ior — twelve wins and two losses. The vorsity squad, which was comprised of Captain Jon Gross, fellow senior John Rizzi, juniors Steve Lipari and Gregg Malkary, and sophomores Adam McKenzie, David Boree, and Evan Bender, fin- ished an impressive second in their division and third in their conference. Led by All-Conference stars Gross and McKen- zie, the orange and blue wave of North's hard working runners trounced the potentially threat- ening Port Washington, Hewlett, Plainedge, and Wantagh teams. The only losses suffered during this highly successful fall season were to the strong squads of Freeport and Bethpdge. Performing less admirably at the more crowd- ed, Saturday meets, North's varsity finished a somewhat disappointing fifteenth during the Sec- tion 8 Open County Championships held at Beth- page State Park. The weekend spent at Pough- keepsie on October 20 was a relative success. At the Marist meet and at other meets throughout the season, team spirit and a sense of comraderie were always prevalent. The winning attitude of this closely knit varsity squad and the leadership of altruistic Coach Hugo contributed tremendously to the team's 1979 success. This match highlighted the team's undefeated record in their 12 match season. The team's strength was its depth, and everyone was given the opportunity to play throughout the season. Often, the team substitutes played in singles positions and defeated their opponents. The squad consisted of seniors co-captain Wynne Rogovin, captain Mindy Alpert, Stacey Mender, Jill Smiley, Wendy Solowey, juniors Michelle Gurfein, Judy Mender, Wendy Hirshkorn, Sue Bakst, Janine Wollis, sopho- mores Barrie Kushner, Randi Ross, Barbara Schwartz, Wendy Fischl, and eighth grad- ers Rima Jasaitis and Jessica Buss. In the post season Nassau County Indi- vidual Tournament, North's three singles positions played quite well. Jill Smiley reached the third round and Randi Ross and Wynne Rogovin reached the quarter- finals. In doubles, the teams of Stacey Mender and Mindy Alpert, and Sue Bakst and Wendy Fischl, placed second and third in the county, respectively, and each qualified for the New York State Tourna- ment. While the team is losing the character and leadership displayed by its seniors, the future looks bright for North's County WIN FOURTH I had a great time playing on the team and am sad that this season was my last. They just missed making the play-offs. Coached by Joan Grunebaum, the varsity team is losing seven seniors, including their goalie, Mindy Alpert. This year, for the first time, Great Neck North had a junior varsity field hockey team, coached by Patty Hugo. This team had an undefeat- ed record. It is the hope of all that the posi- tions of the three captains, goalie, and other senior players, Wanda Tyree, Naomi Bareli, and Cheryl Gold, will be filled by experienced junior varsity players. We had a great season, but a playoff berth would have made it even greater. 155 back row, l-r, mgr. S. Grandt, Jackie Lewis, Cathy Kuller. Naomi Bareli, Capt. Stacey Goodman. OUTMANNED BLAZERS The Blazers went into this year's football with high hopes. Led by a veteran offensive line, an explosive passing attack, and a tenacious de- fense, North seemed to be heading towards a strong .500 season. Then North was plagued with a rash of injuries, including tackle Richard Sontag and quarter- back John Berry. North was then forced to work with a revamped offense led by All-Division quarterback Ian Miller, who had played running back prior to the injury dilemma, and patchwork offensive and defensive lines. North's defense was anchored by sophomore John Maier at tackle, Brian Marcus at end, and the steady play of leading tackier Mike Mendy Mendelsohn and co-captain Marc Em- mer at linebackers. This year's team was one with much determi- nation, something that seemed to be missing from North's teams since t976. Unfortunately, with the injuries and its small number of players, the team could not face the adversity they had to and be winners. back row, l-r. Coach J.T. Thomas. Coach T. Casey, D. klein, M. However, in recent years, due to various reasons, the Blazers have struggled, often unsuccessfully, just to remain respectable. After two successive 3-15 campaigns ('76-77 and '77-78), last year's team had an improved record of 7-11, during a rebuilding season. The hope of once returning to the winning tradition of the' past was further advanced this season when North finished with nine wins and ten losses. The Blazers won their first three non-league contests, including an exciting 61-51 victory over a Roslyn team that later made it to the county semi-finals. The Blazers were 4-2 when division play com- menced. North won the first two of their league games, against Bethpage and Plainview J.F.K., to improve their overall record to 6-2. However, the remainder of their season was a disappointment as North sputtered, losing seven of ten games. They ended with a league mark of 5-7. Despite a fifth place finish. North entered the open county play- offs, and nearly pulled off a stunning upset in the first round. The Blazers, seeded 26, jumped in front of the 7th ranked Plainview Gulls. They led throughout until the waning moments in which a Plainview spurt pro- duced seven straight points and the win. Seven seniors led this year's squad. Kyle Permut, a forward, led North in scoring this season and last, after which he was an all-division selec- tion. Permut scored over 750 points in three seasons. David Hirschhorn, Robert Cohen, and Jim Cooperman platooned starting at the other forward and center spots. The backcourt consisted of Wayne Bokat, a three year varsity member, Steve Lieberman, the team's point guard, and Michael Budd. Also contributing greatly to the north cause were five juniors. Doug Finkel, Mike Cohen, Mike Gerla, Kyrnan Harvey, and Steve Yanis. While gaining valuable experience, they exhibited the type of character that should help them to admirable continue in the quest of someday regaining North's reputation as a top basketball contender. Coached by Lorrie Klein, the team compiled several impressive times. The most outstanding events were swum by senior Claudia Stevens in the 100 yd. breast- stroke, captain Linda Lipsky in the 100 yd. back- stroke, captain Tina Hoey in the 500 yd. freestyle, junior Marcee Raffel and captain Yvonne Char- vet in the 200 yd. individual medley, and Ellen November in the 100 yd. butterfly. The outstand- ing divers. Iris Vardi, Janet Snow, and Lucy Essi- mont complemented the team's strength. The girls deeply regret the absence of senior Mona Kanciper and hope she feels better soon. Next year, the Aquawomen hope to improve their record, as most of the swimmers will return Three seniors will be graduating in June. CAUSE NO SPLASH back row L-R: J. Ridless. M. Sorek, M. Ratner. J. Seniors on the varsity squad this year are Captain Barbara Eisen, Cheryl Gold, Stephanie Miller, Stacey Mender, Lynn Gilman and Steffi Kleinfeld. Juniors include: Co-captain Jackie Orr, Lauren Newman, Gabi Steivelman, Marsha Reed and Susan Hecht. Special thanks to Myra Hugo, our sponsor, who is always there when we need her. 162 KL TES KICK UP STORM Overall the 1979 - 1980 Kilties season has been a challenging one. In an effort to put together new and elaborate routines, the Kilties showed dedication by the many hours of practice they put in. They strove to encourage greater school spirit and raise support for North's athletic teams. In working together as a team, a sense of unity and friendship was found. With the help and sup- port of our sponsor Pat Hugo the year 1980 was memorable one for all the Kilties. first row, l-r, co-capt. M. Steier, sponsor P. Hugo, capt. B. Kali- mian. second row, L. SPIKETTES North's Varsity Volleyball Team finished it's season with a record of 10 wins and 2 losses, placing them in first place in their division. With a pre-season win against South, North's out- look was bright for another winning season. The team started out victoriously in their first five matches, beating last years division champions Plainview Kennedy. North's only losses came at the hands of the tough Bethpage team. Reco- vering from the first of these two losses, North went on to beat the other teams in their divi- sion for the second time. The exciting match against Port Washington clinched first place for North. Captains Debbie Fogel and Jaime Reich displayed the leadership the team needed to get to the division play-offs. North's tough de- fense consisted of seniors Karen Murray and Naomi Bareli and strong play by juniors Sue Bakst and Leslie Reyes. The starting and an- choring servers consisted of seniors Debbie Fo- gel, Mindy Alpert and Jaime Reich. Nassau County All-Stars Jaime Reich, Karen Murray and Mindy Alpert, along with juniors Chris Impera- tore and Sonya Shields were the backbone of the front-line spikers. Many points and spec- tacular slams can be accounted to these play- ers. Front-line setters Lisa Schain, Wendy Fogel and Amy Boyle contributed to the winning combination of the team. In the Nassau Coun- ty play-offs. North lost once again to the very experienced Roslyn team. This season has allowed me to become better acquainted with my coach, my teammates and, of course, the floor. Mindy Alpert SLAM DOWN 164 DIVISION TITLE top row L-R: Coach M. Bamberger, N. Bareli. D. He was well known throughout Long Island for his 7 year dynasty (40 - 4 league record). Slater departed North to coach the Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy team. Taking his place was former Long Beach High School coach Dave Finkle who was left with the unenviable task of replacing a living leg- end. Dave knew that this would not be easy. Led by seniors Matt Siegel, Dan Azar and Captain Gary Laitman the grapplers entered the season with high hopes. These hopes were quickly shattered as the team's low turnout and lack of experience began to take toll. The grapplers were beaten by more heavily manned Herricks, Plainview-Kennedy and Gar- den City teams. The grapplers continued to lose and although they ended their season win- less, there were many highlighting individual performances. Junior Greg Shorin had an outstanking regu- lar season (8-4) and placed third in the Division- al Tournament. Juniors Bob Lange, who finished first in the Lawrence tournament and third in the divisionals and Alan Glanzman, who finished fourth in the Lawrence tournament and third in the divisionals both had superlative seasons. Sophomore Ghary Gappelbert also had an ex- cellent season finishing fourth in the divisionals. “Lack of experience pinned us down.” Gary Laitman 166 OBSTACLES front row. l-r. Coach D. Finkle. J. Peter Hugo's brilliant and dedicated coaching was unfortunately no match for the plague of midseason sickness. However, led by dauntless Captains Richard Sorkin and Joe Maher, the team fought back from an almost hopeless 2-7 record to teach the annual goal of winning more than half their meets. Maher and Sorkin combined to dominate the freestyle events with Maher breaking school records in the 500 yd. freestyle and the 200 yd. freestyle and Sorkin turning in one of North's finest 50 yd. freestyle times in the past decade. Seniors Robert Brown and Scott Scharfman and Juniors Garrett Nenner and Mitch Mandel greatly contributed to North's sprinting power, while Dan Steckel and Michael Schoen pro- vided backup strength in the distance events. Senior Karen Shanahan and Junior Bobby Sing- er were invaluable as utility swimmers. Junior Charlie Reed and Sophomore Bobby Klement consistently captured points in the Butterfly, Backstroke, and Individual Medley, as did Freshman Michael Kaplitt and Junior Adam Lub- lin in the Breastroke. These four swimmers along with Steckel, Nenner, and Singer will be the backbone of North's squad in 1981. Divers Adam Kanciper, Eric Pearl, and Michael Vardy exuded much talent. Juniors Andy Marks and Clay Sheff were an asset to the team in provid- ing depth in the Backstroke. In the postseason events, Sorkin captured North's only medal, taking third place in the 50 yd. freestyle at the Nassau County Team Championship Meet. Maher placed 9th and 10th in the 500 and 200 respectively. Klement finished 5th and 8th in the Backstroke and Indi- vidual Medley and Kaplitt scofed 14th in the Breaststroke. Kanciper and Pearl captured 11th and 16th places in the diving. KEEP HEADS 168 ABOVE WATER 169 back row. l-r, J. London. S. Waldman. L. Lewitus. P. Slakter. C. Singer. J. Ambos. Coach M. Both Varsity and J.V. fought hard in all the matches. Every member of the team gave a good performance. Enthusiasm ran high throughout the season. Varsity members were Shari Stackman, Ivette Cartagena, Wanda Tyree and Dianne Rizzi. The promising J.V. mem- bers were Sara Dicker, Lynne Schirmer, Sue Stein. Although Varsity's season was disappointing, spirit was high and each player gave it their all. North's representatives in the individual tournament were seniors Shari Stackman and Ivette Carta- gena. This year marked a return to enthusiasm for the bowling teams with victories soon to follow. 171 FROZEN ASSETS IN WINTER TRACK We were but a handful of talent just trying to stay in shape ... and won some medals in the process.” Jon Rizzi The winter track team, led by Coach Jon Folber, capped off a surprising season with a strong showing in the County meet. For most of the year the team managed well with a handful of runners. Besides the fine mile relay team of seniors Rich Heinemann and Jon Rizzi, junior Tyrell Elcock, and freshman Jo Es- sex, walker Mark Wainston, and sprinters Bob Lewis and Robert Morse contributed to the team. In the county meet though, only the mile relay team could participate, and they turned in a great performance, finishing 8th in Nassau. Individually, it was also a fine season. Rizzi had finished 4th in the division in two events, Essex 3rd in the high hurdles and 4th in the 300, Elcock tied for 5th in the 300, and Heine- mann 1st in the division, 1st in the confer- ence. and 4th in the county, barely missing a trip to the state meet in the hurdles. Looking back on their fine season, each looked forward to even better seasons in the Spring. LACjfos, 172 R. Lewis, T. Elcock, R. Heinemann, J. Rizzi, J. Essex, J. Owens. GYMNASTS The 1980 gymnastic team was characterized by a group of energetic, creative and skillful girls. The team concentrated on individual improve- ment of acrobatic skills and poise. Coach Mar- vullo, the center of encouragement and great dedication, further inspired the girls. Captain Mar- garet Reed and Co-captains Jennifer Ferman and Iris Vardi excelled in their leadership and gymnastic performances. The team competed in a division containing experienced gymnasts who compete year round. Nevertheless, North de- feated Valley Stream Central and Hewlett with flair. The season ended with a spectacular gym- nastic demonstration in which each gymnast ex- ecuted her personal routine with confidence and art. GET INTO SWING back row L-R: J. Ridless. L. Stern, J. The three returning varsity players, Seniors Mindy Alpert and Debbie Fogel, and Junior So- nia Shields welcomed newcomers from last years J.V. They were Seniors Naomi Bareli and Ivette Cartagena, and Junior Lynn Schirmer. A pleasant addition was Sophomore guard Cathy Cullen. Throughout the season, the girls worked hard in practice, perfecting strategy and team- work. This paid off as North made a brilliant comeback against Plainview, winning 50-46. Another big game for North was against Coun- ty champion, Herricks. Although our team was plagued by injuries to Sonia Shields and Lynn Schirmer, the team played well, many players turning in their finest performances. Ivette Car- tagena and Debbie Fogel rebounded ex- tremely well, despite a height disadvantage. Janet Tornado and Cathy Cullen played beau- tiful defense. Captain Mindy Alpert scored 45 points, setting a new school and Nassau Coun- ty record. She was also named to the All-Coun- ty squad. 174 S l HltlHOJ OJ.NI BA TMAN Under the leadership of veteran coaches, Tom Casey and Tom Turner (J.V.), the North Baseball team's goal is to make the playoffs this season- an accomplishment that was not reached during last year's 6-11 cam- paign. Returning from that team to lead the Blaz- ers this year are outfielders Wayne Bokat and Morris Levy, and infielders Mike Smolens, Dave Vogel and Paul Slakter. Also, seniors Mike Mendelsohn and Andy Rubenstein, and juniors Brian Marcus and Andy Cohn will add necessary strength to the Blazers lineup. Although the pitching is suspect, junior Mike Gerla, and Rich Markowitz, a senior who pitched for South last year, have both been impressive in the pre-season. During the early workouts and scrim- mages, a positive attitude has been evi- dent, something that is vitality needed if a winning season is to ensue. SWING INTO SPRING tei 3K w Kvr,. • MliiHF 1 .-s' «.’«------ r r • 7. • • . % feM j a - — SgESHEpefel 178 RACKETEERS Despite the loss of eight extremely capable seniors, the outlook for this year's tennis team, again, looks bright. Led by returning starters, All-County players Dean Ehren and Bruce Fischl, Captain Stuart Ep- stein, Jeff Appel, Bobby Klein, and David Gross- man, the Racqueteers, once more, look like the team to head the division. With the aid of returning juniors, Adam Reyer and Steve Levin and a host of pleasantly suprising talent. North's streak of five consecutive Nassau County championships will more than ably be de- fended. SEEK SIXTH If I play tough we could win it all. Dean the dream Ehren The captaincy is a great honor and responsibility ... I quit! Stuart Epstein (x-captain) 180 This is the year the dynasty starts again ... without a pause. Coach Bennett 181 SLUGGERS After last year's disappointing season, returning players, Debbie Fogel, pitcher, Wendy Fogel, third base, Karen Murray, second base, and Jaime Reich, center field, along with the rest of the Varsity Squad, are hopeful for a more suc- cessful record. The coaches, Joan Grunebaum for Varsity and Pat Hugo for Junior Varsity, like the majority of the players, are newcomers to the softball field. Nor- mally, this would hinder the success of the team, but in this case, it might help to start from scratch. So, with practically an all-rookie squad. North's Varsity Softball Team is optimistic for a winning season. 182 BASE-ICALL Y OPTIMISTIC 183 HARRIERS Continuing in the fine tradition of North track, this year's crop of harriers will be making the transition from yards to meters in their attempt to recapture their division championship. With the return of Coach Paradisin after a years absence, the team looks strong and enthusias- tic. Led by captains Jon Rizzi and Rich Heine- mann, handling the distance and hurdling events respectively, the harriers will also be employing the talents of seniors Jon Gross, Jim Cooperman, Joon Ho Moon and Larry Zucker. Sprinting chores will be done by Khavan Rah- bari, Tyrell Elcock and Joe Essex. North's running is extremely strong, but the team's tragic flaw lies in its field presence in the shot put and discus areas. Hopefully, these gaps can be filled and the team once again will head the division. ON RIGHT TRACK 184 SPRINTSTERS A T EARL Y AGE In only the second year of its existence, the girls track team, under the guidance of Coach Jon Folber, received an enthusiastic response in the turnout of over seventy-five girls. The squad has remained large and the quality of the contigent has stayed high. The bulk of the squad is com- posed of sprinters, led by senior Naomi Bareli, ju- niors Diane Rizzi and Leslie Rosen, and sophomore Susan Levin. Handling the distance races are Val- erie Newman, Nina Korchien, Stacey Cohen and Felice Roggen. In the field events, Mindy Alpert and Denise DeGeorge throw the shot and the discus while Leslie Rosen stars in both the long and high jump events. Analyzing the upcoming season. Coach Folber stated, I hope to see development throughout the season with the majority of the girls demon- strating both enthusiasm and competitiveness.'' BIRDES The 1980 Varsity Badminton Team has gotten off to a good start. Returning from last year's team are Jill Smiley, Leslie Branden. Karen Hoff- man, Lisa Schain, Leslie Reyes, and Sara Dicker. Try-outs have shown much promise for a strong team. Both the players and the coach are opti- mistic about the oncoming season. Under Coach Marvullo's leadership, the team is looking forward to a strong finish in their division. The competition in the round robin tournament for rankings in singles and doubles will be stiff, with each girl giving it her all. 186 “It should be a strong team this year, and I hope we come out on top Leslie Branden EXPECT TO SMASH 187 STICKHANDLERS KAP tAfi Utilizing last year's J.V. experience, the Stick- handers hope to be a strong contender this year. For the first time since the 1976-77 team. Coach Green has a strong nucleus of players. Good stickhandlers, Steven Salko and Jon Hausman provide a good scoring punch coupled with the lightning speed of Mitch Feldman and Steve Lieberman, and the sheer power of Ian Miller. The combination of Miller and Andy Siegel hope to win most of North's face-offs. Offensively, North has three fine attackman in senior Kyle Permut, and Juniors Evan Davis, and Brian Jenkins, a powerful crease man. North is fortunate to have Matt Kaplan, a fine goal-tender and an inspirational leader, - Kaplan is the core of a fine defense, and Larry Butler's constant hustle along with the aggressive play of Conrad Fernandez and Greg Robin makes scor- ing on G.N.North a difficult task. Irwin Kishner, Dan- ny Green, and Lance Kushner help on the man- down defense while Walter Chin, Todd Selter, Billy Fleschel, Fred Fuchs supply an extra scoring threat. First year man Doug Klein is expected to play tough. In all, North is optimistic about this season, and is working very hard to achieve the goals set for themselves. 188 Cradle Hopes Of Big Season back row, l-r. R. Kanarski. S. Lieberman, J.
