Hugo To Success The 1977 cross-country runners races to a satisfying 5-1 record netting second place in the division. The Harriers had a continued eight meet winning streak, an all-time record. Fine individual performances resulted in an abundance of post-season awards. All Division honors went to senior co- captains Ira Salzman (2nd consecutive year) and Evan Fox, junior Chris Boree, and sophomore Jon Gross. Salzman won a fifth place trophy in the Nassau County Class Championships. Indispensable to the team were re- maining Varsity runners Larry Unger, Mark Salzman, Adam Shapiro, and Lewis Love. In addition, Neil Brown, Adam Co- hen, Alex Ross, and David Gribin strided to valid accomplishments. The team was led by coach Peter Hugo, whose guidance and enthusiasm paved the way for a winning season. 50 51 The 1977 Great Neck North Soccer Team exper- ienced a season of ups and downs, finally ending on a most memorable high. As favorites to repeat as Division III champs, the Hammerheads came out kicking. They swept to three straight triumphs, cul- minated by a 3-1 victory over South. The team was humbled in a 7-2 defeat to a powerful Roslyn team and from there North fought hard to achieve a final 5-4-1 division record. But with a second trouncing of South, 4-1, the Hammerheads had been granted a playoff spot, finishing third in the division. In the playoff's first round against a favored Farmingdale club. North wore down its opponents with hard run- ning and an aggressive style of play, earning a 3-1 victory. Its next opponent was Plainview J.F.K., an undefeated powerhouse. The Hammerheads again battled with a desire to prove something on the field. Though they lost 2-1 in sudden-death over- time, the players will long remember their deter- mined and enthusiastic effort they put forth on that day and during the entire season. Post-season hon- ors were achieved by Ken Rubenstein (All-North Shore), Robert Bernthal (All-Division), and Jim Sil- bergeld (All-Division). Top Row L-R: Coach T. Pierzga, W. Bokat, R. Berger, M. The team's dissapointing record certainly did not reflect the dedi- cation the small squad had to swimming. The team suffered mainly from lack of depth and inexperience. Although a few of the girls were veteran swimmers, the majority have had no previous competitive swimming experiences. The small nucleus of the team was comprised of backstroker Karen Maier, captain Marissa Martino who swam breastroke and the 500 yd. freestyle, freestyle sprinter Mary Preger, and talented sophomore Karen Shanahan swimming the 200 yd. IM as well as back- stroke and freestyle events. These girls also qualified for the Nassau County team championships, where Shanahan placed 10th in the 100 yd. freestyle and 6th in the 100 yd. backstroke. She went on to qualify for the individual county championships where she also swam very successfully. Seniors Sue Bloomfield, Ve- ronica Kirk, and Kitty Greenberg were also a big asset to the team. Ellen Hoey represented the team in the diving competition and had a very successful season. Coach Maier has hopes of a better season next year. The biggest problem this year was overcoming the obstacles that an inexperienced, first-year team must confront. Now that the team has been established, there is a lot of room for development and improve- ment. Girl Swimmers Have Successful First Season The girls did a great job. Every- one succeeded in improving her- self and contributing to the team. Marilyn Maier $6 Our Most Satisfying Netmen Win Season In The Fourth Consecutive Past Four Years M. Bennett County Championship The Netmen had one of their most successful sea- sons even though they ended their consecutive win streak at 54. After losing to a powerful Port Washing- ton team in an exciting 4 to 3 match the team re- grouped and finished the season without another loss. The opportunity to avenge their one loss in four seasons came in the North Shore tournament. After easily eliminating their first two opponents the net- men met Port Washington in the finals. The first two matches went to Port and it looked liked a rerun of the earlier match. Larry Penn playing fourth singles for the injured Stanley Ross won his match in what must be considered an upset. You could feel the tension being lifted as the team went on to win the next four matches for a 5 to 2 victory. The netmen went on to easily defeat Hewlet, the South Shore champions, for their fourth consecutive COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP. The team gathered many post- season honors. Jimmy Gurfien and Mike Einsidler were named to the All-County team. Warren Gross- man and Stanley Ross were named to the All-North Shore team and Dean Ehren was named to the all conference team. In the sectional tournament to select the three single players and the three double teams that will represent Nassau County in the State tournament Jimmy Gurfein placed second in the sin- gles and the team of Mark Fischl and Dean Ehren placed first in the doubles and the team of Matt Lewis and Tony Fromer placed second. The team of Warren Grossman and Stanley Ross, who won the sectionals last year, were given an opportunity to play for the third spot in the doubles in the spring due to an injury to Stanley Ross. If they win, as they should, this would give Great Neck North an un- precedented 7 out of 9 spots on the County team. Arista salutes the Netmen for their fine season and their many accomplishments. 57 standing: m. rothenstein, d. buss, t. fromer, m. einsidler, g. gumowitz, d. ehren, j. gurfein, m. fischl, s. ross, m. lewis, n. giske, b. idem, m. bennett (coach), kneeling, r. schoenbaum, b. fischl, risa klein (mgr), b. fehrenbach (mgr), j. appel. Grunebaum Flickers Make First Playoffs Ever 59 FIELD HOCKEY 77 This season a dream became reality for the girl's field hockey team. Despite a history of losing, graduation of half of last year's varsity team, and controversial officiating, the Flickers fought their way to a 4-1-3 record and second place in the division. This earned them the distinction of being the first hockey team in North's history to reach the league play-offs. As individual efforts molded into teamwork, North's playing got progressively better. After two unrewarding scrimmages, the Flickers made a dynamic start in the regular season by staying undefeated in the first five games, including a tough 1-1 tie against division champions Gar- den City and a 2-0 victory over South. Because of a disputable loss to Glen Cove, the Flickers fell out of first place and into a tie for second with Port Washington. Despite all, North proved to be a superior team by outlasting Port Washington 1-0, the only score courtesy of Vicky Omeltchenko, to win a play-off berth. Play-off results were disap- pointing as the Flickers lost to three time Long Island Champi- ons, Wheatley. When regulation time ran out, the score was tied 1-1, North's only goal by Jill Mehrberg. After an inconclusive ten minute overtime, the game was decided in a flick-off. Wheat- ley squeezed past North, winning 3-2. The outlook is optimistic for next year when the majority of the players will return. Captain Wendy Norman and co-captain Jill Mehrberg deserve congratu- lations for making the Nassau County All-Star team. Also missed will be the superior play- ing of senior Vicky Omeltchenko along with the support of Dina Miller. Returning players are looking forward to continuing this new trend in girl's field hock- ey next season. 60 The kids hung tough all year. T. Casey Blazers Show Character Dispite Losing Year 63 The Great Neck North Blazers showed great improvement during the 1977 season and provided its fol- lowers with many bright moments. Led by returning seniors Ray Robin, Ira Rosenblatt, Dave Birnbaum, Mike Upsher, Billy Goodfriend, Dan Ein- sidler and Bill Considine, the Blazers played excellent football in the teams two victories over rival Great Neck South and Hempstead. Inspired by the free spirit of the young starters, Gor- don Henry, Rich Einsidler, Joey Burns, Larry Butler, Rich Sontag, and Ian Miller, the Blazers nearly pulled off big upsets over Carey, South Side and Seaford. The courage and great effort of the team was set off by many frus- trating fumbles and interceptions. With determination and hard work the team was constantly improving and should develop into a contender next year. The special efforts of Dave Birnbaum and Ira Rosenblatt were re- warded as they each earned All-Con- ference honors. From Mike Upsher's 98-yard run to Mr. Noyes's commen- tary, the football season, though short on victories, was still filled with excit- ing Saturday afternoons provided by a team of talented Great Neck North football players. The team was young, with only five re- turning letterman, and showed alot of determina- tion, but an inability to coalesce the right combina- tion of players led to many close defeats. The final record of 3-9 was not necessarily indicative of the season considering the many almost victories. The turning point of the season might have been the first Jericho game where the Blazers, coming off a 25 point victory at Levittown, managed to dissipate a 16 point first half lead and ultimately lost the game in overtime. This caused a great loss of spirit which was never quite recovered. The Blazers were able to put things together in their two victories over Levittown which they won by a combination of 50 points. The teams most emotional victory came in their double overtime victory over Roslyn. Yet it was the two heart-stoppers against Jericho, one which was lost in overtime and one which was dropped at the buzzer, and a tough loss against Roslyn that prevented the Blazers from perhaps enjoying a 6-6 overall record. Coach Morrison did considerable experimenting with the sophomores and the juniors which should augur well for the future. Yet the right combinations of North's talent never did come to the forefront. The playmaking and ballhandling were handled by senior guard Brad Butwin and junior guards Mike Weiss and Adam Rothkrug. There were strong re- bounding and scoring efforts by senior centers Paul Miller and Arthur Pergament and junior forward Mike Nass. The bulk of the scoring was handled by senior forward Mike Upsher and sophomore for- ward Kyle Permut. Paul Miller should be noted for his strong rebounding and scoring performances with which he finished the season. 66 HALLELUIAH TEAM AND INDIVIDUAL HONORS TEAM 7th place in Nassau County EVAN FOX - mile walk 1st place in Division finals 1st place in North Shore finals 1st place in Nassau County finals Set new school record of 7.12 min. Rolling the ball straight itself is a riddle. As I haven't come close to hitting the middle Of this alley from which my ball gently glides Into Grand and Bryce Canyons which border the sides. Sometimes to the head pin, my sphere I do funnel. But this mirage of a light at the end of the tunnel Turns out to be the front of an oncoming train. And only promises my future disdain As my pin count will never exceed The number where more than one hand I need To count those pins that fell askew Because of the ball the guy next to me threw. Since at those pins I can no longer stare, I now take up golf with a God-given prayer. Kenneth Rubenstein. Young Team, New Coach, It was my most satisfying season Successful Season ever. R. Berger (Capt) 72 This year's swim team was a young team with a new coach. This combination produced a good season, ending with an 8-5 record. Steve Liebertz took over Dennis Burden's job as coach and was able to take charge and do a very good job. The team started the season with one of the largest swim teams in a long time. The seniors on the team were Harry Armon, Tom Petty, Russ Henis and Captain Russ Berger. Al- though the team will not lose many seniors, next year's team will have to rely on a nucleus of strong swimmers made up of Mike Levins, Rich Sorkin, Bobby Klement, Joe Maher, Morris Singer, and diver Steve Hayden. In the team championships held at the end of the season, the team placed seventh out of fifteen teams. Russ Berger recorded his best time in the 200 individual medley to take second place with a school record. Russ also took third in the 100 backstroke miss- ing the school record by a tenth of a second. The medley relay team of Klement, Berger, Mike Levins, and Joe Maher finished sixth. Klement, an eighth grader, placed in the consolation finals of the backstroke and individual medley. Levins did his best time in his specialty, the 50 free, to take sixth place in addition to his placing in the consolations of the 100 free. Steve Hayden took a third place in diving making him an All-County selection. Klement was probably the first eighth grader to ever achieve All-Coun- ty honors. Berger was also named to the All-County team. 73 Enduring a long season of strenuous practices and the temptation of food, the wrestling team posted a satisfying 8-4 record. The Grapplers placed second in their division, providing key victories in their 37-22 triumph over Great Neck South and a 42-9 romp over North Shore. The season was highlighted by many notable performances in tournaments. Co-captains Mike Rosenfelder and Alex Dannenberg, and junior Joe Wisey earned gold medals in the Great Neck North Wrestling Tournament. In the Divisional Championships, Mark Salzman and Alex Dannenberg wrestled excellently, gaining divisional titles in the 98 lb. and 145 lb. weight classes respectively. Jon Gross, Mike Ro- senfelder, Randall Remnek, Joe Wisey, and Evan Berk took silver medals. Marc Israel, Bob Block, Drew Fritzhand, and Dan Einsidler finished third. In the North Shore Championships, Dannen- berg placed an outstanding second, earning a spot on North's all-time wrestling list. Wisey also perforr led exceptionally, gaining fourth. Saizman too and impressive fifth. Dannenberg also placed fifth in the County Championships, losing a very close semi-final match to last year's state champion. In the same tournament, Wisey finished sixth. The team's success can be attributed to the excellent and enthusiastic coaching of Ed Slater. Since the team loses only four seniors to gradu- ation, Coach Slater can expect a successful sea- son next year. Grapplers Capture Second In Division “We fought and clawed our way to the top Coach Slater 74 75 77 Spikers Serve Up Winning Season It was the all-for-one and one-for-all atti- tude that made our team successful Coach Bamberger The Great Neck North Volleyball team finished its season undefeated, winning all twelve of its matches, and retaining the Division Championship title. The strength of the team was due mainly to its depth, and the experience of most of the players. Although a few of the varsity players were new to the team, the majority of them were seniors with a good deal of volleyball experience. Every team has a few super- stars, but on this team everyone was a superstar. The team's success was a result of the ability of the players to really work as a team, backing each other up and covering for each other on every play. The team's strongest spikers were Jessica Essex and co- captain Laura Herman, both of whom were named to the Division All-Star team. The strong hitting by Es- sex and Herman was made possible by the excellent skills of the rest of the team. The team was able to receive serve well and get the ball to the setters, Sue Bloomfield and captain Karen Maier, who could then set the ball up for the spikers to put on the floor. The strong and consistent serving of Felice Rolnick added a big boost to the team's offense. Seniors Mary Biegen, Mildred Budd, Leslie Hecht, and Dale Reyer were also a great asset to the team and will be missed next year. The top-notch skills were certainly there, but the player's affinity for one another is what made them champs. Although many of the team's members will be graduating, Coach Bamberger and Coach Ein- sidler have observed much talent and potential on the Junior Varsity squad and are looking forward to another winning season next year. 78 79 Stickhandlers Must Improve To Succeed We're young and inexperienced but in the end it's heart that counts Coach Green 82 That's my foot not the ball. 83 84 Girl's Softball Strikes Again Experience and enthusiasm is the combina- tion needed for a winning season Coach Marvoullo 85 87 County Champs Serve Up Another Fine Season Playing good tennis as an individual is a great experience. We changed the entire look and format of page one, hopefully making it more rea- dable and more interesting. We wrote a staff journalism handbook, and tried in general to broaden staff participation. As a result, we have gathered the largest staff in recent years. We even forced our advisor to shave off his beard. Now, we will attempt another experiment by trac- ing the progress of a typical GUIDE POST issue from start to finish. Often, students do not realize the numerous steps nec- essary to putting out a newspaper, and they also do not realize the many oppor- tunities for participation in these activi- ties. Hopefully, the following story can encourage these students to become in- volved with Guide Post. Articles Are Assigned At Staff Meeting Every three weeks, usually on a mon- day, a public staff meeting is held at which articles are assigned to staff mem- bers by Editors-in-chief Dova Marder and Michael Waldman (above). The staff (right), made up predominantly of soph- omores and juniors, are assigned stories on the basis of previous work for the paper. Stories may fall into three cate- gories: news, feature, and sports. After working within these areas, a reporter may have the opportunity to be selected as an editor in one of these departments. After the meeting, reporters and editors meet to discuss how the articles should be written. 153 Page 2 Guide Post June 1978 GP In Action: Staff Fans Out For Field Work Once articles are assigned, reporters have a few days in which to do their research. Copy Editor Sharon Seiler is responsible for insuring that our misspelled sen- tences are gramatically correct. Photo Editor Dan Wank and his staff provide the many fine photos which grace our stately pages, while inspired Art Editor Robert Wallman does the same with pen-and-ink drawings. Business Man- ager Dan Levine and his staff keep us all solvent, as well as supervising ad sales and placement. Dan Wank 154 Dan Levine June 1978 Guide Post Page 3 Paste-Up Workers Plan Layout; Write Headlines, Captions Once the articles are finished and edited, they are sent to the printer, who returns them typed in columns. They are then censored by Advisor Clifford Cobb (below) as horrified editors look on. At paste-up, the way the paper will look is determined and the headlines and captions are written. News Editor Amy Cassedy and Associate News Editor Robin Kahn plan page one, while Feature Editor Jane Charnin works on the inside pages. Managing Editor Paul Kaplan bothers the sports staff and secretly runs the paper. Clifford Cobb censors copy New Position At Printer, Managing Ed., Students Work Now Filled With 'The Pros' Amy Cassedy Jane Charnin Robin Kahn The GUIDE POST staff has a rare op- portunity in that we are able to actually visit the printer and supervise the pro- duction of the paper. Associate Editor Meredith Savitt (right) scrutinizes the ac- tual pages which will then be photo- graphed and printed on the famous shiny paper. Students work with artists and typesetters who make corrections, paste down headlines and articles, and leave room for photographs. Once the papers are printed — usualy a day or so later — they are brought back to the school and a crew stuffs them with ad- vertising inserts and puts them in the homeroom mailboxes. The monday after, a staff meeting is held and the whole cycle starts anew. 155 Paul Kaplan Meredith Savitt 156 co-editors, B. Bromberg, L. McDonell NORTH STAR 157 KEY CLUB pres. N. Brown, v. pres. R. This is exemplified by the atten- dance at class meetings. The officers, who are determined to ac- complish their goal, which is raising $500.00, have planned many activities, such as car washes, movies and picnics. A large part of the money has already been realized through the sale of class rings. Student involvement in class govern- ment has increased due to an increase in respect for class officers. Excellent leader- ship and strong student support typify the Junior Class government. « 181 Sophomore Class Officers 184 185 991 189 193 194 195 1% 'isa — Page 134 — Page 134 Kellys Thomas — Page 3 Klein, Douglas !
