Under the leadership of Head Coach Tom Casey, North was able to play as a cohesive unit through the season. Even when the team had many close con- tests, North was consistently able to play it's best ball and pull out the game; a sign of a great team. No great team would be anyplace without a superior defense, which North had. The defense line, alias The Pit was led by Co-Captains John Yetski and Dwight DeGeorge with ends Steve Gudleski and Fred Rosenberg. The line- backers (who are the heart of any defense) were led by outstanding tacklers Bob Fiance and Mike Rubenstein, along with Willie Peterson, Bob McGintee, Aggie Agababian, and Bill Falk. The defensive secondary was adequately handled by Ed McGintee and Gary Jenkins. North displayed a truly potent offense, led by clutch quarterback Willie Peterson. The running game was led by Fred Rosenberg along with bruising fullback Bob Fiance. The reverse plays were run by Don Agababian and John Peterson. As any running back will tell you, a football player can't gain yardage without blocking. North's blocking was led by Hans Eser and John Yetski. Also blocking for North was Bob Mc- Gintee, Eric Moskow, and Gary Kaiser. Peter- son's pin-point passes were caught by Mike Rubenstein and Steve Gudleski. Any team needs depth and North had it with Tyler Schaeffer, Tyrone Johnson, Ken Conston, Jim Pearlman, Jack Liebhaber, Howard Ebner, Larry Joseph, Jim Hoey, David Birnbaum, Mic- hael Upshaw, and Billy Goodfriend. —Jack Liebhaber. 50 It was one of the most enjoyable seasons, on the field and in the showers. —Dwight DeGeorge. We've been playing like a family since ninth grade. I'm gonna miss it. —John Peterson. A few lucky bounces, a couple of good kids, and we're all winners. —Coach Tom Casey. 51 BOTTOM ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: Don Agababian, Michael Upshaw, Billy Falk, John Peterson, Tyler Schaeffer, Eric Moskow, Tyrone Johnson, Eddie McGintee, Howard Ebner. The team won its first five contests, and looked like they were going to repeat as Division Champions. At the end of the first half of the season, the Hammerheads were in first place and were playing excellent soccer; especially the forward line consist- ing of Gus Rodriquez, George Baquero, Eric Meyers, and Jim Glab- man. Then things began to happen as Meyers, Baquero, and Rodri- quez suffered costly injuries, and the famous North line went through a terrible draught. Through this hard period, the veteran defense of links Co-Captain Dan Chesler, Billy Gray, and Howard Meiseles, and the fullback line of seniors Michael Schlesinger, Co-Captain Howard Budd, Scott Brandt, and Brad Gerla, held the Hammerheads together. Throughout the season steady goaltending was turned in by Doug Specter and Rich Doyle. Besides the con- tributions of the starters, the reserves played an important role in Coach Piergza's 4-2-4-alignment. Hiram Rothkrug, Charlie Dil- liard, Joel Aronstein, David Lanzkowski, and Alfred Gerriets con- stantly relieved the forwards. On defense, Ken Rubenstein, Steve Okon, and Louis Weinberg were important factors. The Hammer- heads finished in second place with a 9-2-4- overall record. They were defeated in the first round of the play-offs by Mineola, in a hard fought game. Post season honors were given to Gus Rodriguez (All North Shore), Howard Budd (All-Division), and Eric Meyers (all-Division). 54 Excellent team, we dominated every game, we didn't get the breaks, we couldn't put the ball in the net. —Jimmy Glabman. No player likes losing, but we still had a good time. A few more goals and a few less injuries and we would have been 1. —Scott Brandt. 55 TOP ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: Leslie Levene, Rena Kaplan, Lori Eskown, Eric Meyers, David Lanzkowsky, George Banquero, Howard Meiseles, Scott Brandt, Hiram Rothkrug, Brad Gerla, Charles Dillard, Steve Okon, Richard Boyle, Louis Weinberg, Joel Aronstein, Doug Spector, Coach Tom Pierzga. BOTTOM ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: Kenny Rubenstein, Michael Schlesinger, Howard Budd, Danny Chesler, Alfred Garriets, Jim Glabman, Gus Rodriguez, Billy Gray. 56 Racketeers Prove Invincible Not often does a high school team win two county cham- pionships in a row, but this year's tennis team completed it's season with an undefeated record to capture it's sec- ond consecutive title. Led by senior singles players Peter Rennert and Scott Seeman, the team compiled a record of 17-0, winning 116 individual matches and losing only one. Steve Spielman and Jimmy Gurfein (at third and fourth singles respectively) won all of their matches easi- ly, and will return next year to defend North's championship. At first doubles, juniors Michael Samra and Scott Schwartz teamed up to make a very strong pair. Each com- plimented each other's game beautifully. At second doubles, Captain Howard Dorman teamed up with one of the five freshman on this year's team, Mike Einsidler, and they won all of their matches handily de- pending on a strong serve and volley game. The third doubles spot was filled by sophomore Matt Lewis and freshman Mark Miller to make the strongest third doubles team in the county. Also contributing to the winning season were freshman Mark Fishl. Stanley Ross, juniors Danny Reuben and Joel Feller, and senior Andy Schwartz. The squad garnered many honors. Peter Rennert and Scott Seeman won ALL COUNTY. Steve Spielman made the ALL NORTH SHORE team and Howard Dorman, Mike Einsidler, Jimmy Gurfein, Scott Schwartz, and Mike Sam- ra were selected for the ALL CONFERENCE team. Special thanks should be given to Coach Marty Ben- nett. Manager Lisa Rothenstein proved to be a tremendous asset to the team. The accomplishments of this year's squad may never be duplicated again. For the first time since this school became a separate entity, the hard working Trackmen accomplished a first in what they hope will be a long string of victories. They captured the division title. This feat can not only be attributed to the skill of the runners, but more so to their spirit. Coach Peter Hugo stated it very well when he said, Without a strong underlying team spirit we could never have accomplished what we did. This spirit was the driving force behind very capable individuals. The team boasts a 6-0 record — the first in many years. Last year was a year for improvement. This year provided the doorway to success and next year the team hopes to be a strong contendet for top honors. Of the ten runners, seven will be returning, each possess- ing that essential quality necessary for a Cross-Country runner. One of the most exciting meets of the year was with the long time undefeated, rival runners of Great Neck South. North and South both entered the meet needing to win, in order to capture the division title. The members of the North squad hope that the long hours of work would pay off. It was a tough battle, and in the end North, after many anxious years, prevailed. As Coach Hugo said, with the slightest smile, It was a successful season. But now all that we can do is look forward to next year. We have a good group of runners and if we only had a little more school spirit we could go all the way. — Paul Siegel. The season started late, because of a cancelled scrimmage against Friends (due to rain). The first league game against New Hyde Park was also post- poned because of inclement weather. This left South to be North's first opponent. North was able to put it all together and won easily over their rivals, 2-0. Junior Varsity also won without any trouble, with a score of 5 -0. In essence, this year's upheld the custom of girls field hockey because of a fine team: comraderie, sportsmanship, and teamwork. A special thanks to seniors; Debbie Andres, Laura Danuff, Julie Gould, Susan Grunebaum, Diane Hauser, Debbie Jaffee, Karen Kayton, and Robin Perlberg. 64 SCOREBOARD GNN OPP. 2 G.N. South 0 0 Pt. The team has been blessed with the wonderful magic that reaches a winning team. In every sport there are super- stars, but on this team everyone is a superstar. Some of the dominant factors for the suc- cess of this years team have been the Tom and Jerry act of Leslie Reich and Amy Smo- lens, the quick drive by Corrine Parker, the great rebounding of Allison Clark, Laurie Herman and Wendy Norman and the brilliant outside shooting of Laura Danuff and Mil- dred Budd. However, even with all these tal- ents the seasons success is credited to two things. (1) the amazing willpower and to- getherness of the varsity team, and (2) the excellent coaching job of Ray Aberman, who made this years team into true competitors eligible for the division title. The 17 person squad was led by first singles player Shirley Cartagena and the first doubles team of Barbara Cimarelli and Patti Eggers. Our sched- uled matches proved to be very exciting, especially our victory over South by a score of 7-1. Each contest consisted of four singles and four dou- bles games. Our fourth doubles team (Pam Murray and Barbara Vanagas) had such a successful season that they qualified and compted in the sectional champion- ship. Next year we will look forward to more successful season and more participants for this fast moving sport. 68 A Moral Victory For Girl’s Volleyball Despite the disappointing varsity record of 3-7 Coach Bamgerger was not disappoin- ted with the performance of her team. Every- one on the team played up to their ability which was all Coach Bamberger could ask for. This year's record did not reflect the good teamwork and potential of the Squad. A majority of the matches lost were not won by overwhelming victories for the opposing teams. The scores were close which provided exciting games for both the team members as well as the spectators. The squad was made up of five seniors and four juniors. The seniors departing form the squad are Capt. Debbie Jaffee, Co.-capt. —Diane Hauser, Laura Danuff, Susan Grune- baum and Kathi Saks. The Junior Varsity team was coached by a former student and active athlete of our school, Donny Einsidler. It should not be hard to get a victorious Varsity squad next year with all the talent discovered from the Junior varsity team this year. All the team members wish to offer their thanks to both Coach Bamberger and Coach Einsidler for having patience and devotion their time to the 1975-76 Volleyball Teams. Season Yields First North Shore Champ Ever The Grappler's season started off impressevely as they overwhelmingly won the nine-team Xaverian Tournament. The team then finished a close second in the Lawrence Tournament. Xaverian champions were: David Epstein, DanRaynor, Joel Epstion (MVP) and Alex Dannenberg. Victorious at Law- rence were: David Epstein, Joel Epstein, Andy Remnek and Paul Siegel; Gary Jenkins placed second. After struggling in the first few matches against the tough competition of Conference A, the wres- tlers came roaring back by winning their last seven matches, and finished with a respectable 8-4 rec- ord. Triumph earned recognition as the wrestlers were ranked among the top ten dual meet teams in the county for the second time in three years. Their success was primarily due to the five sen- iors: Paul Siegel 12-2 and John Yetski 8-3; Co- captain Joel Epstein 22-2-1. The rest of the team's success story lay with the fine performances of juniors Dan Raynor, George Wickboldt, Jon Klein, Eddie McGintee, Charlie Jenkins and Ralph Eser. Although North yielded the Division title to Is- land Trees, ranked 1 in the county. North had an incredible 15 place winners in the Division; a school record. Seniors David and Joel Epstein each won their second straight Division championships, while John Yetski placed second. Seniors Gary Jenkins and Paul Siegel both placed in the Divi- sions for the third straight year. The underclassman also placed indicating that the future classes will continue our winning tradition. Climaxing the season, Joel Epstein obliterated all opponents en route to becoming North's first North Shore Champion ever. In a repeat performance of last year, David Epstein outwrestled all but one, in taking the North Shore Silver Medal. The team wrestled with tenacity, now they can eat with gusto! 70 GNN OPP 15 Framingdale 37 17 Locust Valley 27 36 G.N. Three losses, against Plain- view JFK, Uniondale, and arch rival South could easily gone in North's favor, changing a mediocre record into an excellent one. The South defeat was especially painful, as North took the majority of events but was sunk by its lack of depth. During the regular season the most consistant perform- er was sophomore Russ Berger, who easily has a shot at being the finest North swimmer in history. He was domi- nant in the individual medley and the backstroke and equal- ly adept at the other events. Jeff Citrin and Bruce Glasser were the leading freestylers, aided by Ron Lense, Seth Towbis, and Tom Petty. Eugene Sharp had a fine year in butterfly, as did Jim Citrin and Andy Valentine in back- stroke. The divers, June Preger and Mark Twisty Fried- mann, were both valuable assets. The breaststroke event was primarily swam by Mike Klement and Jeff Citrin. Rounding out the squad was the indefatiguable corps of girls—Rina Rosolio, Caren Maier, Carol Shapiro and Debbie Narkun. The County Championships did not go well for the Aquamen except for one case; Russ Berger shocked every- one by qualifying for the finals in the I.M. in school rec- ord time, taking sixth place. He also finished fourth in the consolation finals (a runoff between the seventh through twelfth place qualifiers) in the 100 yard freestyle. The only other performance near potential were by Sharp, who took second in the consolations in the fly, and the free relay of Glasser, Berger, Citrin, and Citrin, which took first in the consolations. Luckily for Coach Dennis Burden's weak heart, pros- pects for next year are somewhat better, as only three sen- iors were on the squad. For many, though, there is no time like the present. 72 GNN OPPONENT OPP. 59 Hewlett 110 % Calhoun 64 97 Southside 67 92 Wantagh 76 78 Uniondale 93 39 Plainview 44 51 Farmingdale 120 51 Bethpage 118 85 GN South 87 93 Hicksville 74 77 Sy osset 94 22 1 2 Plainview 59 1 2 49 Long Beach 120 101 Freeport 56 Herricks forfeit 87 Jericho 84 I 99 1 2 Westbury 68 1 2 TOP—coach dennis burden, karen maier, andy valentine, ronny lense, debbie narkun, russ berger, mike klement, seth towbis, jeff citrin. Early wins over Bethpage, Syosset and Port Washington, set them at 3-0 early in the season. Unfor- funitly, after that, it was all downhill. With a few breaks the might have been playoff bound, but continued to lose by slim margins. Despite hard times, strong performances were consistently turned in by Howard Dorman, Howie Budd, Mike Rubenstein, and leading scorer Scott Seeman. 74 76 SCOREBOARD OPPONENT Jericho Lost Island Trees Lost Westbury Lost Division Ave Won Roslyn Lost G.N. South Lost First Season For Sluggettes 78 Winter Track Is Snow Fun The Great Neck North Winter Track team pla- gued by injuries, sickness and lack of experience, still managed to post a fine showing. The team had its finest turnover ever, unlike past years when winter track was merely a small group of dedicated runners. Coached by Peter Hugo and captained by sen- iors Bill Falk and Seth Ohlstein, the squad of thirty trackmen was a definite contender for the division championship. With the team's depth centered around the div- ision winning cross country team of Dave Halpert, Chris Omeltchenko, Doug Abeles, Mark Levinson, and sophomore Ira Salzman, the track team was also endowed with many other outstanding per- formers, such as Seth Ohlstein, Dave Sheiman, Joe Balsamello and Billy Marks in the sprinting events. The hurdling events were well handled by juniors Danny Lurie and Brad Shields. The middle distances were capably filled by Bruce Kaplan and Steven Litner in the 300, Bill Falk in the 600 and Eric Early in the 1000. In the high jumps seniors Michael Lynn and Peter Mehrberg performed admirably as did weightmen Dwight DeGeorge and Hans Eser. 79 Batmen Blaze Through Bases The 1976 North Batmen appear to have the makings of a championship ballclub. The weight of the team's success will fall on the contribution of the returnees. Their experience should be in- valuable as the Blazers enter the spring season. Consistency is important in the defensive stragedy of a baseball team. This year's infield might attain a proficient level with the help of a good pre-season. Returning infielders will be Craig Howard, playing his second year at first base, and John Peterson, a quick second base- man known for his all around ability at the posi- tion. The outfield will play a vital role in the Blazer's game. The only returning player will be Hiram Rothkrug, who assisted in many victories last year. The work of this year's pitching staff will be crucial to the Blazer effort. It will feature seniors Steve Gudleski, Robbie Muller, and Tyler Schaeffer. All these hurlers have proven them- selves in past seasons and should be ready to go for the spring. Catching for these pitchers will be Mike Rubenstein, another senior. With the addition of some terrific hitting, this team should well be on their way to victory. Tom Casey, one of the best coaches in the business will get everything together in order to make this a very prosperous spring for the Blazer Batmen. 82 83 Pinheads Have Successful The boys bowling team, which has been historically weak, displayed surprizing strength this season and just missed making the playoffs by one game.Led by Dave Boomer Tanzman, Fred handicap Ostrove and supported by Jeff ha Haar, Robert Alan Aboody and Big Dave Gutchen the pinheads started off in great style and were in second place after half the season. They then experienced a let down and dropped to sixth. A final push at the end of the season brought to them a tie with Herricks and North fighting it out for the right to go to the North Shore tournament. North lost the first game of the three game block but came back to win the second. The final game was close all the way but we lost. In spite of the loss, the season must be considered a success. The spirit on the team was unusally high and coach Marty Bennett and the members of team who are returning are anxiously awaiting next season. They will miss Fred Ostrove who is graduating but feel that they have the nucleus for a fine team. The team is led by a small core of returning seniors. They are; Brad Gerla, Robert Fiance, Joel Goleburn, and Robert McGintee. They all have varsity experience and will be able to break in the many new junior and sophomore players. The following players have come off an ex- tremely successful JV team and will probably move to varsity with no problem. They include, Richard Boyle, Howard Ebner, Alfred Gerriets, Charlie Jenkins, Tyrone Johnson, and Danny Raynor. There are many more juniors and sopho- mores who will add to the depth of this year's team. We're looking forward to a rewarding season and a spot in the post season play-offs. With Coach Mark Greene in charge, Greenie's Guerillas are back in action with a new attitude; they will go far. 86 Missing in picture: Amy Gardner, mgr. 87 88 Super Women Are A Smash This year's girls tennis team is set to swing to success. With much talent returning from last years successful squad and the addition of several promising newcomers, this year's squad has the potential of being super. Through the lead- ership of Capt. Beth Portnoy (missing from picture) and Co- Capt. Sue Grunebaum, the team's moral is soaring. The girls are all excellent players (including freshman Ellen Jacobs), and they are sure to be undefeated. 89 A C TIVITIES •3 93 94 95 % bditor-in-Chicf Circat Neck Guide Post Diane Rudolph Associate bditors... And, if I could do it again, this page would not exist because we wouldn't have screwed up the Activities lay-out which left us with an extra page. So I leave... Amy Gardner; a one way ticket to Cornell and all the senior quotes that we never used. Debbie Auslander; my appreciation for her hard work, her hearty laugh, her hard cookies, and soft drinks. I couldn't have gained weight without you. Corinne LaPook; Mr. Bennett, seven masters to do, one original lay-out to draw (with only four erasures allowed), needed for this year. Abby Rockmore; Wendy Gerber and whatever work Corinne doesn't finish. Paul Siegel; a final, last lesson on how to construct a lay-out and Liz Miller's unlisted • phone number. Sandy Eisenberg; a television set with a built in typewriter (just in case). Wendy Gerber; a yearbook of her own to be editor of, and three new colleges to be inter- viewed at. Nancy Gerber; a pack of Doublemint gum. Ronna Mandel; 200 years of happiness. Wendy Boudin; a wall of her own at the Museum of Modern Art. Beth Petrie and Neal Berthen; artful appreciation and I'm still waiting for the frisbee picture. Ronna Kurash; an apology for not having room for her artwork. Nancy Leigh; Mr. Bennett, Miss Marvuollo, a camera that takes good pictures and a les- son in cropping. Liz Miller; a sedative. Nancy Graham; a lot of thanks for a little work. Lloyd Fruchtman; Sam Gluck and lots of luck, with an automatic button to snap pictures with. Judy Nisenbaum (wherever she may be); my thanks for the beginning of the year. Jodi Summers; a smile, and an editor who will appreciate her. Neal Brown and Bruce Cohn knowing that I finally got their names straight. Jason Myers; Neil's C.B. and my amazement whenever he turned in a picture. Neil Thalheim; the truth, sanity, attention to detail and a poster consisting of a collage of behind. Donald Cohen; money he owes me. Mr. Mandel; on friendly terms and many thanks for his cooperation and patience. Mr. Lincoln; who wasn't on my staff, but on my back, my apologies for missing his class so often. Mr. Bennett; my love for everything. I think you already know how much I have grown from knowing you. And finally... Nancy Hyams; my condolences, my aggravation, my frustrations, my ulcer, my sarcasm, my patience, my ability to cope, my tears, a lot of laughs and the yearbook. Good luck, cos baby you're going to need it!! P.S. I would also like to thank all the other people who contributed to ARISTA 76: Howard Dorman, Jeff Citrin, Louis Weinberg, Bruce Kaplan, Mike Lynn, Mike Ruben- stein, Joel Goleburn, Jack Liebhaber, Mike Schlesinger, Laura Danuff, Elyse Raphael, Billy Falk, David Epstein, and Kenny Cohn. Sturdy, determined pioneers hacked away at the edges of a raw continent and, with blunders and achievements alike, modeled a country with a spirited nature and a united commitment to individual liberty for every one of its citizens. Americans, great and not so great, have given us a heritage to carry on and improve upon. Farmers and soldiers, industri- alists and merchants, dreamers and leaders, are all there in two centuries of progress. But the maturing isn t finished. You’ll find the boundaries of growth as endless today as when our forefathers first envisioned them. You can seek out your own destiny with the wisdom and judgement which comes with re-creation of the past. Your knowledge, dreams and industry will carry on through many more centuries of living history.
