SOCCER After getting off to a shakey start with three losses in their first three games, the Hornets bounced back with a string of five wins to qualify for competition in the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference. For the first time in three years, Great Mills defeated Ryken. This victory assisted the Hornets into the SMAC ring. Near the end of the season, the Hornets polished off Lackey High 3-l to gain tenth place in tournament play. The Hornets then faced the State's un- beaten number one Northwestern in Hyattsville, Maryland. Outclassed by the experience and finesse of Northwestern, the Hornets were clouted 8-0. l l l2l WRESTLING With the assistance of Coach Glenn Miller, Head Coach Lowell Moore contin- ued his winning ways with both Varsity and Junior Varsity wrestling teams. The Varsity wrestlers rolled over all but two schools, Annapolis and Arundel. The Junior Varsity achieved a 5-l record, los- ing only to Arundel. The Varsity matmen brought their rec- ord to ten wins, two losses. This was the best record in any Varsity sport at Great Mills since 1959. The Hornets' conference record of 7-0 brought the SMAC dual Match Championship. The Hornet wres- tlers continued their wins in post season competition with a resounding victory in the SMAC Conference title for the first time in GM history. The victories gained in the SMAC tour- nament resulted in sending ll varsity wrestlers to the District Meet, held at Lin- dale Junior High in Glen Burnie, Md. The boys individually placed two third places and two fourth places. This earned for them a seventh place of the 20 high schools entered. The young Hornet team, which includes many underclassmen, will be losing only two Seniors at June graduation.
