place in the 16-mile marathon relay. Later in the evening, the GM Student Government Association float, using the fair's theme, Past, Present, Progress, and Peace won second place. First place win- ner was White Marsh. The art display exhibited in the educa- tion building by the GM art department won a second place award with Chopticon receiving first place. In the speech contest, Patrick Ryan won second place with his speech entitled Circles. Carolyn Curtis from St. Mary's Academy took first place. Participating in the horseshow were GM's Nancy Otis on Seraphim, Lynn Cline on Go-Me-One-Better, Pam Bluementhal on Satan 's Brocade, and Kathy Willey on My Missy and Ring Dance. All won rib- bons in various classes. COUNTY FAIR The 25th annual St. Mary's County fair opened September 23, l97l. lt proved to be an exciting time for many Great Mil- lions. The highlight of the opening day came in the evening with the selection of the Queen. She was appropriately crowned Queen of Tolerance since it was here in St. Mary's, The Mother County of Mary- land, that the state was founded on the principle of religious tolerance. ln prior years, queens were selected from girls chosen by local fire depart- ments. This year, however, the Fair Board decided to choose the Queen from each of the county high schools, Chopticon, St. Mary's Academy, and Great Mills. Each girl was iudged on poise, personality, pos- ture, beauty, and speech. Ann Levay, Nancie Rowe, and Kim Cook were Queen of Tolerance, first runner-up, and second runner-up, respectively. All three girls were Great Millians! All county schools closed on Friday, September 24, so that students could at- tend the fair. Among the many exhibits were can- ning, arts and crafts, animals, flowers, 4-H proiects, and education. HOMECOMING Beginning with the theme We've Only Just Begun, Homecoming 1971 was marked by change - planned, unexpect- ed, successful. The climax of Homecoming was the night of the big game between the Hor- nets and the LoPlata Warriors. The half time ceremonies began with the sophomores' first-place winning float leading the parade, organized by SGA Vice President Joe Barnes, around the track.
