jf.-1 x, T c.. JS Q Q N TECHNICAL CENTER Now in its fourth year, the St. Mary's County Technical Center is changing to meet the needs of the County youth. ln addition to Great Millians and Chopti- conians, students from St. Mary's Academy and Ryken now attend classes at the center. New to the curriculum is a floriculture course, which was formerly a part of horti- culture. Floriculture trains students in the growing and care of plants. Horticulture classes have worked to complete the lawn and landscaping of the house built at Red- gate by the carpentry and masonry classes. Carpentry and bricklaying classes have also built a sterilization area for the cosmeto- logy department, a brick partition to serve as a classroom for auto mechanics, and a stor- age area. This year marked the first graduating class of practical nurses from the Technical Center. After one year of hospital work, these gradu- ates will be eligible for the state licensing exam. With the increasing number of students wishing to enroll in the cosmetology depart- ment, a screening test was introduced to se- lect girls on the basis of figure and color per- ception. Also, the cosmetology department now has a microscopic proiector which mag- nifies hair for classroom study. Another addition is the installation of a closed circuit TV system which is used to tape classes to aid in the improvement of future in- struction. For students who have been suspended, expelled or withdrawn from high school, the Board of Education has now made an at- tempt to help these students continue through the Educational Adiustment Class program. Students are required to bring books and ma- terials to the Tech Center while they are ab- sent from regular classes. The Technical Center, changing to meet the needs of technical career students, will con- tinue to expand to meet the demands of St. Mary's County. lll George Sullivan, Principal. l2l Hugh Reynolds, Guidance Counselor. l3l Margaret Thompson, Secretary. 29
