JS Q Q N TECHNICAL CENTER Now in its fourth year, the St. Mary's County Technical Center is changing to meet the needs of the County youth. ln addition to Great Millians and Chopti- conians, students from St. Mary's Academy and Ryken now attend classes at the center. New to the curriculum is a floriculture course, which was formerly a part of horti- culture. Floriculture trains students in the growing and care of plants. Horticulture classes have worked to complete the lawn and landscaping of the house built at Red- gate by the carpentry and masonry classes. Carpentry and bricklaying classes have also built a sterilization area for the cosmeto- logy department, a brick partition to serve as a classroom for auto mechanics, and a stor- age area. This year marked the first graduating class of practical nurses from the Technical Center. After one year of hospital work, these gradu- ates will be eligible for the state licensing exam. With the increasing number of students wishing to enroll in the cosmetology depart- ment, a screening test was introduced to se- lect girls on the basis of figure and color per- ception. Also, the cosmetology department now has a microscopic proiector which mag- nifies hair for classroom study. Another addition is the installation of a closed circuit TV system which is used to tape classes to aid in the improvement of future in- struction. For students who have been suspended, expelled or withdrawn from high school, the Board of Education has now made an at- tempt to help these students continue through the Educational Adiustment Class program. Students are required to bring books and ma- terials to the Tech Center while they are ab- sent from regular classes. The Technical Center, changing to meet the needs of technical career students, will con- tinue to expand to meet the demands of St. Mary's County. lll George Sullivan, Principal. l2l Hugh Reynolds, Guidance Counselor. l3l Margaret Thompson, Secretary. 29 FACULTY John J. The highlight of the opening day came in the evening with the selection of the Queen. She was appropriately crowned Queen of Tolerance since it was here in St. Mary's, The Mother County of Mary- land, that the state was founded on the principle of religious tolerance. ln prior years, queens were selected from girls chosen by local fire depart- ments. This year, however, the Fair Board decided to choose the Queen from each of the county high schools, Chopticon, St. Mary's Academy, and Great Mills. Each girl was iudged on poise, personality, pos- ture, beauty, and speech. Ann Levay, Nancie Rowe, and Kim Cook were Queen of Tolerance, first runner-up, and second runner-up, respectively. All three girls were Great Millians! All county schools closed on Friday, September 24, so that students could at- tend the fair. Among the many exhibits were can- ning, arts and crafts, animals, flowers, 4-H proiects, and education. Friday morning, GM's track team, coached by Gerald Minnaugh, took first Nez' . f N sw' def? . 4? , ww J WP' life' place in the 16-mile marathon relay. Later in the evening, the GM Student Government Association float, using the fair's theme, Past, Present, Progress, and Peace won second place. First place win- ner was White Marsh. The art display exhibited in the educa- tion building by the GM art department won a second place award with Chopticon receiving first place. In the speech contest, Patrick Ryan won second place with his speech entitled Circles. Carolyn Curtis from St. Mary's Academy took first place. Participating in the horseshow were GM's Nancy Otis on Seraphim, Lynn Cline on Go-Me-One-Better, Pam Bluementhal on Satan 's Brocade, and Kathy Willey on My Missy and Ring Dance. All won rib- bons in various classes. The climax of Homecoming was the night of the big game between the Hor- nets and the LoPlata Warriors. Seniors Sylvia Whatley, Nancie Rowe l2l 1 Chris Mora, and Lillie Dyson, junior Esther Aud, sophomore Mary Lynn Runco, and freshman Debbie Weeks formed a beauti- ful court for our radiant Homecoming queen, Patty Izydore. Her crowning was the big moment of the evening. Spirits rose above the rain for the Homecoming dance on Saturday, Hallow- een night. This growth has developed within the past five years under the direc- tion of Larry Brown. Well known throughout the Tri-county area for its half-time drills, the band swings into action each football weekend with a combination of precision marching and a dance routine. This year the popular light show featured Son of a Preacher- man, Spinning Wheel, and Basin Street Blues. ln October the band iourneyed to the University of Maryland to participate in the annual Band Day with other award- winning bands in the Washington metro- politan area. Concert season follows the excitement of the fall football routines and is spent in preparation for the annual Christmas and spring concerts, and the district and state festivals where the band is graded. Clari- netist Rod Brylawski represented GM in the T971 all-state band. The Tri-County Honor Band is another highlight of the concert season. The l8 positions held by GM band members in this band were gained on a competitive basis with all the secondary schools in the tri-county area. Spring brings March Grandioso and Barnum and Bailey's Favorites as the band participates in parades throughout the state, most notably the Parade of Champi- ons and the Baltimore Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Day Parade from which the band has never failed to bring a tro- phy. Featuring such all-time favorites as The Stripper, Dot-Dash, Sunday Morning, and Another Shade of Blue, the stage band is alpopular addition to GM assemblies and pep rallies. Because of its performances for civic groups and at the elementary and middle schools, this iazz ensemble has also become known throughout the coun- ty. STAGE BAND Featuring such all-time favorites as The Stripper, Dot-Dash, Sunday Morning, and Another Shade of Blue, the stage band is a popular addition to GM assemblies and pep rallies. Because of its performances for civic groups and at the elementary and middle schools, this iazz ensemble has also become known throughout the coun- ty. Receiving the unusual opportunity to learn jazz from the professionals, the stage band traveled to Lebannon Valley College, Pennsylvania, to participate in a November iazz workshop sponsored by world-famous Stan Kenton and his musi- cians. At this workshop lessons on differ- ent techniques and their applications were given for each instrument, and the group, as a whole, learned about iazz theory and improvisation. A highlight of the year was the spring tri-county jazz festival given by the area stage bands for an enthusiastic public. ill David Weisman plays the tuba in the marching band. Two annual concerts are also per- formed, the Christmas and Spring con- certs. TRAINING CHORUS This group consists of students inter- ested in becoming members of the varsity chorus. Mr. Kurt Hauptfuehrer begins the year by teaching the basics: reading notes, recognizing chords and pitches, and writing music. As the students prog- ress, they learn to breathe correctly and in turn sing better. Testing on writing music, listening to famous composers, and sing- ing is done frequently. 'Sv- QQ? K -f I l2l THE ECHO Plans for the T972 yearbook began in June of '71 as four senior staffers, Editor Lynn Cline, Debbie Biondi, Kim Cook, and Kathy Willey attended a yearbook short course at Catholic University of America, Washington, D. C. August 1 marked the start of the year- book ad sales which would provide a por- tion of the financial backing needed to produce The Echo. Promotion and yearbook sales took place in November. The real work began at the beginning of the school year as the staff and pho- tographers proceeded to carry out copy and layout plans as directed and provided by the editor. Throughout the year, the staff strived to iniect originality and creativity in the pro- cess of recording activities and academic programs which would reflect the charac- ter of the school. THE HORNET Change came to The Hornet this year as it progressed from typewriter camera- ready copy to composer camera-ready copy. This improvement was made possible by the loan of a composer, as well as as- sistance from the printer in the use of headline writing equipment and the use of a wax machine in doing paste-ups. The Maryland Journalist, which spon- sors a iournalistic program for all Mary- land high schools, in its November 1971 newsletter saluted The Hornet for its ap- pearance and contents, and in the Febru- ary T972 edition of the Journal, The Hor- net, along with eight other high schools, was cited for outstanding quality of the photography. JUNIDR VARSITY FOOTBALL A Junior Varsity team is composed of athletes striving to become an outstanding Varsity squad. This year's JV fulfilled this purpose with enthusiasm and efficiency with four wins and two losses. Starting with a relatively new and inex- perienced group of JVs, Head Coach Gil- bert Justice and Assistant Coach Glenn Miller combined determination and effort to develop a strong team. This year's Junior Varsity was led by running back William Wooden and quar- terbacks Arthur Shepherd and Mark Wil- lard. Outstanding defensive players were Charles Thompson, James Royalty, and Jeff Wyrick. The JV improved with each game. ln Coach Justice's words, The winning com- bination of our team was the precision ex- ecution of a few simple plays. 1 Q its This year, for the first time, the Junior Varsity played two night games, therefore precipitating more enthusiasm on the squad. At the end of the 1971-72 Junior Varsi- ty season, JV sent six players to Varsity: Jeff Wyrick, Burt Johnson, James Royalty, Arthur Shepherd, William Wooden, and Charles Thompson. At center for the JV Hornets was John Smith, playing the guard positions were Willie James and Myron Thompson, and at the forward spots were Ben Bryan and Tyrone Marshall. l4l l2l Joe Green goes in for a lay-up and two p0irllS- 141 First row: Myron Thompson, Willie James, Joseph l3l Jerry Bryan takes a foul shot in 0 gdme 09017151 Green, Jerry Bryan, John Smith. VARSITY CHEERLEADERS A cheerleader . . . a person dedicated to generating spirit. For this year's Varsity squad, cheer- leading was a test of endurance. To coor- dinate twelve girls with differing opinions and ideas proved to be an unbelievable task, which was accented by the loss of four girls and the decrease in popularity of pep rallies. Money raising proiects provided money for the squad to attend cheerleading camp at West Virginia Weslyn College, Buchannon, West Virginia, during the summer. Enthusiastically, the squad attempted to inspire a winning season in football, soc- cer, basketball, baseball, and track. lil Carmen Johnson, iunior. l2l Laurie Jo Ryan, iunior. l3l Laurie Ryan and Ann Levay pose for a candid picture.
