Teaching . Teaching is preparing to- day's youth to meet tomor- row's challenge, to satisfy its legitimate aspirations, to rec- ognize and respect the rights of others, and to make positive contributions to the process of human development. This en- tails recognition and accept- ance by the student of a high degree of personal responsibili- ty for his development and the necessity for acquiring, While in school, the basic mental skills essential for reaching these goals. Assisting the student in these endeavors is the ultimate purpose of teaching. 0 -Muwwuuunqulg ,-Q --f, A ' ..,,......--v ,K K sq WNW, I H I xhwww WM-,TMI K rgrkr .4 ,...,.w.w-0 1- ,.. ,V , ,. x wo ,, , , . Philosophy of Great Mills High School The school, as an agent of the com- munity, has the primary responsibili- ty for passing on the knowledge which comprises the culture of socie- ty. The school must also serve as an effective instrument for the encour- agement of progress. Progress should reflect a concern for economic growth, cultural growth, and a great- er sense of involvement of each citi- zen in the life of the community. This progress is accomplished through the cooperation of the school with the home, church, and other community agencies. The school helps each student to develop an awareness of and concern for the rights of others. He will enjoy his rights only by exercising his responsibilities within a democratic structure. The student's experiences should prepare him to become in- volved in adult life and in the con- tinuing process of learning that is life. The school should teach each stu- dent to the extent of his ability, and these teachings should be relevant to the individual's needs and aspira- tions. An important part of these teachings is the knowledge of good health habits and essential body f unc- tions. The training the student re- ceives should prepare him to lead a productive life in the community. By the integrity which it expects and the loyalties which it encourages its stu- dents to find, Great Mills High School strives to engender the cour- age to seek out what is honest and good in a world full of ambivalent values and endless choices. 122 Q15 Marvin C.
