The pageantry of floats built by the classes and organizations pro- vided excitement and color. Emerg- ing as the victors with the winning float, the juniors displayed their im- pression of THE ONLY GAME in TOWN. Following closely in the con- test, seniors and sophomores placed second and third, respectively. Friday night the Hornets met the wrath of the St. Mary's Saints .and despite their valiant efforts were de- feated by a score of 22-16. The half time show commenced with a Span- ish regala, performed by the GMHS band. Susan Wible, voted Homecoming Queen by the football team, was crowned by Harry Ocker. Escorted to the center of the field were Senior princesses Jacki Mills and Ansley Bentley, Junior princess Nancy Rowe, Sophomore princess Esther Aud and Freshman princess Dinah Horton. 1 1 1 C21 The annual Homecoming dance, featured the Butterscotch Valley Freight Train and The Poverty Jive Team. The School Day Begins Anticipating the events to come during the school day, GM students arrive at school with varied attitudes. Slipping into homeroom before the bell rings is a challenge to almost every student. By the time he makes the journey to his locker, right, and fights the lunch ticket line, home- room begins. The Pledge of Alle- giance, below, starts the morning fol- lowed by the morning announce- ments, which are concluded with the reading of the menu. The series of three one-act melodramas was high- lighted with special scripting, includ- ing the kidnapping of an entire cast by John Sullivan. Dora the Beautiful Dishwasher, Fireman, Save My Child, and The Great Western Melodrama, were typ- ical old mill plays with typical hero- versus-villain plots. Practices held al- most daily after school and nearly every night until midnight, under the direction of Mr. Richard Thompson, turned the production into a side- tickling, knee-slapping comedy. The behind-the-scenes stage crew, manned by Scott Merchant, Dan Mief sowitz, Tom Leonard, Vickie Hughes, Paul Payne, Gary Potter, and John Sullivan, and the grease paint daub- ers, comprised of Donna Hamann, Ginny Crum, Vickie Hughes, Debbie Ethridge, Patti Cameron, Sherry Al- dridge, and Donna Pall, make-up con- sultant, greatly contributed to the success of the Seniors' theatrical en- terprise. Rita McDonald I9 Proj cot SECO Simulated Environmental Con- trolled Operations, SECO, introduces its members to aerospace technology and familiarizes them with the work of astronauts. The organization originated in No- vember, 1968, from the interests of John Lancaster and Glenn Connor. In the summer of '69, a simulated space module was constructed. John Lan- caster, Glenn Connor, and Wayne Cooper spent eight days within the module getting the feel of astronaut cramp. Much of SECO's time has been spent in obtaining support for their projects, and so far, the Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River, Mary- land, has supplied it. They have do- nated technical equipment as well as speakers, who hold seminars on the different aspects of aerospace Work. In addition to the simulated flights, SECO members have partici- pated in a multi-phase training course, sponsored by the Aeromedical branch of Service Test, Naval Air Test Center, and have attended spe- cial programs at other military bases. SECO members are striving to in- corporate a program in the GMHS curriculum, which would be the sixth such program in the United States. 4 p g5,g?g?,..r .1 l CD E ,...-orb' 63? SOME SENIORS SKIP LEGALLY Taking advantage of new Maryland law, several seniors legally missed school Thursday, Friday, and Monday before election day, Nov. 4. The skippers, Pat Bruken, Pat Burns, Patricia Clay, Nancy Fones, Greg Miller, Sandra Mims, Martin Robidoux, Duane Schlosser, Lynn Potts Sides, Don Smith, Kathie Wells, and Susie Wible, were cam- paigning for local off 'ce candidates of their choice. Written permission slips from their chosen candidates and par- ents, a list of jobs undertaken, and an essay were required before stu- dents were excused for their absen- ces. An option given to the school, had not the above been submitted, was a 0 in every class the stu- dent missed. During the brief time in which the Jr. Campaigners were help- ing, a better understanding of the intricacies involved in a campaign were noticed. Long hours of fixed- grin faces, aching feet from too much walking, and g-raveled voices from endless talking were the physical pains which drove all vi- sions of a nice, legal vacation from the students' minds. Although no dog-petting and baby-kissing were observed, shop- ping carts were unloaded for cus- tomers at local supermarkets by some vote-gathering seniors. More common duties included house-to house campaigning, distribution of candidates' literature, and an- swering questions. Lack of organization, stated Sandy Mims, was the main fault of this program. Indeed had the program been an- nounced earlier, candidates been contacted earlier, and. the seniors been given more encouragement, and unusual learning situation may have been experienced by more. SYRIAN YANKEE VISITS GMHS Thundering applause and a standing ovation concluded the visit of Mr. Salom Rizik, world- known traveler, at a GMHS up- perclassmen's assembly October 19. Addressing the Junior and Sen- ior Classes as Young Ameri- cans, Rizk held his audience cap- tive as he spoke of his childhood in a war-ravaged old world, of his desires and struggles for an edu- cation, and of his life-long dream to become an American. After five years of parking on the steps of the American Em- bassy in Syria, at the age 22, his passage for America was grant- ed. America was a fairy land, un- believable, a place where gov- ernments are revolutionized by votes instead of guns. Editor Lynda Roper and Associate Editor Lynne Fortini plan the nex edition of THE HORNET. NORMAN MOORE LEAVES GMHS Mr. Norman Moore, science teacher at Great Mills for five years, re- signed his position Nov. 2 to become an advisory specialist for St. Marv's An autographed copy of his book SYRIAN YANKEE was given to the GMHS library, and if students wished a free copy of the condensed version published by Reader's Digest, they left their names and addresses with the school librarian. SGA SPONSORS MOCK ELECTION With official miniature ballots, the mock election at Great Mills on Nov. 2, indicated that the GMHS students favor the Democratic party, however, only 500 out of 1,400 students voted. Those who voted cast their ballots for candidates Mandel and Tyd- ings, defeating Republicans Blair and Beall. With the exception of Republican Roger Morton's victory for Con- gress, the Democratic party carried all other offices. The closest race was between St. Mary's County Republican Paul Bailey and Democratic Oliver Guyther for the office of State senator. Guyther won 251 to 244. The candidate receiving the largest single number of votes was Larry Williams for sheriff, with 404 votes. Man- del received the second largest single count, 398. Results were approximately the same as the actual election on Tues., Nov. 3. The mock election originated at an SGA meeting where the idea was suggested by Mr. Alan Drimmer. SGA member Ron Brimberry or- ganized the election. County. The objective of Mr. Moore's new job is to help ameliorate any preju- dice or discrimination in school com- munities. Mr. Moore will be working in coop- eration with Superintendent of schools, Dr. Robert King, and with the Director and Supervisors of In- struction in St. Mary's County. Mr. Moore's duties will be to con- tact and work with organizations in- volved with cultural pluralism and to communicate new ideas to school personnel and the community. He hopes to assist administrators, teach- ers, and students in acquiring in- sights into and in the acceptance of integration. By evaluating curriculum content in secondary schools, Mr. Moore will recommend and make modifications deemed necessary for students in a bi-racial changing society. Evaluating attitudes and practices of pupils from low socio-economic and ethnic minority groups will bring new understanding of the problems inherent to integration. Observation will help to identify groups whose activities influence the learning environment in schools. After 13 years of teaching experi- ence, Mr. Moore possesses a rare abi- lity to communicate with people of all races, creeds, and economic status. IN i KY ITD. CARDS ISSUED Identification cards were issued to tudents Nov. 18 through Dec. 20. Taking the initiative to make their own uniforms, the Freshman squad, sponsored by Miss Karen Berg, proved to be a very talented and pro- ductive group of girls. Attending both football and bas- ketball games gave the Junior Varsi- ty much experience in cheering. Al- though the squad suffered the loss of five girls from their original number, they displayed organization during the basketball season. Throughout the year, the cheerlead- ers worked to make the squad one of which the school could be proud. Summer clinics, after school prac- tices, and fund raising campaigns were activities which boosted the quality of the squad. This year's varsity squad brought a new form of cheerleading to Great Mills. Kathy Willey and Debbie Eth- ridge attended a summer cheerlead- ing clinic at Wesleyan College, Bu- channon, West Virginia, and brought back ideas that were a great asset to the cheerleaders. The Great Mills Varsity cheerleaders strengthened school spirit at the Great Mills-Chopticon game. squads as mounts and gymnastic per- formance cheers were introduced. Attending football, soccer, basket- ball, and wrestling events required that the cheerleaders learn a large number of cheers for each sport. Dur- ing the season there were always at least two practices a week to keep the squad in shape. Individual efforts to raise money with bake sales and a talent show en- abled the girls this year to buy new fall and winter uniforms. Some of this money was also put into a fund for sending next year's squad to cheerleading camp. A cheerleader's job goes beyond boosting school spirit. Only a cheer- leader knows the time and effort nec- essary to make an outstanding squad. Belonging . Teaching is preparing to- day's youth to meet tomor- row's challenge, to satisfy its legitimate aspirations, to rec- ognize and respect the rights of others, and to make positive contributions to the process of human development. This en- tails recognition and accept- ance by the student of a high degree of personal responsibili- ty for his development and the necessity for acquiring, While in school, the basic mental skills essential for reaching these goals. Assisting the student in these endeavors is the ultimate purpose of teaching. 0 -Muwwuuunqulg ,-Q --f, A ' ..,,......--v ,K K sq WNW, I H I xhwww WM-,TMI K rgrkr .4 ,...,.w.w-0 1- ,.. ,V , ,. x wo ,, , , . The school must also serve as an effective instrument for the encour- agement of progress. Progress should reflect a concern for economic growth, cultural growth, and a great- er sense of involvement of each citi- zen in the life of the community. This progress is accomplished through the cooperation of the school with the home, church, and other community agencies. The school helps each student to develop an awareness of and concern for the rights of others. He will enjoy his rights only by exercising his responsibilities within a democratic structure. The student's experiences should prepare him to become in- volved in adult life and in the con- tinuing process of learning that is life. The school should teach each stu- dent to the extent of his ability, and these teachings should be relevant to the individual's needs and aspira- tions. An important part of these teachings is the knowledge of good health habits and essential body f unc- tions. The training the student re- ceives should prepare him to lead a productive life in the community. By the integrity which it expects and the loyalties which it encourages its stu- dents to find, Great Mills High School strives to engender the cour- age to seek out what is honest and good in a world full of ambivalent values and endless choices. 122 Q15 Marvin C.
