Prffsfnffd By M ' the SENIOR CLASS GREA TBRIDOE HIGH SCHOOL N ORFOLK, VIRGINIA MRS. ELIZABETH BAUM HANBURY For the past seven years we, the students of Great Bridge High School, have been fortunate enough to have in our midst a teacher of unequalled service, loyalty, and devotion-Mrs. Elizabeth Baum Hanbury. Mrs. Hanbury received her education at Florida Southern College, where she was graduated with a B.S. degree. She has taught science, English, and speech here at Great Bridge and has also sponsored the Student Cooperative Association and our forensic teams. The record of our forensic teams is an excellent example of Mrs. Hanbury's work. Mrs. Hanbury now serves as director of student activities in addition to her teaching. As a token of our sincere gratitude, we, the members of the Causeway Staff, dedicate The 1960 Causeway to you, Mrs. Hanbury. DEDICA T10 'Q F URE WORD The staff has chosen Reflections as the theme of your 1960 Causeway and has endeavored to present to you a reflection of a memorable year in your school life. As you turn each page and look at each picture, may each reilect for you a happy occasion or a sad one-but always a memorable one, because it was here at Great Bridge High School that you have left your reflections and have had the school's reflections left upon you. I am a part of all that I have metg Yet all experience is an arch where through Gleams that untraveled world whose margin fades Forever and forever when I move. -Alfred Lord Tennyson Ulysses COTETS .M x 1 F acul ty A Classes Organzkations Sports Actz'vz'ties Advertisements W Uniyersity of Richmond, B.A., is no N DOUGLAS C. ASSISTA Mr. Eaves, our assistant principal, has been at Great Bridge for five years. In this time he has always been willing to lend a helping hand to any student who has wished it. He has proved to be an excellent example of a sincere educator. We thank him for many things but most of all for just being there when he is needed. JOHN B. Suddenly the music stopped, I looked down at the i diploma in my hand and realized that from that moment my N years as a high school student were a memory, a part of an un- X for ettable ast. 4, , 8 P X I had entered these halls four years ago as a freshman. That day I felt somewhat apprehensive but eager to begin my higher Qf Ji , education. The halls had seemed so large-the faces so strange. Yet today I knew every room and almost every face, but I was no longer a real part of all this. As freshmen our officers Chuck Sawyer, president, Clayton Glover, vice- president, Camille Chesson, secretary, Joe Sawyer, treasurer, and Julia Cahoon, reporter, had under the careful supervision of our sponsor, Miss Pendleton, planned our Freshman Fling. That night I had my first big date! My sophomore year I had gained a little of that high school polish so I felt sure I looked as if I had always been in high school. Our eliicient sophomore ofiicers were Thompson Mann, president, Rebecca Eason, vice-president, Julia Cahoon, secretary, Helen Denard, treasurer, and Billy True- blood, reporter. Mrs. Carson was our sponsor. At our Sock Hop, the most successful ever, we selected Thompson Mann and Sandra Hicks as our king and queen. At last I became an upper classman! As a Junior a slight air of superiority was my constant com- panion. The oflicers Thompson Mann, president, Mike Powell, vice-president, Helen Denard, secretary, Barbara Olah, treasurer, and Bobby Royster, reporter, really had a job. They had to make sure we sold enough candy to pay for the Junior-Senior prom. At the climax of our Junior year when we presented Oriental Gardens, everyone felt the time we had spent selling candy was most worthwhile. Without our sponsor, Miss Honeycutt, I know the prom plans would never have been adequate. In September 1959, I entered the doors of Great Bridge as an honored Senior. My mind was filled with many mature thoughts as I waved at Mrs. Creekmore, our sponsor. My heart danced as I thought of Senior rings, the Senior trip, and the Junior-Senior prom! When we walked down the aisle of the auditorium, everyone stood up while our ofiicers Thompson Mann, president, Gary Sanderlin, vice- president, Lynn Henry, secretary, Doris Liles, treasurer, and Linford Harrell, reporter, led us down to the very front row. Outwardly I appeared quite composed, but inwardly I was completely enjoying the envious looks of the under classmen. Now I envy those under classmen for they still have this most wonderful year to experience, and the thrill for me is over. The halls are empty now.-The Class of 1960 has separated, but I know that even though we may never return physically, we shall return mentally many times a year for these years are destined to be ones to remember always. . I found it hard to recognize people who were once my closest friends.-MARVIN JONES due to a scientific discovery by RAY GASKINS, is now 4 feet ll inches, RONNIE TORBERT has perfect diction, and COOKIE PETERSON is now a blonde. While driving to the reunion, I realized how much the Great Bridge business district has enlarged in the past 20 years. Today DALTON HODGES is the local plumber, LINDA PETKIS operates a successful dance studio, and her star pupils are the children of CYNTHIA LAYTON, GLORIA WHITE, JANE HILL, and KATHERINE STEWARTQ CLIFF GRAY owns the photography studio on the corner, P. W. LUTZ operates the insurance company and his efficient secretary is BRENDA FORBES, At JERRY HENSLEY'S beauty salon, I notice VIRGINIA WARREN, CAROLYN TAPSCOTT, and PATSY WALLER are her regular customers, LOREN LUKEY now owns and operates the grocery store at Great Bridge. In the Bank of Cradock we see the familiar faces of JUDY GREGORY, BARBARA OLAH, PAT BAREFOOT, and JOANN BARCO taking the deposits of GERALD BALONIS and CALVIN ALSTON who are still trying to pay for their Senior Trip. On the ofiice doors of the first, second, and third vice-presidents appear the names of JOE WILLIAMS BILLY SPENCER and JIMMY MOORE Out Norfolk Highlands way the class of 1960 is also well represented KAY PEARCE who IS manager now managed by one time bagboys NORRIS WATERFIELD BENNY BASNIGHT and HOWARD BERG MAN today is owned by STALEY POWELL and ROBERT SMI'lH The Washington District fire chief KENNY SHETTLE told me about the recent tug of war between Great Bridge firemen RAYMOND SAW YER, MACCARTHUR HICKS, ROYCF BRICKHOUSE and STEVE BAXTER and Washington District firemen FRANKIE SAWYER, BILLY WALL, BILL GWILLIAM and EDWARD TAYLOR. Incidentally, , of Thompson's is running PAT HOUSTON and ELSIE PALMER out of business down al Irwin's. Be-lo's Y ' , , - Washington District won. The business field attracted many 1960 grads. JEANETTE MERRILL is taking dictation from her boss JIMMY WHITE, who is the county agent. His regular vistors L. G. HARRIS, JAMES GARRETT, GLENN BARNES, JAMES BARCROFT, and STUART SMITH are successful farmers in progressive Fentress. KAY KIFF, DORA WALKER, EMILY CHERRY, and JULIA CAHOON are doing daily secretarial work for their bosses BOBBY YATES, RICHARD DOZIER, RONALD REGULA and RONNIE RANDOLPH. BE'I'I'Y GIVANS, MARGARET REID, and KAREN BAUM are court stenographers where the law firm of CARDWELL, WILLIAMS, POWELL, and GUARD are currently representing WAYNE HOOKER, RAYMOND DENNY, and AL COVINGTON who are still violating the parking laws. LINDA GREENFIELD now owns the Jantzen company, and she was modeling the latest in knit suits. The lights of show business claimed KENNY CARRAWAY who has danced his way to fame on Broadway with, his partner CAROLYN VOLIVA, At the new Radio City Music Hall designed by architects LARRY MEEKINS and RICHARD CARTWRIGHT the name of MISS LINDA THORNTON shines throughout New York City and her accompanist is Juliard graduate PEGGY KNIGHT. Without the Class of 1960 the staff at Norfolk General would surely be sparse. ANNA HERRINGTON, PAT JENNINGS, MAUREEN GALLIGAN, RUTH MOORE, and KAY BURGESS are all registered nurses. HELEN COLEY and JUANITA GIBSON are medical technologists, and are advised daily by Doctors THOMPSON MANN and PAT CROWLING. In the new rehabilitation center are the offices of CAMILLE CHESSON, physical therapist, and DONNA MCCORD, speech therapist. When I arrived at the high school, I saw FAYE TWINE and VIRGINIA SIMMONS who are now running the office. On the teachers' mailboxes I noted the names of DARIAN TATEM and NELDA McPHERSON in the Business Depart- mentg PAT JOHNSON, OLIVE DEWALD, and LYNN HENRY are staying for GAA in the teaching capacityg and ROBERT STEWART heads the Social Studies department. On the bulletin board I noticed a note from SHARON HUFFMOND and BECKY EASON who are teaching Phys. Ed in deep dark Africa. Sharon sends word that they really do shrink heads in Africa, but she quickly adds that Becky was the victim. Others absent from the reunion were DORIS LILES, JOYCE ADCOCK, and BRENDA JULIAN who are on the foreign mission fields. Scientists JOE SAWYER, LEON PERRY, GEORGE OLAH, and CLAYTON GLOVER were unable to leave the nike site at Deep Creek, but they sent a missile over so we wouldn't forget them. LEWIS SAWYER'S Little League team had a game so he couldn't come but the fathers of the stars were there LARRY FOUTZ, MIKE RILEY, and DANNY DOWDY. They sound familiar, don't they. JANET CULPEPPER, the editor of the 1960 Causeway, got the evening off to a hilarious start by reading our Class Prophecy. Boy, that prophet was way off. Then Janet introduced the guest speaker Professor LINDA SIMPLER. After her speech we were entertained by the newly formed Great Bridge Little Theater group whose charter members WILBUR DELOATCHE, PHOEBE ABRAMES, FRANCES GRIFFIN, GAIL GATTON, and SONNY PHIBBS presented a play gigggdl-Elgorn Football to Flab by authors JERYL FROST, GARY SANDERLIN, GENE WINSTON, and BOBBY I overheard VIRGINIA WARREN, LOULA SUGGS and CAROLYN FARLEY, reminiscing about the day they made their first dress in General Homemaking. Later in the evening GLORIA BUNCH noted that today these girls tsounds nice, doesn't itl make all the clothes for their families. You should have heard BILLY LITCHFIELD, WILLIAM WILSON, SUE DIVERS, and MARTHA GARRETT laughing when JOHN BROWN announced he had changed his name. Thank goodness there are still a few who make good listeners like JAMES WENGER, JEAN BAKER, DORIS CURRY, and BILL WHITE because EMILY BOONE, LINFORD HARRELL and GLORIA NICHOLS are still talking. The dance band of DEWEY LONG, SAMMY LUKE, and CHUCK SAWYER provided the music for the evening with their featured soloist MISS GEORGETTE EASLEY. MARTHA HUDGINS, HELEN DENARD, and SANDY SAUNDERS still looked lovely in their stunning originals from the exclusive dress shop owned by SYLVIA MAKINSON, BARBARA SHEPPARD, SHEILA SYKES, CHARLOTTE BASHFORD, and DELORES WEIGHT. They call it The Pals Shop. BILL VINSON, JOHN PEARSON, and JAMES PHILYAW came down from the moon for the reunion. During the course of the evening they convinced BILL MCDONALD, DARRELL COOK, and JAMES LONG to return with them. To them our outdated expression, Go to the Moon, was a challenge not an insult. When CAROLYN CAHOON, and MARY JANE THOMPSON volunteered to return with the boys and be the first women on the moon, I was stunned. BONNIE COObKE 'fiatly refused to let her little brother, now twenty, go on the expedition. Remember how excited she was when he was orn. In every class there are a few who never make it to the altar. and our class was no exception. BOBBY DUDLEY, CAROL WHITE. and ROBERT HARRISON announced that this honor was theirs. Mr. and Mrs. DON HIGGEPSON, she's the former SANDRA HICKS, were awarded the prize for the largest family. Mr. and Mrs. BILLY BURLEIGH, the former ANNE CROWDER, delighted us with their description of their latest trip to Europe where they had seen I.EONARD HALSTEAD, now a member of the French Foreign Legion. As we rose to sing the Great Bridge Alma Mater, I noticed tears in the eyes of BARBARA VAUGHN, BRENDA STUTZMAN, and Big Daddy JAC CALES, and a few stained my cheeks too, for I knew that at our next meeting in 2000 we all would be old and gray -yet always of our youth we would remember Alma Mater days. A large cast of players was chosen by Mr. Turner, the faculty direc- tor. Each year the seniors find themselves very grate- ful toward Mr. Turner for his helping them to pre- sent their annual play. The play, Our Town, is well known to all stu- dents at Great Bridge since it is read and studied in the junior year. We rec- ognize its being Mr. Wil- der's play for which he won the Pulitzer Prize in 1938. Our Town has been presented on both Broad- way and television.
