Team sports winning pride while students add spirit At the start of the pigskin season, a new head coach and a new style of football action and team spirit dominated the school atmosphere. As coaches worked with the team's pride, Pep Club and Band generated spirit within in the student body. Being rich in coaching experience from Ottawa and Kansas State University, Head Coach Sherm Price worked hard to develop a proud, hard-hitting, 100'Zp effort football 'squad out of the 96 players reporting for the first practice. He tried to instill with the team the habit of never letting up. He introduced the Top and Bad Cat awards to honor the best offensive and best defensive player of each game. The fans saw a new style of football action characterized by spirited players. With an abundance of quick, tough and dedicated running backs, Great Bend developed a formidable ground game operating out of the Wishbone formation. Assigned to specific coaching jobs were Coach Price, re- ceivingg Coach Gowdy, defense, Coach Cochran, offenseg Coach Farhing, backfieldg Coach McPhail, trainerg and Coaches Waggner and Lambert, sophomores. As the squad worked daily in practice, Pep Club, guided by Mrs. Bettie Nebergall, used their energies in skits, lock- er decorations, posters, and pep rallies. And the band, under the direction of Mr. Joe Boley, occupied the practice field each morning as they drilled to perfect their half-time performances .
