ll .ar I Alice Humphreys, English III signs out after a tiring day. Mrs. Crystal Cross, English II teacher, finds joy in taking the daily roll. Mr. John Thorton finds Constitution a very good discussion topic. i 21 Students await future, new horizons sought while traditions linger Sophomores soon embarked on a barrage of number learning: locks and locker numbers, book numbers, folder numbers, and club numbers. Getting involved on the first day of school, sophomore class officers were elected at a special assembly. Anticipating for the future, their first money making project was a concession stand at the Pratt game. The class of 1974 proved to be high-spirited at the 1971-1972 Foot- ball Homecoming parade, when they carried a Mickey Mouse banner, to symbolize their role as the ever-tra- ditional Mickey Mouser. For new teachers, GBHS was a wide open sea. Day by day they be- came acquainted with a new high school life. From fighting the smoke in the faculty lounge to picking out the biggest rolls for their early morn- ing snack, new teachers learned from experience. They fought a losing bat- tle as they vainly struggled to under- stand the pattern behind the ringing of the bells as students passed from class to class. When that pleasant voice interrupted a class discussion, new teachers learned not to frown when they heard, May I have your attention please?

Team sports winning pride while students add spirit At the start of the pigskin season, a new head coach and a new style of football action and team spirit dominated the school atmosphere. As coaches worked with the team's pride, Pep Club and Band generated spirit within in the student body. Being rich in coaching experience from Ottawa and Kansas State University, Head Coach Sherm Price worked hard to develop a proud, hard-hitting, 100'Zp effort football 'squad out of the 96 players reporting for the first practice. He tried to instill with the team the habit of never letting up. He introduced the Top and Bad Cat awards to honor the best offensive and best defensive player of each game. The fans saw a new style of football action characterized by spirited players. With an abundance of quick, tough and dedicated running backs, Great Bend developed a formidable ground game operating out of the Wishbone formation. Assigned to specific coaching jobs were Coach Price, re- ceivingg Coach Gowdy, defense, Coach Cochran, offenseg Coach Farhing, backfieldg Coach McPhail, trainerg and Coaches Waggner and Lambert, sophomores. As the squad worked daily in practice, Pep Club, guided by Mrs. Bettie Nebergall, used their energies in skits, lock- er decorations, posters, and pep rallies. And the band, under the direction of Mr. Joe Boley, occupied the practice field each morning as they drilled to perfect their half-time performances . Q ' mv ,iii With wet heads and cold toes Pep Club still generates a fighting spirit. 4 Debbie Robinson, Krista Roberts and Mary Law swing in time with the Black Panther Marching Band.
