At present our school has only a few old .volumes which are not adequate for the needs. A new school library would create in the students a desire for better things and a pleasure in keeping all editions in good shape. The library, which should be one of the most important features of equipment, does not come up to standard. The purpose of an education is to broaden our minds, teach us to be far reaching in our views, and to thirst for knowledge. l-low can this education be secured without the necessary means through which we can procure the knowledge desired? We need a new, up-to-date library. One that we can take an interest in. Are the students going to get one or is their education to be limited by the lack of it? A NEW HIGH SCHOOL Every citizen of the community should recognize that schools are one of the most important institutions in any community. Great Bend has been progressing more and more each year and not a year passes but what some improvements are made. But nothing is done to the High School which is in a very deplorable condition. As the town has grown, so has the enrollment in high school and the same high school that was built twelve years ago, to accommodate the town then, must still accommodate the very much enlarged enrollment of today. Our high school is entirely too small to meet the needs of the number of students. All the rooms are crowded and none of them have good lights or venti- lation. There is insufficient room for our commercial department and for our science course. There are no special rooms for a library, music or drawing room, We have very few necessary reference books for any of the departments and what little equipment we have is old-style and badly damaged. What we need, to remedy these defects, is a new modern high school, furnished with all the necessary equipment that will meet with the regulations of the State and Federal requirements, a larger gymnasium-one large enough for an indoor track,-with ground conveniently located for outdoor athletics. Also more teachers are badly needed. Every citizen who is a good citizen should boost for a new high school. l..et's all get together to work for it. DEBATING I Debate is becoming more and more prominent in high school life. Each year more high schools become interested in it, but for some reason quite unknown, Great Bend High School as far as debate is concerned is absolutely out of the race. We have no alibis, nor excuses, we simply haven't taken any interest in it. It is time we were waking up to the realization that we are not on par with other schools, in this particular activity, and do something to remedy it. SENIOR ADVISORS The Seniors feel that a great deal of their success in the past year has been due to the co-operation of the faculty advisors with the class. H Mn .,,,. ,W ff ,,,,fff' .,,,.,, swf Educ ' l ATHLETICS SITUATION Our High School in the past has always been extremely proud of its athletics, and has looked upon it as one of the principal activities of the school. The students all showed a keen interest in athletics and all did their best to make our school the best in the state. During the last few years an idea seems to have grown up among the pupils .that athletics was not for the school as a whole but only for the juniors and Seniorsg because of this misunderstanding, many of the best athletes have not become interested in athletics until their junior-Senior years and for this reason have not received the training and teamwork necessary for a good team. This is not altogether due to students, however, and a great deal of blame must be placed upon the poor equipment of the school which makes it impossible to handle a large amount of the athletics at one time. The schools throughout the country are beginning to see and to understand the important part that athletics plays in the school and have hired competent instructors to handle athletics alone. They have also supplied their schools with the best of equipment and have done all in their power to make their schools the best. It is our duty to see to it that we do not become rusty and old-fashioned, but that we keep up, yes, and in the lead of the other schools. The students rnust be made to realize how important it is for the students to take an active interest in athletics in their Freshman and Sophomore years, and it is necessary that the school be supplied with adequate athletic equipment to meet the needs of the school. i So let's all boost for bigger athletics and better equipment in our High School. bk Pk Pk bk ik ak Pk This year for the purpose of creating a greater interest in athletics and increas- ing the spirit and pep of the High School, class basketball was instituted. Mr. Keegan, who has always been interested in all High School affairs, presented the High School with a silver loving cup, to be given to the class winning the Basketball Tournament. This class was to keep it until the following year. It was lVIr. Keegan's wish that only good, honest rivalry and clean sportmanship would be shown in the contest, and that it would promote 'better and cleaner athletics in our school. ' It means a great deal to the school to have the business men of the community show such an interest in the school, and we greatly appreciate Mr. Keegan's interest, and his readiness to help us. THE HIGH SCHOOL LIBRARY Great Bend has always been justly proud of her High School for various reasons. There is, however, much room for improvement, in the equipment of the high school. One of the things most needed at present is a school library. So much inconvenience and extra work is caused by the lack of this. And then our principal and faculty advisor, lVlr. Grabske, did much to help us make our Rhorea what it is. We think it is needless to say how our coach has helped us. Without him athletics of all sorts could not have been and although he had to work under difficulties, the results of his efforts have made us proud of our boys. We have been helped greatly in many ways by each of them and what class with energy and pep could have failed under such able leadership? GIRLS IN TRAINING For several years we have had no physical training work whatsoever for the girls of the high school. Realizing the need of -such a class, one was instituted the first of this year. It is compulsory for the girls of the Freshman Class and open to all other classes. It is supervised by Miss Dougherty. The equipment is very poor and inadequate. It is hoped that by next year sufficient equip- ment, lockers and dressing rooms will be had so that more girls can take up the training. A teacher who can give all of her time to this work is needed. OSCAR SEAGLE ' Great Bend High School never does things on a small scale. The big things and the ones that are most worth while are the ones that appeal, not only to the high school student body, but to the community as a whole. For this reason the high school, under the auspices of the Lecture Course, brought to Great Bend on March 29th one of the most widely known singers in the country, Oscar Seagle. This man has studied for twelve years under jean de Reske. This has given him a mastery of French song. But it is in American music that his excellence has had its greatest. exercise. In one field, at least, he is unique as well as great for no other singer has ever given such interpretations of the negro spirituals and the popular songs of the south. As attractions of this sort are rare in this part of the country the concert was well attended. Oscar Seagle with his sincerity and human appeal won the hearts of the large crowd of people who heard him. OUR MIN ISTERS The student body of G. B. H. S. feels that some thanks is due to the various ministers of Great Bend for their wide awake interest in all of the high school activities during the past year. Regardless what it was, whether a football game or a thrift drive, the ministers were always on hand, willing to support us to the last minute. Their loyalty and co-operation will not soon be forgotten by us. Here's a boost to the boosting ministers who helped to boost us. BUSINESS NOTES The first thing that came before the Business Department was the price of good quality printing. After considering several contracts we found to our surprise that the price of printing and engraving had greatly advanced since I9I9. At first we were a little discouraged because a great amount of money was involved in the handling of this enterprise and we were to be directly responsible.
