Ex .flbnla l 7 THE STRAY LEAVES PCR IQLLI Published By The Senior Class of Grass Valley l-llgh School - Grass Valley, Calif. Dedication For their untiring efforts toward the betterment of sports in this High School and because of their having been Freshmen along with us, we, the annual staff of l94l, dedicate this annual to William Bill George and Arthur Art Hooper. William George ...--.. Zin emnriam DELBERT D. MANROSS Teacher in the Grass Valley High School V927-l94l Jldlminiatnatlon The theme of the l94l Stray Leaves is Patriotism, This is especially appropriate at this time, when our country is concentrating all energy on a total defense program. We have much to be thankful for in this country and sometimes our privileges are taken too much for granted, but we have examples in other parts of the world of what can happen here. We must all help in this national program, which calls for the active support of all loyal citizens, in order to protect our democratic form of government. Students and graduates can help by performing daily tasks efficiently and carrying their share of responsibility. ln this way we can demonstrate our patriotism and help promote national unity and provide for total defense. The girls started the year with volley ball, then went to basketball, baseball and tennis, And since variety is the spice of life the girls tried a little deck tennis, archery, tumbling, and relay racing on the side. On March 8, two girls' basketball teams traveled to Marysville to represent Grass Valley in a basketball playday. The A team was undefeated but tied once and the B team beaten once. Sponth The Juniors won the B division. It is easy to say that Charlotte Daley and Inez Cox, although the latter is only a Freshman, were the outstanding players, ln the Junior-Sophomore game Charlotte chalked up 38 points, this being something ot a record. Don't you think? The Seniors were captained by Viola Smith, the Juniors by Grace Fuller, the Saphomores by Carol George and the Freshmen by Inez Cox. The Seniors emerged victorious in the supremacy at Girls' Volleyball. The Senior girls worked hard and long to obtain this honors The team was captained by Viola Smith and she proved worthy of the honor presented to her. The most thrilling game or the schedule was between the Seniors and the Freshmen, The score when the final whistle blew being 39-38 in favor of the Seniors. The Junior team was captained by Babe Ostrarn, the Sophomore by Merle Ostrorn and the Freshmen by Wgnztred Veale As no one team was able to defeat everyone there was no Champ The Seniors, Juniors and Sophomores all being tied in number won or lost, The Seniors proving their superiority to all other teams, walked away with the championship in Girls' Basketball. The Seniors proved too much for the other teams beating the Juniors 20-9, Sophomores 34-27 and Freshmen 40-l2. By these scores you are able to see how the Seniors were able to win, The team was captained by Alta Cox The Juniors were captained by Babe Ostrom, the Sophomores by Jan Hagerty and the Freshmen by Norma Gallino, The Freshmen were the surprise team ct the year, They were able to hold the Juniors to a score ot l9-l5 which is very good considering the practice the Juniors have had compared to the Freshmen.
