Our congratulations are extended to all who have made some contribution to the success of this desirable enterprise. Amid continuous changes in many areas, the high quality of the Olympian remains the same from year to year. From our viewpoint as principal and vice-principal at Grantham we can see many changes oc- curring. As students you may not be quite as aware of them and perhaps this is a good opportunity to bring them to your attention. During the fall the staff conducted a serious examination of the past, present and future directions of Grantham. Special consideration was given to the signifi- cance of the Scholarship committee because these had both student and parent representatives. The conclusions will have an impact on the directions of our school for many years to come. Grantham High School will develop a curriculum which is as broadly based as facilities allow and the teaching methods will be diverse so that maximum student needs may be served. Above all scholarship will be emphasized but scholarship will not refer to marks as was the case in the past. Scholarship will be identified with the student who displays high motivation, creativity and superior comprehension, accompanied by a consistent attitude and achievement using logical thought. These characteristics can apply to any course in any phase at any year level. A second emphasis will be to develop an interdisciplinary curriculum and methodology. Some examples of this are present now in our new courses in Environment, Civics and Creative , Crafts. Finally but of no less importance will be the continued efforts to increase communications, contact and understanding among staff, students and parents. This may mean more adult students, expansion of the Grantham Activity nights to include parents and whatever else will assist. Increasingly you, as students, and your parents, will be asked for your opinions on what you would like the school to do and to be. It will be a slow but continuous process and ultimately the success will be the result of all of us working together. Wm. H. Wiley and C. R. Salter. Mrs. Eyman, Mrs. Hendry. Ingrid comes f rom a family of six where she is the eldest of two sisters and one brother. A few of her hobbies are listening to and collecting records, photography and tennis. Ingrid says that the coiirses here at Grantham are much the same as they are in Bolivia, but they seem harder because of the language problem. In Trinidad they have no choice of subjects. They are re- quired to take Anatomy, Art, Philosophy, Civics, Literature, Phys- ics and Chemistry the first term. The second term they take History, Geography, Math, Physical Education and English. Their classes start at eight a.m. and continue until twelve thirty where upon they break because of the heat until three o ' clock. Then they start back again until five o ' clock. Ingrid ' s reasons for coming to Canada were to understand the lan- guage better, and learn more about Canada itself and Canadians. She finds the people friendly, the weather unique and enjoys the nu- merous changes, such as the autumn leaves and the winter ' s snow. We hope you ' ve enjoyed your year at Grantham Ingrid and your stay in Canada. 14 ' ; r; ' j: ' Rfj ijiv ' ,;fta -.i¥ ' A i- A ' i ' v ' - ' Metamorphosis Help I ' m in trouble . . . valedictorians in most high schools to point out the futility of the academic years spent in high school, and their total irrelevance in relation to the years that follow, whether they be spent in centers of liigher learn- ing or elsewhere. The end result of this is that students are reminded of what they al- ready know, and their pessimism especially in the last year is unfortunately increased. In the midst of frustration and discontent something about the years invested in high school is forgotten, even tonight in the Graduation exercises. At Commencement we reap the fruits of our academic endeavours. Students are re- cognized as having successfully completed four or five of scholastic achievement. Those who excelled are given special tribute for their extra hard work or brains, what- ever be the case. But there is another kind of achievement that should equally be honoured tonight, and all graduates share in this honour. High school is not just symbolic of forgotten equations, solutions or translations. It is also representative of a time and place in our lives where we, the students, are given the opportunity in and out of the classroom, through peer and teacher association, to develop as a person. The awkward teenager that entered high school, leaves it as a young adult with at least the beginnings of ideas that are his own. The degree to which this is accomplished is debatable because it cannot be assessed quantitatively. Too often our society tends to encourage those things in life which can be measured like material and scholastic success. Students should be guided into the adult world with encouragement to succeed not only as students, but as persons. In the truly in- dividual, intellectual and character growth are inseparable. To be lacking in one or the other is to be that much further from total maturity. It would be a mistake to over emphasize the role education should play in develop- ing individuals. The school does not, catmot teach students how to achieve personal growth. The initiative must come from the student. The institution merely provides the means - that is why encouragement is so necessary. I am not demeaning scholastic achievement. What 1 am saying is that personal achievement is equally important to create a well-blanced individual who can live in a world with people. So this evening, every graduate sitting in this auditorium should be congratulated for making the grade academically and as a person. I feel I am expressing the views and sentiments of my fellow graduates when I say that life in high school would have been less tolerable had it not been for our relationships with each other, in times of agony and ecstasy . THIS is what we will remember most when the academic part of high school is long forgotten. In closing, I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank the staff and my fellow graduates for giving me this honour tonight, and for making my high school years something worth remembering. Thank you, Olivia Del Col. ' 71 Senior Football This year ' s senior gators were terribly underrated at the start of the 1973 football season. More than likely this was because the senior team had only four seniors returning from the previous year. Con- sequently the senior gators turned a lot of heads and proved themselves to be a strong team. They, were in first place in the C division until the last game of the season and ended up with a .666% win- ning average and second place. Unfortunately the seniors only losses came at the end of the season when it counted the most. Simcoe edged our gators 14-13 in the second last game and Secord shut them out 13-0 in the last game of the season for the C division championship. With our thirty play- ers returning to the senior ranks next year and with coaches like Bill (Duke) Hughes, Bill Utley, and Roy Fraser, next year will definitely be the year of the Gator. I ' ll bet you a draft on it. Craig Murchison, Mgr. ; Mike Anderson, Mike An- tonelli, PaulBiega, Pete Broccolo, Jim Docherty, Bob Featherstone, Brian Carriock. Jerry Jadwiszczak, Jeff John- son, Phil Jones, Blaine Kim- pinski , Don Kretz , Don Lounsbury , Ed Mrozek, Al- bert Nickel. Junior Football At the end of last season it was highly speculated throughout the peninsula that this year ' s junior team was going to be the powerhouse. Then the age change came along. Over half of these fine junior players were now forced to move up to the senior ranks. With less than ten veterans left on the junior team, their hopes were not dimmed. The junior gators went on to win their first game over Laura Secord by a safe margin. Unfortunately, and to the dismay of many, from here they fizzled out. They failed to win a game after their first impressive victory. Without a doubt this can be attributed to injuries and a lack of experience. The junior coaching staff of Tom Owens, Brian Lailey, Neil Smith, and Tim Slack are positive that next year ' s season will prove much more rewarding. As a matter of fact, it might be more aptly described as the rule, since at times politics would appear to be the chief target for some of the most overworked and intemperate forms of derision. And while it is unfortunate that, because of this, an ancient and honourable profession is often being ir- responsibly defamed, the most serious result of all is that so many of our young people are being discouraged from entering public life. Personally, I make no apologies for being involved in our country ' s political process; I have known and have been associated with far too many politicians of intelligence, integrity, and dedication not to take a large measure of pride in the opportunity that has been extended to me to serve my commiunity and my fellow -citizens in my present capacity. And knowing, too, the great potential for good that lies within our system, I feel I would be remiss if I did not strongly exhort our young people to seriously consider devoting themselves to some form of political involvement. You might have to withstand sonne gibes and jokes along the way, but the co-operation and the goodwill of the vast majority of your fellow- citizens, and the chance you will have to play a role in preserving and in building upon all that is decent and fair in our society will far outweigh any other considera- tions. Public office, is not as the nnan once said, the last refuge of scoundrels . It is fertile ground for idealists, and a field worthy of the noblest dreams and aspira- tions of our young men and women.
