Mr. Dean Nodine has been our district superintendent for 15 years. He was born at Sinai, South Dakota. He attended college at the University of Oregon, where he earned his masters degree. Mr. Nodine and his wife Joyce have three children, Jeff, Jodi, and Jeanie. 4 SUPERINTENDENT OUR PR1NC PAL-MR. PANS EH Mr. Charles Dannen has been our principal for nine years. Born and raised in Brownsville, Oregon, he joined the military in 1943. After that he went to college at 0. S. U. Mr. Dannen has two daughters; Heather, 22 and Hollie, 13. His hobbies include woodworking and outdoor activities. Charleyne Rutter has worked as our secretary for thirteen years. She was born and raised in Mount Vernon. Her job includes typing, bookkeeping, shorthand, and taking telephone calls. 5 LANGUAGE Mr. Gene Winnett has been at Grant Union for nine years. He lives here with his wife Cathy, and three children, Kevin 14, James 11, and Tiffany 9. Mr. Winnett teaches Mirrors of Man and Freshman English. He is Athletic Director, Assistant Football Coach, and Varsity Club Advisor. Gene enjoys golfing and hunting. The Freshman English class hard at work. The Freshman English class, except the boys in the front, continue on with their work. 6 DEPARTMENT Mrs. Dannen was born and raised in Portland. She has been teaching here for eleven years. Her classes this year are Creative Writing, Journalism, Speech Psychology, and Counseling. She enjoys bowling, reading, music, and traveling. RaMona Desjardin lettering for the Gold Digger. LANGUAGE Mr. Harry Neumann, our counselor, taught American Literature this year. Mr. Neumann has worked at Grant Union for two years. He was born and raised in Spencer Wisconsin and attended Wisconsin State University. He and his wife Linda have three children. His hobbies are skiing, baseball, hunting, fishing, soccer, and tennis . Cindee Walker thinking of better days. Group discussion over different authors. American Literature class discussing a new novel. 8 DEPARTMENT Mr. Dave Tolman has been teaching Annual Staff, German, Spanish, and English II for two years. Dave is assistant Football and Wrestling Coach and Head Track Coach for the boys. Mr. Tolman likes to fish and hunt. Greg Armstrong, Robert Camargo, and Lesley Warner prepare debate tactics. Spanish class enjoys their own cooking at their annual Mexican dinner. 9 ViOOdSHOP Mr. Larry Mathews was born in Pendelton, Oregon. He came here three years ago to teach Freshman Wood- shop, Industrial Math, Drafting, Construction, General Shop, and Girls Wood. Mr. Mathews coaches boy’s Junior Varsity Basketball, and girl’s and boy’s Varsity Golf. Alan Fisher and Brian Neumann having a great time. Industrial Math class. 10 AUTO SHOP Tom Moore playing cars. Carl Johnson, has taught auto and metal shop for 9 years. His classes have special assignments like the new foot- ball sleds. The metal items around school including flag poles, backstops, the G. U., and bike racks have been made by the welding and metal working classes. Leland Bliss fired up over welding. Terry Griffith all greased up. 11 NEW FACES IN Mrs. Wendy Wiggins, a graduate of Southern Oregon State College, has spent her first teaching year instructing band and choir here at Grant Union. She was born and raised in Klamath Falls. Mrs. Wiggins enjoys dancing, flute, singing, and bike riding. Honor Choir warming up. THE MUSIC DEPT. Concert Band. the band for the concert. Brian Cure helps jazz the music up. Mr. Timothy Nord, our new band teacher, born and raised in Portland, Oregon. He attended Portland State University. Mr. Nord teaches guitar, concert band, and stage band. His main interests are mountain climbing, hiking and backpacking. 13 DEPARTMENT OF Mr. Don Jones has been teaching Citizenship, and Clusters for twelve years. He is a graduate of University of Montana. Mr. Jones also spent time in the Army at Munich, Germany. He coaches football, and girls basketball. SOCIAL SCIENCES Mr. Mike McCoy is teaching Citizenship, Ameri- can History, Sociology, 2201, and Campaign 76. He has been teaching here two years. He and his wife Linda have three children, Michelle 7, Jeff 5, and Jason 2. Mr. McCoy enjoys all athletics and fishing. He is the Freshman Football coach and Head Wres- tling Coach. BUSINESS DEPARTMENT Sue Bonnett and Clav Crim taking timewritings. This is Miss Judy Bigelow’s second year working in thi Business Department at Grant Union. Miss Bigelow is teach ing Typing I, Bookkeeping and Office Practice this year She also coaches Freshman-Sophomore Volleyball anc serves as Pep Club advisor. Miss Bigelow giving helpful advice to Valerie Windham. 16 HOME EC. GETS NEW DEHEAD It’s always a busy day in Gourmet Foods. New in the Home Economics Department this year is Mrs. Susan Erickson. Susan’s hobbies include sewing, crocheting, macrame, embroidery, and racing in jeeps. Mrs. Erickson teaches Home Economics, Home Decorating, Gourmet Foods, Bachelor Living, and Fashion Modeling. Sandy Childress, Lisa Krayer, Cindy Cyrus, and Vicki Bagett display their creation. Cathy Duffy really gets into her work. 17 P £ DEPARTMENT Mr. and Mrs. Toste have taught at Grant Union for four and two years respectfully. Mr. Toste teaches P. E. and Health. Mrs. Toste teaches P. E. and Conditioning, she coached volley- ball and is an assistant basketball coach. For hobbies Mr. Toste likes to travel, play football and ride motor- cycles (when he gets one.) Mrs. Toste likes to sew, read, and disect things. The Tostes have two children; Angie 3, and Travis 1. Sandy Williams enjoys vaulting. Kevin Winnett learns to do a flip. Chuck and Carol Toste. 18 TINE ARTS DEPARTMENT Art class having a busy day. Mr. Don Roberts has been at Grant Union for four years. He is teaching Advanced Painting, Sculpturing- Drawing, Introductory Art, Modern Novel, Expository Writing, and Junior and Senior Play. Don lives with his wife Diana and daughter Ptolemy. Mr. Roberts was born and raised in Eastern Washington and Oklahoma. SCIENCE Mr. L. J. Baucum holds the record for being at Grant the longest. For twenty-two years he has taught Biology I and II, Conservation, and Agriculture. Mr. Baucum’s hobbies include athletics, fishing, and farming. Marty Holmstrom, )im Lattie, and Mark Seals’ interest varies between the photographer and disecting. Biology I class studying hard. 20 DEPARTMENT Robert McGuire “Mac” has been Grant Union’s Physical Science teacher for the past nine years. Besides teaching several science classes, Mr. McGuire also instructs Program Math and Surveying. Mac stated that Surveying was his most enjoyable class this year, but was hampered due to lack of funds and equipment, but several trips were scheduled to make up for the dilemma. Mr. McGuire is an avid bird hunter, along with enjoying fishing and camping. Physics students ponder (daydream) about the mysteries of the universe. 21 Mrs. Kuizenga has been teaching at Grant Union for 11 years. She graduated from Michigan State U. Classes she teaches include Algebra I and II, and Personal Finance. Some of her hobbies are swimming, fishing, and golf. Mrs. Kuizenga is also very active in community affairs. DEPARTMENT Geometry class corrects their homework. Mr. Ken Molnar has been a mathematics teacher at Grant Union for 8 years. He teaches Advanced Topics, Advanced Industrial Math, Basic Math, Geometry, Industrial Math, and Special Topics. He is head of the intra- mural program, and Ken is also sophomore class advisor. He and his wife Peggy, a Grant Union graduate in 1968, have two children, Matthew 3, and Melinda. Excitement is produced in Geometry. 23 HEAL TH-VRIVER 'S EVOCATION Mr. Henry Talus has been a teacher at Grant Union for 8 years. He teaches Driver Education, Health, Career English. Mark Moulton thinks hard .. . sometimes. 44 It is unfortunate when an accident takes a life of a person, especially when he is so young. John Lachlan McAuslan, a 17-year-old senior at Grant Union, was killed in a car accident March 25, 1977. John is survived by his parents, Gilbert McAuslan of Pendleton and Janet McAuslan of John Day; two brothers, Tom of Whidbey Island, Wn. and David of Pendleton. Driskill Memorial Chapel, John Day handled the arrange- ments. John had lived in John Day since he was about three years old and had attended Humbolt Elementary School, and John Day Grade before entering Grant Union. While at Grant Union John participated in many different things. He played freshman basketball and intramural. He worked in the cafeteria during his Junior year and was employed at the Union 76 Station until his death. John will be greatly missed by his classmates, teachers, and friends at Grant. He was a person who never put anyone down and always had a smile on his face. The Grant Union Varsity Football team had a very good season this year, winning eight and losing one, a squeaker, to defending state champion Vale. Student Council was slow getting started for the 1976-77 school year. The first meeting was called in October to discuss plans for Spirit Week and Homecoming. Throughout the year we obtained a juke box for the cafeteria. It was well approved by the student body. The Council planned a Winter Formal for the first time in Grant Union’s history. The dance was a success and it is planned to become an annual event. They raised the grade point average from 3.00 to 3.25 to receive honor chords at Graduation. Many other topics were discussed and overall the Stu- dent Council was very successful this year.
