However, ineligibilities soon cut into the team's strength. This factor kept the J.V.'s from equal- ing their opening game promise. The outstand- ing defensive play of Glenn Richardson and the offensive performances of Jesus Feieran and Dave Oleson offer much hope for next year's varsity. fwmggwm .3 il as 1 E The common conception of a football star is a person big enough to tangle with rhinoceros and come out alive. However, little 5'7 , 150 pound Chester Phillips is a true star in his own right. For the second year in succession, Chet earned all-league recognition, making the first de- fensive team at guard this season. Even more important though, this quiet, hard working boy has earned the admiration of not only his fellow students, but that of the men who have coached him. The following comments are iust a sample of how the coaching staff feels about Chester. Coach Otterson- Chester is probably the best proof that l've even seen that you don't have to have size to succeed in football. A sincere boy with a real desire to achieve-never satisfied with being second best, is Coach Hauser's sum- mation of Chet. Coach Davis agrees wholeheartedly saying, Chester gives l0O0L all the time. lf all Granite Hills players made as good use of their abilities as Chet, our teams would be unbeatable. However, Chester didn't come by his talent naturally. . ii W. -.fQ,.....,., , , ...,.., Q imiiiijflffifiigiixii, '1aQ,f2ii3Nffgliyf., , V? ' r fl 5- V R ITY OOT B LL He began his career as a monstrous 100 lb. lineman on the frosh football team. The next year he advanced to the iunior varsity where his most, outstanding accomplishment was the biggest broken nose imaginable. Though hard w'ork, Chester showed tremendous improvement in his iunior year, and made honorable mention on the all- Metropolitan League team. This unsung hero really came into his own this year, being voted .co-captain and most valuable player by his teammates in addition to his all- league honors. Besides the abilities that he so ably displayed on the field, Chester has an intangible quality of leadership that can't be measured. This quality, along with a fine sense of humor as shown when he accepted a blue garter lfor good Iuckl from the homecoming queen without even blushing made Chet one of the best liked boys on the squad. ln summing up why Chester is so outstanding, Coach Otterson hits the nail right on the head when he says, Chester is more willing to pay the price than the price than any athlete l've known. It's this willingness to com- pletely extend himself that makes him a standout.

Tim Schraeder, Al- bert Dennis and Larry Johnston put forth fine individual performances that highlighted the Eaglet season.
